The Bonnet theorem for statistical manifolds
We prove the Bonnet theorem for statistical manifolds, which states that if a statistical manifold admits tensors satisfying the Gauss–Codazzi–Ricci equations, then it is locally embeddable to a flat statistical manifold (or a Hessian manifold). The proof is based on the notion of statistical embedding to the product of a vector space and its dual space introduced by Lauritzen. As another application of Lauritzen’s embedding, we show that a statistical manifold admitting an affine embedding of codimension 1 or 2 is locally embeddable to a flat statistical manifold of the same codimension.journal articl
Protecting Animals 36: Author Witi Ihimaera
In this very special episode of Knowing Animals I am joined by beloved New Zealand author Witi Ihimaera. Witi has written many books featuring nonhuman animals. He offers us a non-colonial lens through which to think about the human/nonhuman relationship
Aspects of Holographic Superconductivity
In this thesis we study two different aspects of holographic superconductivity. First we study fully backreacting Gauss-Bonnet (GB) holographic superconductors in 5 bulk spacetime dimensions. We explore the system’s dependence on the scalar mass for both positive and negative GB coupling, α. We find that when the mass approaches the Breitenlohner-Freedman (BF) bound and α→(L^2)/4 the effect of backreaction is to increase the critical temperature, Tc , of the system: the opposite of its effect in the rest of parameter space. We also find that reducing α below zero increases Tc and that the effect of backreaction is diminished. We study the zero temperature limit, proving that this system does not permit regular solutions for a non-trivial, tachyonic scalar field and constrain possible solutions for fields with positive masses. We investigate singular zero temperature solutions in the Einstein limit but find them to be incompatible with the concept of GB gravity being a perturbative expansion of Einstein gravity. We study the conductivity of the system, finding that the inclusion of backreaction hinders the development of poles in the conductivity that are associated with quasi-normal modes approaching the real axis from elsewhere in the complex plane.
In the latter part of the thesis we investigate asymptotically anti de-Sitter (adS) and Lifshitz black holes in a bulk gravitational model that has a consistent embed-ding in string theory and that permits an arbitrary dynamical exponent, z ≥ 1. We find numerically that for both types of asymptotic spacetime there exists a two parameter family of black hole solutions. In the adS case these numerical solutions are supported by analytic solutions in the ‘probe’ or non-backreacting limit. Finally, we study the dependence of the black hole’s temperature on these two parameters
Cyclization of [alpha]-substituted [alpha],[omega]-diphenylalkyl carbenium ions: Reactivity of [alpha]-trifluoromethylbenzyl cations vs. [alpha]-methylbenzyl cations
Sürig T, Grützmacher H-F, Bégué J-P, Bonnet-Delpon D. Cyclization of [alpha]-substituted [alpha],[omega]-diphenylalkyl carbenium ions: Reactivity of [alpha]-trifluoromethylbenzyl cations vs. [alpha]-methylbenzyl cations. Organic Mass Spectrometry. 1993;28(3):254-261.1-(n-Phenylalkyl)-1-trifluoromethylbenzyl cations and the alpha-CH3-substituted analogues were generated from the corresponding protonated benzyl alcohols by loss of H2O during chemical ionization (CI). The unimolecular reactions of these ions and of their derivatives specifically deuterated at the 1-phenyl group were studied using the CI (methane) and CI (isobutane) mass spectra and the mass-analysed ion kinetic energy spectra. The characteristic reaction giving rise to abundant ions in all the spectra is the elimination of C6H6 initiated by an electrophilic attack of the benzyl cation on the remote phenyl group. The alpha-CH3- and alpha-CF3-substituted benzyl cations respond differently to the effect of internal excess energy on the intensity of the benzene elimination process and on the H-D exchange accompanying this process of the deuterated ions. This different reactivity of both series of ions demonstrates unambiguously that the alpha-CF3-substituted benzyl cations correspond to destabilized benzyl cations exhibiting the particular reactivity of 'hot' carbenium ions in the gas phase
I Think I Am Philip K. Dick
For years, noted writer Laurence A. Rickels often found himself compared to novelist Philip K. Dickthough in fact Rickels had never read any of the science fiction writers work. When he finally read his first Philip K. Dick novel, while researching for his recent book The Devil Notebooks , it prompted a prolonged immersion in Dicks writing as well as a recognition of Rickelss own long-documented intellectual pursuits. The result of this engagement is I Think I Am: Philip K. Dick , a profound thought experiment that charts the wide relevance of the pulp sci-fi author and paranoid visionary. I Think I Am: Philip K. Dick explores the science fiction authors meditations on psychic reality and psychosis, Christian mysticism, Eastern religion, and modern spiritualism. Covering all of Dicks science fiction, Rickels corrects the lack of scholarly interest in the legendary Californian author and, ultimately, makes a compelling case for the philosophical and psychoanalytic significance of Philip K. Dicks popular and influential science fiction.Intro -- Contents -- Introjection -- Part I -- Endopsychic Allegories -- Schreber Guardian -- Belief System Surveillance -- Part II -- Deeper Problems -- Veil of Tears -- Go West -- Dick Manfred -- Timing -- Glimmung -- Part III -- Spiritualism Analogy -- Imitating the Dead -- Indexical Layer -- Ilse -- Hammers and Things -- Crucifictions -- Over There -- Martyrology -- Can't Live, Can't Live -- Lola -- Umwelt, Mitwelt, and Eigenwelt -- Outer Race -- The German Introject -- Part IV -- Materialism, Idealism, and Cybernetics -- Startling Stories -- A Couple of Years -- Android Empathy -- Homunculus and Robot -- ALL OF YOU ARE DEAD. Rapid variability of accretion in AM Herculis
We present the last pointed observation of AM Her carried out during the life of the BeppoSAX satellite. It was bright at the beginning of the observation, but dropped to the lowest X-ray level ever observed so far. The X-ray emission during the bright period is consistent with accretion occurring onto the main pole of the magnetized white dwarf. The rapid change from the active state to the low deep state indicates a drop by a factor of 17 in the accretion rate and hence that accretion switched-off. The short timescale (less than one hour) of this variation still remains a puzzle. Optical photometry acquired simultaneousy during the low state shows that the white dwarf remains heated, although a weak emission from the accretion stream could be still present. Cyclotron radiation, usually dominating the V and R bands, is negligible thus corroborating the possibility that AM Her was in an off-accretion state. The X-ray emission during the inactive state is consistent with coronal emission from the secondary late type star
Delirium, postoperative cognitive deterioration and the Charles Bonnet Syndrome in patients undergoing cataract surgery
In the eye hospital of the Technical University of Munich, 92 patients undergoing cataract surgery were examined for delirium, postoperative cognitive deterioration and Charles Bonnet Syndrome. One patient was diagnosed as delirious at admission, none of the patients developed a postoperative delirium. A risk group for a complicated postoperative course were patients with a cognitive deficit diagnosed before the operation (n=11) and patients who experienced a postoperative cognitive deterioration (n=8). Risk factors for developing a postoperative cognitive deterioration were: living in a home (home for the aged or nursing home) and having a marked loss of vision in the eye which is not to undergo surgery. None of our patients examined fulfilled the diagnostic criteria for Charles Bonnet Syndrome. On the basis of our own case observations (patients with photopsia etc.), our chosen criteria for diagnosing the Charles Bonnet Syndrome were discussed
BeppoSAX observations of AM Her type stars
First BeppoSAX-NFI observations obtained in the framework of a program aiming to detect simultaneously the soft and hard X-ray emissions and the long term behaviour of AM Her type stars are presented. BL Hyi, the prototipe AM Her and the peculiar V1309 Ori are systems characterized by a strong variability and are elucidative examples of different accretion patterns and modes which can be present in these systems
Crystallographic studies of novel inhibitors of [beta]-lactamases
Bacterial expression of -lactamases is the most widespread resistance mechanism to -lactam antibiotics. There is a pressing need for novel, non- -lactam inhibitors of these enzymes [1]. Our efforts to overcome bacterial resistance mechanisms have been directed towards novel, non -lactam inhibitors of AmpC -lactamase, a class C enzyme responsible of resistance to antibiotics treatment in gram- negative bacteria.
Through a structure-based approach, we discover novel inhibitors for this enzyme, with covalent mechanism of action such as boronic acid derivatives and with no-covalent, competitive mechanism of action, such as thiophene-2-carboxylic acid derivative [2].
In one case we were able to extend the inhibitory activity towards class A -lactamases, obtaining a broad spectrum, highly potent inhibitor.
Some inhibitors were active in cell culture, reversing resistance to the third generation cephalosporin ceftazidime in bacterial pathogens expressing AmpC and did not up-regulate -lactamase expression in cell culture.
The structure-based design, synthesis, biological evaluation and the crystallographic studies of such novel inhibitors will be described.
