Towards ferrous medium-entropy alloys with low-cost and high-performance

    No full text
This article introduces a practical and straightforward strategy to take a paradigm shift in the high-entropy alloys (HEAs) and medium-entropy alloys (MEAs) design concept from equiatomic alloys towards cost-effective ferrous medium-entropy alloys (FeMEAs). Upon deviating from the equiatomic composition in Fe-containing alloy system, we show that various FeMEAs can be developed by pseudo-binary methods. Further, we discuss an overview of the microstructural evolution and mechanical properties of recently-developed FeMEAs, which exhibit a broad spectrum of microstructures and mechanical properties. This viewpoint article highlights insights into the concept of FeMEAs, providing a potential direction for future development of HEAs and MEAs. (C) 2020 Acta Materialia Inc. Preparation and optical characterization of mesoporous silica films with different pore sizes

    No full text
Mesoporous silica films with three different pore sizes were prepared by using cationic surfactant, non-ionic surfactant, or triblock copolymer as structure directing agents with tetramethylorthosilicate as silica source in order to control the pore size and wall thickness. They were synthesized by an evaporation-induced self-assembly process and spin-coated on Si wafer. Mesoporous silica films with three different pore sizes of 2.9, 4.6, and 6.6 nm and wall thickness ranging from similar to 1 to similar to 3 nm were prepared by using three different surfactants. These materials were optically transparent mesoporous silica films and crack free when thickness was less than 1 mu m. The photoluminescence spectra found in the visible range were peaked at higher energy for smaller pore and thinner wall sized materials, consistent with the quantum confinement effect within the nano-sized walls of the silica pores.J. THE EMOTIONAL QUALITY OF MUSICAL SOUND INTERFACE TO UNDERSTAND CONTEXTS

    No full text
Musical sound interfaces diverse in their tonality and pitch were employed to investigate the influence of emotions on contextual interpretation; two empirical studies using smartphone platform were conducted. The measured appropriateness of the interfaces for several purposes revealed the influence of emotions on the perception of context, with significant relation between the interfaces’ emotional qualities, which were rated in terms of pleasure and arousal, and perceived context represented by appropriateness. In addition, the contextual attributes of the interfaces measured by verbal estimation were shown to be correlated with the sounds’ pleasure and arousal. Throughout the studies the effect of emotional qualities on musical interfaces contextual attributes were verified, meanwhile the implementation of findings required further explorations

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    Get PDF
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

Formation and thermal-induced changes of mesostructures in fluorinated organosilicate films

    No full text
Mesoporous fluorinated organosilicate films were synthesized from tetramethoxysilane and perfluoroalkylsilanes (RO)(3)Si-R' under acidic conditions in the presence of cationic surfactant or triblock copolymer by sol-gel spin-coating. The mesoporous fluorinated organosilicate films made from perfluoroalkylsilanes (PFASs) with long perfluoroalkyl chains, which acted as a template, displayed a hexagonal mesostructure with very low concentration of surfactants, regardless of the kind of surfactants. Although most of the surfactants and organic moieties were decomposed above 550 degrees C, the mesostructure of mesoporous fluorinated organosilicate films was maintained up to 650 degrees C. After calcination at 550 degrees C, their composition was similar to that of mesoporous silica films, and the cylindrical mesostructure was changed to less ordered and broken mesostructure when PFASs with long perfluoroalkyl chains were used. However, the cylindrical mesostructure was maintained when PFASs with short perfluoroalkyl chains were used. Therefore, PFASs with long perfluoroalkyl chains acted as a structure directing agent, and the chain length of PFASs affected the formation of mesostructure and thermal-induced mesostructural change. Also, the increase of calcination temperature caused the change of the composition, mesostructure, and optical property in the mesoporous fluorinated organosilicate films. (C) 2006 Elsevier Inc. Superior strain-hardening by deformation-induced nano-HCP martensite in Fe-Mn-Si-C high-manganese steel

    No full text
We propose that high strain-hardening in face-centered cubic (FCC) crystals containing interstitial atoms could be achieved through the formation of nanoscale hexagonal close-packed (HCP) martensite with severe lattice distortions. Our experimental results showed that carbon atoms could more effectively prevent the HCP martensite from thickening and result in the formation of nano-HCP martensite. This caused a higher strainhardening rate in FeMnSiC steel with heavy carbon than in FeMnSiCrNi steel with trace carbon though the HCP martensite transformation kinetics was almost the same in these two steels.11Nsciescopu

    Variations on the Author

    Get PDF
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

    Get PDF
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis
