Web-based sensor streaming wearable for respiratory monitoring applications.
Get PDFThis paper presents a system for remote monitoring of respiration of individuals that can detect respiration rate, mode of breathing and identify coughing events. It comprises a series of polymer fabric-sensors incorporated into a sports vest, a wearable data acquisition platform and a novel rich internet application (RIA) which together enable remote real-time monitoring of untethered wearable systems for respiratory rehabilitation. This system will, for the first time, allow therapists to monitor and guide the respiratory efforts of patients in real-time through a web browser. Changes in abdomen expansion and contraction associated with respiration are detected by the fabric sensors and transmitted wirelessly via a Bluetooth-based solution to a standard computer. The respiratory signals are visualized locally through the RIA and subsequently published to a sensor streaming cloud-based server. A web-based signal streaming protocol makes the signals available as real-time streams to authorized subscribers over standard browsers. We demonstrate real-time streaming of a six-sensor shirt rendered remotely at 40 samples/s per sensor with perceptually acceptable latency (<0.5s) over realistic

No full textThe Institute of Medicine report, The Future of Nursing: Leading Change, Advancing Health, recommended increasing the proportion of nurses with baccalaureate degrees increase from its existing 50% to 80% by the year 2020 (Carissimk & Burger, 2017; Institute of Medicine, 2010). By 2017, an estimated maximum of 60% of more than 2.9 million registered nurses in the U.S. workforce (United States Department of Labor, 2018) had a bachelor’s degree. The progression of 10%, since the recommendation was generated in 2010 (Institute of Medicine, 2010), suggests that more aggressive measures may be necessary to reach this nationally established goal. In hospital-level studies, higher ratios of BSN educated nurses were associated with improved patient outcomes (Yakusheva, Lindrooth, & Weiss, 2014); enhanced assessment and critical thinking skills; and elevated communication abilities resulting in a better patient advocate (Anabari, 2015). A viable method to increase the volume of BSN graduates is to implement and promote strategies in applicable environments that promote academic progression. Evidence suggests that the intervention of efforts including academic advisement, marketing and promotion, the facilitation of associate degree in nursing (ADN) to bachelor of science in nursing (BSN) transitional partnerships, and student education regarding the benefits of early BSN pursuit create an environment where academic progression is simplified and streamlined (Knowlton & Angel, 2017). The interventions support an urban community college’s advancement toward meeting statewide workforce initiatives while addressing nationally recognized recommendations made for the nursing profession. Specific strategies named are designed to bridge the gap between ADN and BSN nursing education by imposing a sustainable approach to promoting dual BSN enrollment among ADN students. Ultimately, adopted efforts may also facilitate pathways toward improved patient outcomes in varying settings where ADN graduates may pursue employment
Implementing a Writing Course in an Oline Rn-BSN Program
Get PDFabstract: Scholarly writing is an essential skill for nurses to communicate new research and evidence. Written communication directly relates to patient safety and quality of care. However, few online RN-BSN programs integrate writing instruction into their curricula. Nurses traditionally learn how to write from instructor feedback and often not until midway into their baccalaureate education. Innovative strategies are needed to help nurses apply critical thinking skills to writing. The authors discuss a collaborative project between nursing faculty and technical communication faculty to develop and implement a writing course that is 1 of the 1st courses the students take in the online RN-BSN program

The RN to BSN Transition
No full textApproximately 60% of registered nurses (RNs) still enter practice with an associate’s degree or diploma in nursing (ADN). Due to recommendations to change entry level to practice to the bachelor’s degree in nursing (BSN), there are now more than 700 RN to BSN programs in the United States. The purpose of this qualitative systematic review was to understand more about what occurs when an RN returns to school for a BSN and to develop a model of the transition. The qualitative findings of 19 research reports were included, which translates to approximately 445 RNs’ perspectives on the RN to BSN transition. A visual representation of the RN to BSN transition was also generated. A seamless transition of the RN to a BSN does not exist at this time. The results are useful to nurses, academicians, and health care organizations as they move to meet current recommendations

Curriculum Development and Faculty Perceptions of an RN to BSN Program Development at a Community College
No full textTransformative change is occurring in the nursing profession, higher education, and healthcare. There is increased employer demand for baccalaureate prepared nurses. Currently, associate degree programs educate the majority of entry-level nurses in the United States. One solution to meet the increased demand for baccalaureate prepared nurses is to increase access to Registered Nurse to Bachelor of Science in Nursing (RN to BSN) education by offering RN to BSN programs at a community college. The purpose of this qualitative study was to explore faculty’s perceptions of how to design and implement a RN to BSN degree at a community college. Findings from this study indicated nursing faculty are knowledgeable, supportive, and engaged in the process of RN to BSN curriculum development. Participants discussed the history of RN to BSN education and the internal and external impetuses to develop educational opportunities for associate and diploma prepared registered nurses. Participants also shared their perceptions of RN to BSN program vision, purposes, design, essential curriculum components, instructional considerations, and logistical considerations for implementation. This executive position paper provides a proposed plan for the design and implementation of an RN to BSN program at a community college. This study illustrates a vision of an RN to BSN program, documents accomplishments concurrent with this study, and presents a 3-year plan to implement an online RN to BSN program at a community college
