    Changes of major ion concentrations in melting snow and terrestrial waters from northern Victoria Land, Antrctica

    Concentrations of major ions (Cl-, NO3-, SO42-, Na+, K+, Mg2+, Ca2+) were measured in melting snow and water samples from streams and lakes in ice-free areas throughout northern Victoria Land. Most ions in snow and terrestrial water derive from the marine environment and their concentrations are extremely variable in space and time, especially in water systems without melting snow and ice. The distance from the sea, snow sublimation, changes in water inflow, evaporative concentrations, weathering and drainage processes in the catchment, nesting seabirds and aquatic microbiota. are among factors which most influence ion composition variability. Comparisons with data from twelve years ago in the same lakes indicate that the warming trend detected at Terra Nova Bay station during this period did not affect the biogeochemistry of water systems. Waters from a lake which recently experienced a lowering of the water level showed a remarkable increase in SO42- concentrations. We hypothesized that the differential mobility of sulphate salts in the Antarctic soils, the biosynthesis of sulphur compounds in the lake, and the progressive decrease of the water volume are factors involved in the increase of SO42- concentrations

    Water geochemistry and sedimentary pigments in northern Victoria Land lakes, Antarctica

    Total concentrations of algal pigments, organic C, C, N, P and S were determined in surface sediments from the littoral zone of 21 lakes in ice-free areas of northern Victoria Land (Antarctica) with different climatic and environmental conditions. Concentrations of major ions and nutrients were also determined in water samples from the same lakes. The latter samples had extremely variable chemical compositions; however, all the lakes resulted oligotrophic. Pigment concentrations in surface sediments were comparable to those reported for other Antarctic lakes and lower than those in oligotrophic lakes at lower latitudes. Cyanophyta, Chlorophyta and Bacillariophyta were the main taxa identified. These taxa correspond to those reported in previous microscopy-based studies on Antarctic phytoplankton and phytobenthos. Discriminant Function Analysis and Canonical Correspondence Analysis of data indicate that the distribution of pigments in these Victoria Land lakes depends mainly on their geographical location (particularly the distance from the sea) and nutrient status. © 2007 Springer-Verlag

    Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed.
