repairing connections between statues and the body of constantine's arch
This paper presents and illustrates recent local restoration of Dacians in the upper part of the Constantine’s Arch in Rome. The eight statues standing on entablature of columns sixteen meters above ground level are fastened to the main body of the arch by round iron bars driven inside the statue and the arch wall section.
During summer 2013 observation from a telescopic truck crane re-vealed deterioration of connections which appeared rusted and broken.
The paper deals with methodology of interventions as well as numeri-cal analysis carried out to establish efficiency of connectors against earthquakes. Results obtained by simple rigid body behaviour and by finite element analysis are presented and discussed
An optimisation algorithmfor the collapse detection of stone masonry structures
The paper presents a computer procedure to evaluate the collapse load and the collapse mechanism of three-dimensional structures made of rigid blocks with no-tension and frictional interfaces based on mathematical programming. Using the theorems of non-standard limit analysis, the algorithm searches the minimum statically admissible load factor, which ensures a possible mechanism. The presence of friction makes the problem non-linear and difficult to solve. The possibility to detect the optimal solution using a quasi-feasible initial estimate of the unknowns is shown. This is obtained as the solution of a linear programming problem corresponding to a system of blocks with dilatancy in the joints instead of friction. Various analyses show the validity of the procedure and the effectiveness of the non-standard limit analysis approach for studying the collapse behaviour of real stone masonry structures
Evolutionary Scenarios for Italian Travel Agencies
The present work aims at analyzing whether and how Italian travel agents perceive the need of adapting their role and activities because of recent technological changes. Because of the increasing diffusion of ICTs, distribution and intermediation of tourism services and products are going through a deep restructuring. Travel agencies are currently suffering due to increased (online and offline) competition and ever more demanding customers. In order to improve our understanding of these influencing factors, and on the way they will shape tourism, we first looked at possible descriptions of future scenarios for the sector, then we moved on to interviewing key experts and professionals to understand their perception on the present and future situation. We finally compared literature models with operators' perception to detect any eventual gap and highlight relevant causes and solutions
An optimization algorithm for the collapse detection of block structures with no-tensional and frictional constraints
Mathematical programming for the limit analysis of block masonry structures in the presence of finite frictio
Domenico Castelli’s designs are analysed which illustrated two fountains in the Quirinale gardens, one has disappeared, the other still exists but has been significantly modified. The two works were incorporated into a more general discussion on architecture between the end of the XVIth and the first half of the XVIIth Centuries
3D limit analysis of roman groin vaults
In Roman Baths (e.g. the Baths of Diocletian in Rome) the Romans employed groin vaults of great dimension. The maximum span is more than 20 m. The central body of the structure is made of a series of seven aisles with semicircular barrel vaults intersecting three aisles; outer groin vaults of minor dimensions provide counteraction of thrust of central vaults. In the aim of structural conservation of ancient wide span vaulted halls, simple tools of analysis are still lacking, despite the many sophisticated computational methods now available; due to geometrical and material complexity the theme is not commonly faced in technical literature. In this paper, we study the collapse behavior of cross vaults, damaged or undamaged, under horizontal static action. In the present modelling, masonry is discretized as a system of interacting rigid blocks in no-tension and frictional contact. The computational code used consists of an optimization algorithm which, based on the theorems of non-standard Limit Analysis (in the presence of non-associative rules), searches for the minimum statically admissible load factor ensuring a kinematically admissible collapse mechanism. Although the presence of friction makes the problem non-convex, non-linear and deprived of the uniqueness of solution, the possibility to detect a ‘safe’ optimal solution is guaranteed by a quasifeasible initial estimate of the unknowns, corresponding to the solution of a system with dilatancy instead of friction (Linear Programming—LP). To simplify the study, only LP approach is here used. The main difficult consists in a suitable description of the 3D geometry and of the proper geometry of the joints, varying from a joint to the other. The effectiveness of the proposed approach is shown through several examples
Domenico Castelli architetto
The work rebuilds the figure of the architect Domenico Castelli, who was active in Rome during the time of Pope Urban VIII (1623-1644), by using dating of his activity and a catalogue of his works. The work is completed by a study of the Santuario of Cibona in Allumiere, Lazio
The body of designs by Domenico Castelli (code Barb. lat. 4409), is a testimony to the construction and architectural policy of Pope Urban VIII. It is analysed in its structure with the aim of placing it within Castelli’s activities
