    Enhancing energy awareness through the analysis of thermal energy consumption

    No full text
    Energy efficiency by means of reduction in wasteful energy consumption is a growing policy priority for many countries. Innovative systems should be designed to continuously monitor a smart city environment and provide all stakeholders the tools to improve energy efficiency. This paper presents the EDEN platform, designed to collect and analyze thermal energy consumption of residential and public building heating systems. EDEN is being deployed in a major Italian city and collects energy consumption measurements through an extensive smart metering grid involving thousands of buildings. EDEN also collects and analyzes indoor climate conditions, and user feedbacks, such as their thermal comfort perception, by means of an ad-hoc social network. Collected data are further enriched with temporal and spatial information at different abstraction levels and meteorological data available as an open source data set. Several technical Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) have been defined to inform users on their building thermal energy consumption, while user-friendly KPIs present energy savings or over-consumptions in an informative fashio

    Differences among young adults, adults and elderly chronic myeloid leukemia patients

    Abstract BACKGROUND: The incidence of chronic myeloid leukemia (CML) increases with age, but it is unclear how the characteristics of the disease vary with age. In children, where CML is very rare, it presents with more aggressive features, including huge splenomegaly, higher cell count and higher blast cell percentage. PATIENTS AND METHODS: To investigate if after childhood the disease maintains or loses these characteristics of aggressiveness, we analyzed 2784 adult patients, at least 18 years old, registered by GIMEMA CML WP over a 40-year period. RESULTS: Young adults (YAs: 18-29 years old) significantly differed from adults (30-59 years old) and elderly patients (at least 60 years old) particularly for the frequency of splenomegaly (71%, 63% and 55%, P < 0.001), and the greater spleen size (median value: 4.5, 3.0 and 1.0 cm, P < 0.001). According to the EUTOS score, that is age-independent, high-risk patients were more frequent among YAs, than among adult and elderly patients (18%, 9% and 6%, P < 0.001). In tyrosine kinase inhibitors-treated patients, the rates of complete cytogenetic and major molecular response were lower in YAs, and the probability of transformation was higher (16%, 5% and 7%, P = 0.011). CONCLUSIONS: The characteristics of CML or the host response to leukemia differ with age. The knowledge of these differences and of their causes may help to refine the treatment and to improve the outcome. Marine bioprospecting - Trawling for treasure and pleasure

    No full text
    This Microreview seeks to highlight the molecular diversity present in marine organisms, and illustrate by example some of the challenges encountered in exploring this resource. Marine natural products exhibit an impressive array of structural motifs, many of which are derived from biosynthetic pathways that are uniquely marine, Most importantly some marine metabolites possess noteworthy biological activities, activities that have potential application outside marine ecosystems, such as antibiotics, antiparasitics, anticancer agents etc... The isolation, spectroscopic characterisation and assignment of stereostructures to these unusual metabolites is both challenging and rewarding. Examples featured in this Microreview follow a common theme in that they are all recent accounts of the isolation of natural products from Australian marine sponges, carried out in the laboratories of the author. In addition to presenting brief comments on specific structure elucidation strategies, an effort is made to emphasize techniques for solving stereochemical issues, as well as to speculate on the biosynthetic origins of some of these exotic marine natural products

    La disciplina del restauro costituisce un ponte di collegamento fra le materie di carattere umanistico e quelle di carattere tecnico che si integrano le une alle altre nell’obiettivo comune di perpetuare i valori storici e architettonici di cui il monumento è depositario. Uno studio completo non può che essere effettuato mediante l’applicazione e l’integrazione di una vasta gamma di tecniche di rilievo, distruttive e non, mirate all’analisi delle strutture, allo studio dei terreni di fondazione e del suolo, senza tralasciare la valutazione degli effetti ambientali. Coniugando la tecnica avanzata del rilievo eseguito con il laser scanner con le indagini tematiche che si sviluppano attraverso la lettura stratigrafi ca verticale si conseguono risultati importanti per comprendere la complessità storico-costruttiva del monumento e quindi utili per il progetto di conservazione.Published12-161.10. Emerging therapeutic strategies for targeting chronic myeloid leukemia stem cells

    No full text
    Chronic myeloid leukemia (CML) is a clonal myeloproliferative disorder. Current targeted therapies designed to inhibit the tyrosine kinase activity of the BCR-ABL oncoprotein have made a significant breakthrough in the treatment of CML patients. However, CML remains a chronic disease that a patient must manage for life. Although tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKI) therapy has completely transformed the prognosis of CML, it has made the therapeutic management more complex. The interruption of TKI treatment results in early disease progression because it does not eliminate quiescent CML stem cells which remain a potential reservoir for disease relapse. This highlights the need to develop new therapeutic strategies for CML to achieve a permanent cure, and to allow TKI interruption. This review summarizes recent research done on alternative targeted therapies with a particular focus on some important signaling pathways (such as Alox5, Hedgehog, Wnt-b-catenin, autophagy, and PML) that have the potential to target CML stem cells and potentially provide cure for CML. © 2013 Ahmad Hamad et al.Assouline S, 2011, CURR ONCOL, V18, pE71;
