Uniform boundedness for the optimal controls of a discontinuous, non-convex Bolza problem

We consider a Bolza type optimal control problem of the form min Jt{y,u) :=jf A(s, y(s), u(s)) ds + g{y(T)) Subject to: y G W1,1([t,T];Rn) y = b(y)u a.e. 5 G [t,T], y(t) = x u(s) G U a.e. 5 G [t,T], 1/(5) G 5 Vs G [t,T],where A(s.y.u) is locally Lipschitz in s, just Borel in (y,u), b has at most a linear growth and both the Lagrangian A and the end-point cost function g may take the value +00. If b = 1, g = 0, (Pt,x) is the classical problem of the Calculus of Variations. We suppose the validity of a slow growth condition in u, introduced by Clarke in 1993, including Lagrangians of the type A(s,y, u) = \J 1 + M2 and A(s.y.u) = |u| - y/\u\ and the superlinear case. We show that, if A is real valued, any family of optimal pairs (ym,u.) for (Pt,x) whose energy Jt(y~, is equi-bounded as (t,x) vary in a compact set, has - equibounded controls. Moreover, if A is extended valued, the same conclusion holds under an additional lower semicontinuity assumption on (s, u) 1-> A(s, y, u) and requiring a condition on the structure of the effective domain. No convexity, nor local Lipschitzianity is assumed on the variables (y,u). As an application we obtain the local Lipschitz continuity of the value function under slow growth assumptions

LAGRANGIAN SUBMANIFOLD LANDSCAPES OF NECESSARYCONDITIONS FOR MAXIMA IN OPTIMAL CONTROL:GLOBAL PARAMETERIZATIONS AND GENERALIZED SOLUTIONS

Abstract. We construct global generating functions of the initial and of the evolution Lagrangian sub- manifolds related to a Hamiltonian flow. These global parameterizations are realized by means of Amann– Conley–Zehnder reduction. In some cases, we have to to face generating functions that are weakly quadratic at infinity; more precisely, degeneracy points can occurs. Therefore, we develop a theory which allows us to treat possibly degenerate cases in order to define a Chaperon–Sikorav–Viterbo weak solution of a time- dependent Hamilton-Jacobi equation with a Cauchy condition given at time t = T (T > 0). The starting motivation is to study some aspects of Mayer problems in optimal control theory

Exploiting semantics for constructing and comparing occupational and educational-driven qualifications: the TIPTOE project

In recent years, mobility of students and workers started to be considered as a way for answering skill shortages in the European labor world. However, in order to implement effective mobility practices, suitable instruments supporting transparency and readability of the outcomes of learning processes as well as of the needs of companies and employers in general have to be developed. In fact, though some instruments have been introduced (like, for instance, the European Qualification Framework, EQF, the European Credit system for Vocational Education and Training, ECVET, etc.), they are often seen as theoretical tools rather than a practical help for involved stakeholders. In this work, the results of the TIPTOE project, a transnational initiative funded by the European Commission under the Lifelong Learning Programme are illustrated. In particular, the semantic-based methodology for the construction of a European-wide profile mixing education and labor worlds perspectives in the trade sector is discussed. Furthermore, a number of tools allowing end-users to compare owned qualifications to the reference one and supporting stakeholders in the reading of national educational and occupational profiles in the EQF dimension are presente

Industrial district firms do not smile: Structuring the value chain between local and global

    No full text
Defined as local manufacturing systems, industrial districts have been recog- nized as particularly important for the location of firms’ manufacturing activities intertwined with innovation processes. The debate on the interna- tionalization of production has stressed the low value related to manufactur- ing within value chain activities (smile framework), emphasizing the need to focus on high value-added activities (R&D or marketing). Following multi- national enterprises’ internationalization strategies, also district firms have progressively offshored their production phases in the past years. However, recent studies focused on backshoring have revamped the attention on the domestic control of production for firms’ competitiveness. This chapter explores district firms’ location choices for manufacturing activities between local and global. Based on an empirical analysis of about 260 Italian district firms specialized in mechanics, furniture, and fashion and supported by a case study investigation, our results show that despite district internationali- zation processes, a non-negligible amount of firms still carry out in-house or through outsourcing production activities at district level. Larger firms couple district production and long-term upstream outsourced internationali- zation activities. The district system confirms its role of pooling specialized competences and product know-how, being decisive for firms’ innovation and responsiveness to national and international markets. Backshoring, instead, is a very limited phenomenon and linked to upgrading strategies
