A coleção particular da Cosac Naify: explorações sensíveis do gosto do livro

    No full text
A publishing house that stands out in the Brazilian scenario due to its character of experimenting with the book s form is Cosac Naify, especially in its Coleção Particular ( Particular Collection ). This series of books has been proposed with the intention to house western literature classics, with brief narratives, in editions in which the graphic project is explored in order to intensify the reading experience and the ways of experiencing the text. Up to the present time there are seven different titles in the collection, whose graphic projects constitute the corpus of this research: Primeiro amor (Samuel Beckett), Bartleby, o escrivão (Herman Melville), A fera na selva (Henry James), Zazie no metrô (Raymond Queneau), Flores (Mario Bellatin), Museu do Romance da Eterna (Macedonio Fernández) and Avenida Niévski (Nikolai Gógol). The main objective of this research is to analyze the graphic designs of these books, aiming to understand the ways through which the collection operates singular procedures that produce a sensitive experience whose effect of meaning is the particular in each work, in the collection and in the publishing house. It has been verified that the effect of meaning of particular perceived in the publications originates in the way the graphic designs of these books explore their plastic configurations, syncretically figurativizing contents from the verbal text, as well as in the various metadiscursive relations that the books maintain with the history, structure and production processes of the book, plus interdiscursive and intersemiotic relations with various media and arts. The theoretical framework consists mainly in the discursive semiotics developed by A. J. Greimas and its plastic and sensitive developments made by J.-M. Floch, E. Landowski and A. C. de Oliveira. Therefore, this research intended to cover both intelligibility and sensibility in the production of meaning in each work of the Coleção Particular, in their interactions with each other, with other collections and with the publishing house itself. From this dynamics of meanings, based on the dynamics of interactions, we have reached an identity configuration of Cosac Naify in the Brazilian publishing market: the publisher develops in its readers a taste for books, and proposes through the sensitive experience of the book a contract of loyalty to its readershipConselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento Científico e Tecnológic

    Intersemioticidades do objeto literário

Essa proposição busca integrar as questões usualmente abordadas pelos estudos da “tradução intersemiótica” e do “sincretismo de linguagens” em uma mesma problemática geral, das inter-relações entre linguagensThe object of study of this thesis is what could be called an “intersemiotic literary object”: a material and spatiotemporal determination invested with meaning, which comprises a discourse perceived as “literary” by the social body, built from relations between different semiotics. In this beginning of the 21st century, in the editorial market and especially in spaces such as printed art fairs or bookstores specialized in independent publications, an intensified presence of this type of contemporary work is perceived. These are publications that are engaged in constructing a new aesthetics of the book, as they are marked by the plastic exploration of their formants and by the investment in connections between various semiotic systems (sculpture, photography, infographics, etc.). Based on an observation of the editorial scenario, a reference corpus is defined, composed by three publishing houses with similar approaches in the treatment of their publications: Lote 42 (Brazil), Visual Editions (England) and Éditions Non Standard (France). From each publisher, a single book considered emblematic is selected for analysis: Inquérito Policial: Família Tobias (Ricardo Lísias), Tree of Codes (Jonathan Safran Foer) and Lettres du Havre (Élodie Boyer and Jean Segui). The research problem is: how are intersemiotic relations constructed in the literary objects for adults in the 21st century? This generates complementary issues, which encompass: (1) the very conception of the literary, (2) the relations between media, (3) the sensitive apprehension as a condition of reading, (4) the relations between printed and digital and (5) the types of risks assumed by publishers. The theoretical and methodological framework employed in the analysis consists of the Semiotic theory developed by A. J. Greimas and its developments, especially the studies on plasticity by J.-M. Floch, on the interaction, risk and sense regimes by E. Landowski and on syncretism by A. C. de Oliveira. Our main hypothesis, that the types of relations between semiotics would provide the reader with the lived experience of the construction of the literary object itself through its various languages, is validated throughout the study of each selected work. With the objective of building a typology of intersemioticity modes in literary objects, the main result is the elaboration of such a schematization, based on the opposition established between intersemiotic relations articulated internally in the literary object (“syncretized”) and those processed between the literary work and manifestations external to it (“discretized”). This proposition seeks to integrate issues usually addressed by the studies of “intersemiotic translation” and “language syncretism” in the same general problem, that one of the inter-relationships between languagesConselho Nacional de Pesquisa e Desenvolvimento Científico e Tecnológico - CNP

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

    Variations on the Author

“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis

Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more sophisticated methods

We have done our best to complete the author checklist relating to the use of animals in the hut study. Note that the objective for the hut study was to evaluate the IRS treatment applications for residual efficacy against Anopheles mosquitoes, including the local An. coluzzii mosquito population. Cows were only used to attract mosquitoes into the huts and no tests were carried out directly on the cows. The author checklist is intended for use with studies where experiments are carried out on animals, which is why we have had such difficulty in completing this for the hut study, as many of the questions do not relate to how the cows were used
