Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts
We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued
use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. We have done our best to complete the author checklist relating to the use of animals in the hut study. Note that the objective for the hut study was to evaluate the IRS treatment applications for residual efficacy against Anopheles mosquitoes, including the local An. coluzzii mosquito population. Cows were only used to attract mosquitoes into the huts and no tests were carried out directly on the cows. The author checklist is intended for use with studies where experiments are carried out on animals, which is why we have had such difficulty in completing this for the hut study, as many of the questions do not relate to how the cows were used

This research focuses on the fundamental understanding of permeability and its relationship with various physical parameters due to its importance in different contexts, such as the field of petroleum engineering, the design of drainage systems, and the construction of earth dams. A comprehensive study was conducted on ten types of sands, leading to the development of an innovative experimental correlation between the permeability of a granular material, its average diameter, and its density index. This correlation provides an efficient method for evaluating sand permeability based on its physical characteristics, thus avoiding the need for lengthy experimental procedures.
The research also explores two major aspects. Firstly, it introduces the development of an analytical model based on the van Genuchten model to predict the water retention curve of granular materials, accompanied by an in-depth study of influential parameters. Notably, the model relies on a singular criterion in soil selection: the physical property of the particle size distribution curve, allowing the determination of Dg50 and Cu values. This model offers a precise description of the water retention curve and enables the estimation of the pore size distribution without the necessity for experimental tests. The use of the proposed model allowed predicting the water retention curves of granular soil for any value of the density index. The results confirm that the uniformity of particle size distribution curves corresponds to a satisfactory uniformity of the pore size distribution. Additionally, the observation of an increase in suction with an increase in density index aligns with experimental data, highlighting distinctive properties of unsaturated soils.
Subsequently, the study delves into the evolution of the microstructure of granular materials under various physical and mechanical conditions. Water retention curves are transformed into pore size distribution curves, allowing for an in-depth analysis of microstructural changes under high constraints.
In summary, this work provides a significant contribution by offering practical correlations for evaluating the permeability of granular materials and developing a robust analytical model to predict the water retention curve. Furthermore, it thoroughly explores the evolution of microstructure under different conditions, providing crucial insights into the understanding of granular materials subjected to high constraints

RESUME : Cette recherche se concentre sur la compréhension fondamentale de la perméabilité et de sa relation avec divers paramètres physiques, en raison de son importance dans différents contextes tels que le domaine du génie pétrolier, la conception des systèmes de drainage, ainsi que la construction de barrages en terre. Une étude approfondie a été menée sur dix types de sables, aboutissant au développement d'une corrélation expérimentale novatrice entre la perméabilité d'un matériau granulaire, son diamètre moyen, et son indice de densité. Cette corrélation offre une méthode efficace pour évaluer la perméabilité d'un sable en se basant sur ses caractéristiques physiques, évitant ainsi la nécessité de procédures expérimentales longues.
Le travail explore également deux aspects majeurs. Tout d'abord, il présente le développement d'un modèle analytique basé sur le modèle de van Genuchten, visant à prédire la courbe de rétention d'eau des matériaux granulaires, avec une étude approfondie des paramètres influents. Notamment, le modèle se base sur un critère unique dans la sélection des sols : la propriété physique de la courbe de distribution des particules, permettant la détermination des valeurs de Dg50 et de Cu. Ce modèle propose une description précise de la courbe de rétention d'eau et permet d'estimer la distribution de la taille d'accès aux pores sans recourir à des essais expérimentaux. Les résultats confirment que l'uniformité des courbes de taille des particules correspond à une uniformité satisfaisante de la distribution de la taille d'accès aux pores. De plus, l'observation d'une augmentation de la succion avec l'accroissement de l'indice de densité concorde avec les données expérimentales, mettant en lumière les propriétés distinctives des sols non saturés. Par la suite, l'étude se penche sur l'évolution de la microstructure des matériaux granulaires sous différentes conditions physiques et mécaniques. Les courbes de rétention d'eau sont converties en courbes de distribution de taille d'accès aux pores, permettant d'analyser de manière approfondie les changements de microstructure sous contraintes élevées.
En résumé, ce travail apporte une contribution significative en fournissant des corrélations pratiques pour évaluer la perméabilité des matériaux granulaires et en développant un modèle analytique robuste pour prédire la courbe de rétention d'eau. En outre, il explore de manière approfondie l'évolution de la microstructure sous différentes conditions, offrant ainsi des perspectives cruciales pour la compréhension des matériaux granulaires soumis à des contraintes élevées
