Public Signaling in Bayesian Ad Auctions
We study signaling in Bayesian ad auctions, in which bidders' valuations depend on a random, unknown state of nature. The auction mechanism has complete knowledge of the actual state of nature, and it can send signals to bidders so as to disclose information about the state and increase revenue. For instance, a state may collectively encode some features of the user that are known to the mechanism only, since the latter has access to data sources unaccessible to the bidders. We study the problem of computing how the mechanism should send signals to bidders in order to maximize revenue. While this problem has already been addressed in the easier setting of second-price auctions, to the best of our knowledge, our work is the first to explore ad auctions with more than one slot. In this paper, we focus on public signaling and VCG mechanisms, under which bidders truthfully report their valuations. We start with a negative result, showing that, in general, the problem does not admit a PTAS unless P = NP, even when bidders' valuations are known to the mechanism. The rest of the paper is devoted to settings in which such negative result can be circumvented. First, we prove that, with known valuations, the problem can indeed be solved in polynomial time when either the number of states d or the number of slots m is fixed. Moreover, in the same setting, we provide an FPTAS for the case in which bidders are single minded, but d and m can be arbitrary. Then, we switch to the random valuations setting, in which these are randomly drawn according to some probability distribution. In this case, we show that the problem admits an FPTAS, a PTAS, and a QPTAS, when, respectively, d is fixed, m is fixed, and bidders' valuations are bounded away from zero

Nematic Director Configuration, Local Order and Microviscosity in a PSLC Cell
The director configuration, the local order and the molecular-level reorientational dynamics (microviscosity) of the 5CB liquid crystal (LC) inside a polymer-stabilized LC (PSLC) cell prepared with the 4,4-bis(6-(acryloyloxy)hexyloxy)biphenyl (BAB6) diacrylic monomer have been studied with the EPR spin probe technique across the nematic and the isotropic phase of the LC. The cells made from glass slides, either clean or coated with an aligning layer, were filled with pure 5CB or with 0.5, 1.0 or 2.0 wt% of BAB6, either in the monomeric state or polymerized. Local orientational order parameter () in the non treated cells was always slightly lower than in the coated ones and both were lower than in the bulk LC. Order appeared to be independent of polymerization state or BAB6 concentration up to 1.0 wt%. Reorientational dynamics was essentially bulk-like in all cases, indicating that in our PSLC cells a full molecular mobility is retained. At the concentration of 2.0 wt%, in the coated cell with polymerized BAB6, the monodomain did not reform after a 90 • rotation of the cell in the magnetic field, suggesting that the polymer network is, as expected, stabilizing the preexisting director configuration

Abstract
SiC/SiC ceramic matrix composites (SiCf/SiC CMCs) are regarded as the new materials for the hot-section components of aircraft gas turbine engines, since they have one-third of the density of metallic superalloys, a higher temperature capability, good mechanical strength, and excellent thermal shock resistance. However, high-temperature water-vapor-rich combustion gases can induce severe surface recession phenomena in SiC/SiC leading to component failure. For this reason, it is necessary to design protective coatings, i.e., environmental barrier coatings (EBCs), able to protect the SiC/SiC surface in combustion environments. In the present work, ytterbium monosilicate (Yb2SiO5), stable when exposed to water vapor at high temperatures, and ytterbium disilicate (Yb2Si2O7), characterized by a thermal expansion coefficient closer to that of the substrate, were selected for a multilayer EBC system. EBCs were processed using the atmospheric plasma spray (APS) technique. A set of deposition parameters were tested, varying the power of the torch, and the composition and microstructure of the deposited coatings were studied in terms of porosity, crack density, and post-deposition phase retention by performing SEM, EDS, and XRD analysis. The results allow for the definition of the influence of deposition parameters on the final properties of multilayer EBC coatings

BDC-Decomposition for global influence analysis
In biochemical networks, the steady-state input-output influence is the sign of the output steady-state variation due to a persistent positive input perturbation; if the sign does not depend on the value of the strictly positive system parameters, the influence is structural. As recently shown for small perturbations, when the linearized system approximation is valid, steady-state input-output influences can be structurally assessed, for biochemical networks with m unknown parameters, by means of a vertex algorithm with complexity 2m. This letter shows that the structural input-output influence of a biochemical network is a global property, which does not require any small-perturbation assumption. It also shows that, using a new algorithm, the complexity can be reduced down to 2m-n , where n is the system order, thus drastically reducing the computation time. Finally, when the uncertain parameters belong to known intervals, non-conservative bounds are given for the steady-state ratio between output and input, allowing for sensitivity analysis.Accepted Author ManuscriptTeam Tamas Keviczk
