The deformability of hybrid (carbon and glass fibers) pultruded profiles
The experimental results on structural behaviour of "I" shape hybrid pultruded beams are presented in this study. The aim of this research was to provide more detailed informations on the structural behaviour especially for a design structure view point - of hybrid pultruded beams, and also to give a comparison with the structural performance of GFRP pultruded beams.
The hybrid pultruded beam was made with carbon and glass fibers with thermosetting matrix vinylestere. The carbon fiber was applied in the flange, to improve the bending stiffness, beside the glass fiber was applied in the web.
However the approach to the analysis of the type of beam is not easy, in fact, for structural design we have not only the orthotropic behaviour of the material - with low value of longitudinal modulus E and the shear modulus G - but also the different mechanical characteristics of two kind of fibers.
The carried out test regards three points bending test with different slenderness parameters, the axial compression test, and also the evaluation of shear effect in evaluation of deformation in deflected beams.
Finally, the research proposes also the comparison - for a structural design point of view - with the pultruded shapes with the same geometry, the same type of matrix, but made only with glass fibers (GFRP)
