The Nomad of the Naked Body: The Trans-corporeal Ecopoetics of Sunwoo Kim
The material turn in the environmental humanities drastically changes our perception of who we are and challenges our attitude toward nature. In this article, the author argues that there is a critical connection between the works of Sunwoo Kim, one of the most prominent ecofeminist poets of Korea, and the trans-corporeal poetics of new materialist feminism. By resuscitating “dead” nature and recognizing the agency of things in the world, Sunwoo Kim deconstructs humanity’s prestigious position of all-powerful subjects and repositions them as equal actors with other nonhuman beings. Trans-corporeal poetics allows her to combine the two most conspicuous trends of her poetry: her feminist poetics and her ecological poetics. Owing to her new recognition of our essential corporeality, Kim rescues the female body from the patriarchal society’s debasement and brings it back to its original status. The meaning of her trans-corporeal body is most apparent in her poems on eating, since eating shares matter across corporeal boundaries. Because foodways are a major contributor toward climate change, Kim’s articulation of the trans-corporeal nature of food and her insistence on the mindful eating deserves our full attention, if we are to halt our mad rush into ecological disaster
Classification of Edge-dependent Labels of Nodes in Hypergraphs
A hypergraph is a data structure composed of nodes and hyperedges, where each hyperedge is an any-sized subset of nodes. Due to the flexibility in hyperedge size, hypergraphs represent group interactions (e.g., co-authorship by more than two authors) more naturally and accurately than ordinary graphs. Interestingly, many real-world systems modeled as hypergraphs contain edge-dependent node labels, i.e., node labels that vary depending on hyperedges. For example, on co-authorship datasets, the same author (i.e., a node) can be the primary author in a paper (i.e., a hyperedge) but the corresponding author in another paper (i.e., another hyperedge). In this work, we introduce a classification of edge-dependent node labels as a new problem. This problem can be used as a benchmark task for hypergraph neural networks, which recently have attracted great attention, and also the usefulness of edge-dependent node labels has been verified in various applications. To tackle this problem, we propose WHATsNet, a novel hypergraph neural network that represents the same node differently depending on the hyperedges it participates in by reflecting its varying importance in the hyperedges. To this end, WHATsNet models the relations between nodes within each hyperedge, using their relative centrality as positional encodings. In our experiments, we demonstrate that WHATsNet significantly and consistently outperforms ten competitors on six real-world hypergraphs, and we also show successful applications of WHATsNet to (a) ranking aggregation, (b) node clustering, and (c) product return prediction
Alternator Torque Model Based on Equivalent Circuit of Synchronous Generator for Electric Power Management
This paper presents an alternator model suitable for electric power management research. The proposed model estimates the alternator driving torque under various driving conditions, such as engine speed, output current, and generation voltage. The base equations of the proposed model are derived from the equivalent circuit and the phasor diagram of the field-wound-type synchronous generator. Model parameters that affect power conversion efficiency were defined and identified through open and short load tests on a bench. Validation tests were also performed to evaluate model accuracy under several representative driving conditions. Differentiation of Deep Subcortical Infarction Using High-Resolution Vessel Wall MR Imaging of Middle Cerebral Artery
Objective: To evaluate the utility of high-resolution vessel wall imaging (HR-VWI) of middle cerebral artery (MCA), and to compare HR-VWI findings between striatocapsular infarction (SC-I) and lenticulostriate infarction (LS-I). Materials and Methods: This retrospective study was approved by the Institutional Review Board, and informed consent was waived. From July 2009 to February 2012, 145 consecutive patients with deep subcortical infarctions (SC-I, n = 81; LS-I, n = 64) who underwent HR-VWI were included in this study. The degree of MCA stenosis and the characteristics of MCA plaque (presence, eccentricity, location, extent, T2-high signal intensity [T2-HSI], and plaque enhancement) were analyzed, and compared between SC-I and LS-I, using Fisher's exact test. Results: Stenosis was more severe in SC-I than in LS-I (p = 0.040). MCA plaque was more frequent in SC-I than in LS-I (p = 0.028), having larger plaque extent (p = 0.001), more T2-HSI (p = 0.001), and more plaque enhancement (p = 0.002). The eccentricity and location of the plaque showed no significant difference between the two groups. Conclusion: Both SC-I and LS-I have similar HR-VWI findings of the MCA plaque, but SC-I had more frequent, larger plaques with greater T2-HSI and enhancement. This suggests that HR-VWI may have a promising role in assisting the differentiation of underlying pathophysiological mechanism between SC-I and LS-I.Y
Chronic and acute stress monitoring by electrophysiological signals from adrenal gland
We present electrophysiological (EP) signals correlated with cellular cell activities in the adrenal cortex and medulla using an adrenal gland implantable flexible EP probe. With such a probe, we could observe the EP signals from the adrenal cortex and medulla in response to various stress stimuli, such as enhanced hormone activity with adrenocorticotropic hormone, a biomarker for chronic stress response, and an actual stress environment, like a forced swimming test. This technique could be useful to continuously monitor the elevation of cortisol level, a useful indicator of chronic stress that potentially causes various diseases
Feasibility of Permanent Stenting with Solitaire FR as a Rescue Treatment for the Reperfusion of Acute Intracranial Artery Occlusion
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: The Solitaire FR can be used not only as a tool for mechanical thrombectomy but also as a detachable permanent stent. Our aim was to assess the feasibility and safety of permanent stent placement with the Solitaire FR compared with other self-expanding stents for intracranial artery recanalization for acute ischemic stroke. MATERIALS AND METHODS: From January 2011 through January 2016, we retrospectively selected 2979 patients with acute ischemic stroke. Among them, 27 patients who underwent permanent stent placement (13 patients with the Solitaire FR [Solitaire group] and 14 patients with other self-expanding stents [other stent group]) were enrolled. The postprocedural modified TICI grade and angiographic and clinical outcomes were assessed. The safety and efficacy of permanent stent placement of the Solitaire FR for acute large-artery occlusion were evaluated. RESULTS: Stent placement was successful in all cases. Modified TICI 2b-3 reperfusion was noted in 84.6% of the Solitaire group and in 78.6% of the other stent group. Procedural time was significantly shorter in the Solitaire group than in the other stent group (P = .022). Shorter procedural time was correlated with favorable outcome (rho = 0.46, P = .035). No significant differences were found in the modified TICI grade, NIHSS score, mRS, and hemorrhagic transformation rate between the 2 groups. The acute in-stent thrombosis rate at discharge was significantly lower when a glycoprotein IIb/IIIa inhibitor was injected during the procedure (P = .013). CONCLUSIONS: Permanent stent placement with the Solitaire FR compared with other self-expanding stents appears to be feasible and safe as a rescue tool for refractory intra-arterial therapy.N
Dichotomizing Level of Pial Collaterals on Multiphase CT Angiography for Endovascular Treatment in Acute Ischemic Stroke: Should It Be Refined for 6-Hour Time Window?
Purpose: Although endovascular treatment is currently thought to only be suitable for patients who have pial arterial filling scores >3 as determined by multiphase computed tomography angiography (mpCTA), a cut-off score of 3 was determined by a study, including patients within 12 hours after symptom onset. We aimed to investigate whether a cut-off score of 3 for endovascular treatment within 6 hours of symptom onset is an appropriate predictor of good functional outcome at 3 months.
Materials and Methods: From April 2015 to January 2016, acute ischemic stroke patients treated with mechanical thrombectomy within 6 hours of symptom onset were enrolled into this study. Pial arterial filling scores were semi-quantitatively assessed using mpCTA, and clinical and radiological parameters were compared between patients with favorable and unfavorable outcomes. Multivariate logistic regression analysis was then performed to investigate the independent association between clinical outcome and pial collateral score, with the predictive power of the latter assessed using C-statistics.
Results: Of the 38 patients enrolled, 20 (52.6%) had a favorable outcome and 18 had an unfavorable outcome, with the latter group showing a lower mean pial arterial filling score (3.6±0.8 vs. 2.4±1.2, P=0.002). After adjusting for variables with a P-value of <0.1 in univariate analysis (i.e., age and National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale score at admission), pial arterial filling scores higher than a cut-off of 2 were found to be independently associated with favorable clinical outcomes (P=0.012). C-statistic analysis confirmed that our model had the highest prediction power when pial arterial filling scores were dichotomized at >2 vs. ≤2.
Conclusion: A pial arterial filling cut-off score of 2 as determined by mpCTA appears to be more suitable for predicting clinical outcomes following endovascular treatment within 6 hours of symptom onset than the cut-off of 3 that had been previously suggested.N
Soft conductive nanocomposites for recording biosignals on skin
Soft conductive nanocomposites have introduced significant breakthroughs in bio-integrated electronics by mitigating the mechanical mismatch between the body and the device. Compared with conventional wearable sensors based on rigid electronic materials, the wearable sensors based on soft nanocomposites are advantageous to long-term and high-quality biosignal recordings. Materials used for the synthesis of the nanocomposites, especially nanofillers, are critical for determining the quality of recorded biosignals and the performance of the nanocomposites. In this review, we focus on recent advances in soft conductive nanocomposites, mainly on their electrical and mechanical properties according to the types of nanofillers, and present their applications to wearable biosignal recording devices. We have classified the nanofillers into four categories: carbon-based nanomaterials, conducting polymers, metal-based nanomaterials, and liquid metals. We then introduce the applications of nanocomposites as wearable sensors that record various biosignals, including electrophysiological, strain, pressure, and biochemical information. In conclusion, a brief outlook on the remaining challenges for future nanomaterial-based bioelectronics is provided. © The Author(s) 2023.11Yscopu
