Nel 1986 l’Istituto universitario di architettura di Venezia organizza un ciclo di seminari dedicati alla didattica del design in cui si confrontano i rappresentanti dei percorsi di formazione delle principali istituzioni pubbliche e private italiane. L’esito dell’incontro non sarà per lo Iuav quello di inserire l’insegnamento del design nella facoltà di Architettura ma di avviare le vicende che porteranno a inaugurare il 30 gennaio 1995 un Corso di Diploma universitario in disegno industriale. Inizialmente quindi lo Iuav attribuisce al design un’autonomia “limitata” e confinata lontano dalla città lagunare. Riconoscendo però l’inevitabilità di specializzare la professione dell’architetto inizia così a sperimentare quanto sarà attuato nel 2000: la costituzione, accanto alla “storica” Architettura, delle facoltà di Pianificazione territoriale e, appunto, di Design e arti. I maggiori artefici dell’esperienza trevigiana sono il Rettore Marino Folin e Nicola Sinopoli, professore di Tecnologia dell’architettura a partire proprio dal convegno del 1986.
In 1986 the Istituto Universitario di Architettura di Venezia organized a cycle of seminars dedicated to design teaching that brought together the representatives of educational programmes from the major public and private institutions in Italy. The outcome of the meeting for Iuav was not the introduction of a design curriculum within the Architecture department, but the beginning of a process that on January 30th, 1995 led to the inauguration of a university- level Diploma Course in Industrial Design. Initially Iuav gave design “limited” autonomy, exiled far from the city of Venice itself. However upon recognizing the inevitability of specializing the architectural profession, it began to experiment with the goal that would be achieved in the year 2000: the constitution, alongside the “traditional” Department of Architecture, of the Department of Regional Planning, Design and Arts. The prime movers behind the experience in Treviso were the Rector Marino Folin and Nicola Sinopoli, professor of Technology for Architecture to start of the conference in 1986
