Attività di SIBioC - Medicina di Laboratorio e soddisfazione dei soci: Risultati di un questionario
This report presents the results of a survey performed on Oct-Nov 2015 on SIBioC member satisfaction. The survey addressed event attendance/received value, networking opportunities and overall benefit of SIBioC membership. An on-line questionnaire was sent to all SIBioC members through the web-based SurveyMonkey platform and the resulting database was statistically analyzed. The respondents (514 out of 2000 members) can be considered a representative sample of the associates, since different professional branches were represented proportionally. The large majority of respondents were familiar with SIBioC Newsletter and expressed a positive opinion on it. 71% of the respondents declared to access the official website from 1 to 5 times per month. Finally, 50,8% of respondents declared that they were aware of the existence of Lab Tests Online (LTO) website, with the majority of them (78.2%) being satisfied with it. Overall, the survey data showed a good level of satisfaction with SIBioC educational offer. The only aspect not completely positive was the limited knowledge of LTO, despite the large investment made on it by the society. Regarding the current scenario of reorganization of the laboratory network, many respondents addressed specific requests related to both enhancing the ad hoc education and improving the dialogue with institutions and other scientific societies. In these two fields, SIBioC is currently putting large efforts. Overall, the survey gave a positive feed-back stimulating the SIBioC management to further ameliorate the service to members, with the aim of contributing in continuously improving the quality of laboratory services and then the patient care
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis
TT Virus infection in the elderly
An epidemiological survey was carried out in an old people’s
nursing home. The aims of the present study were therefore: i) to
evaluate the prevalence of TTV infection in a sample of institutionalized
elderly subjects; ii) to correlate TTV prevalence with
HBV and HCV seroprevalence; iii) to correlate TTV prevalence
with any underlying diseases and conditions. The overall sample
included 285 subjects with a mean age of 83.4 ± 9.1 years (range
65-100 years). Twenty-six subjects (9.5%) were found TTV-DNA
positive. The highest rate of TTV positivity was found in the 85-89
year-old age bracket (10.9%), though no correlation was found
with advancing age (p = 0.764) or with the length of institutionalization
(p = 0.217). Coinfection was found with HBsAg in one
subject and with HCV in two. The rate of HCV infection was
11.6%. Multivariate analysis showed that diabetes (p = 0.03) and
self-sufficiency (p < 0.001) were independent factors associated
with TTV. None of the subjects had altered liver function tests or
evidence of liver disease. TTV infection is unassociated with any
evidence of liver damage, and its pathogenic role is questionable

Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts
We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued
use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more
sophisticated methods
Morphological features and kinetics of prymary cultures of BPH tissue supported by TV1 medium.
222 human prostatic biopsies were used to prepare cell cultures by means of a medium--colony formation permissive--containing fetal calf serum, called TV1. After 7, 14 and 21 days, the cultures were examined by optical and scanning electron microscopy. TV1 medium induces the formation and growth of two types of colonies, one mainly composed of epithelioid cells and distinguished by early growth; the second one made up exclusively of fibroblastoid cells which appear later in the culture. Epithelioid colonies, comprising three different cell types, appear to be arranged as a growth halo concentric to the bioptic fragment with a large central area, formed by a monolayer, and a pluristratified edge. Fibroblastoid cells weakly adhere to the substrate and form "satellite growth halos" separated from the primitive bioptic fragment. All the epithelioid cells were positive to cytokeratin LP34 Mab and negative to anti-smooth muscle-actin and anti-proline-4-hydroxylase antibodies. Fibroblastoid cells were only anti-proline-4-hydroxylase positive. The cell kinetics of epithelioid cells were also studied, revealing an extension of the S phase, in contrast to what happened with WAJC 404, and consequently a reduction of the percentage of cells entering mitosis. For this reason, the addition of fetal serum to the culture medium does not allow the use of prostate primary cultures for more than 14 days
