Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Quantified evaluation of energy cropped (sorghum and maize) land use systems with conventional and reduced inputs, on two soil types in Thessaly plain, Greece
To evaluate the effect of cover cropping faba bean with maize or fibre sorghum, compared to monocrop cultivation, on growth, yield as well as on nitrogen utilization efficiency (NUE) and N recovery fraction of the subsequent crops, field experiments were carried out in central Greece, on a clayey and on a sandy soil over a period of three years. A factorial combination of four nitrogen application rates (0, 80, 160, 240 kg ha-1 for maize and 0, 50, 100, 150 kg ha-1 for sorghum) and three legume treatments (incorporated into the topsoil or harvested before the sowing of energy crop and mono-cropping) were tested in a split plot design in three blocks. Growth parameters and dry biomass productivity were monitored by means of subsequent destructive samplings and data from field experiments were analyzed in combination with mean energy production and greenhouse gas emission factors described in the literature, in an effort to visualize the environmental benefits of cover cropping practices. Separate field experiments were undertaken on both soil types to determine the effect of faba bean on infiltration (with the use of double ring infiltrometers) and structural stability (with the use of soil aggregate instability index) of each soil type, over the same three year period. Results demonstrated that cover cropping systems, especially involving faba bean as cover crop or green manure, deserve increased attention and tent to be superior to the traditional monocrop systems in quantitative and qualitative characteristics. They substantially increase the base uptake and the recovery fraction of nitrogen, resulting in large incretion of the final yield productivity of traditional crops as maize and of dynamic energy crops such as fibre sorghum. The results allocated a significant effect of faba bean treatment at almost all cases and for all N fertilization levels. Secondly, significant differences were observed among treatments, both for cover cropping management and for N fertilization, in growth parameters and final biomass yield. Plants grown on plots with previous legume cultivation exhibited higher growth and assimilation rates, LAI and LAD. Increased NUE in plants is vital to enhance both yield and quality of crops, reduce nutrient input cost and improve soil, water and also air quality, as better N use can lead to a reduction of up to 20% of CO2 equivalents ha-1 not emitted for each Kg of chemical N fertilizer applied. Furthermore, high energy production of intercropped treatments, even without N influx must be noticed, taking into consideration that apart from net energy content, intercropping managements assist in higher energy yield and higher energy efficiency. Such energy productivity values are particularly high, proving that this cropping management seems to be a promising alternative commodity for energy production in farming systems with low inputs.Αντικείμενο της μελέτης αποτελεί η ποσοτική ανάλυση της αύξησης και ανάπτυξης, της παραγωγής σε βιομάζα, της αποδοτικότητας χρήσης του αζώτου και των παραμέτρων γύρω από αυτή, σε συστήματα χρήσης γης καλλιεργειών αραβόσιτου και ινώδους σόργου για ενεργειακούς σκοπούς, κάτω από συμβατικές και μειωμένες εισροές αζώτου. Για τον σκοπό αυτό διεξήχθησαν πειράματα σε συνθήκες αγρού, σε ένα αμμοπηλώδες και ένα αργιλώδες έδαφος για τρεις συνεχείς καλλιεργητικούς κύκλους, όπου σύμφωνα με ένα πλήρως τυχαιοποιημένο 4x3x3 πειραματικό σχέδιο υποδιαιρεμένων τεμαχίων, τέσσερις δόσεις ανόργανου αζώτου (0, 80, 160, 240 kg ha-1, για τον αραβόσιτο και 0, 50, 100, 150 kg ha-1, για το ινώδες σόργο) συνδυάστηκαν με τρεις μεταχειρίσεις της καλλιέργειας κουκιών (χειμερινή καλλιέργεια κάλυψης, χλωρή λίπανση, μονοκαλλιέργεια), σε τρεις επαναλήψεις. Η παρακολούθηση των παραμέτρων της αύξησης των καλλιεργειών έγινε με διαδοχικές δειγματοληψίες καθ’ όλη την διάρκεια ανάπτυξης των ενεργειακών καλλιεργειών, ενώ ο προσδιορισμός της τελικής παραγωγής σε βιομάζα και των παραμέτρων της αποδοτικότητας χρήσης αζώτου, έγινε με δειγματοληψία κατά την φυσιολογική ωρίμανση, κάθε έτους. Παράλληλα, διενεργηθήκαν δειγματοληψίες εδάφους για την μελέτη επιδράσεων των κουκιών στην εδαφική δομή, όπως και πειράματα υπολογισμού της διηθητικής ικανότητας του εδάφους, σε κάθε κύκλο εναλλαγής, ενώ επιχειρήθηκε μια σύγκριση των δύο συστημάτων ως προς την δυνητικά παραγόμενη ενέργεια, την καθαρή πρόσοδο και ως προς τις εκτιμώμενες εκπομπές αερίων του θερμοκηπίου κατά την παραγωγή της βιομάζας για κάθε σύστημα. Από τα αποτελέσματα των πειραμάτων που διενεργήθηκαν, προκύπτει πως τα κουκιά (Vicia faba L.) αποτελούν πολύ καλή επιλογή για χρήση ως καλλιέργεια κάλυψης ή χλωρής λίπανσης, σε συστήματα μειωμένων εισροών αζώτου στις καλλιέργειες του αραβόσιτου και του ινώδους σόργου, κατάλληλο για εγκατάσταση και στους δύο εδαφικούς τύπους, με μεγάλη παραγωγικότητα σε σπόρο, αλλά και βιομάζα κατάλληλη για χρήση ως χλωρή λίπανση. Οι καλλιέργειες του αραβόσιτου και του ινώδους σόργου που διαδέχτηκαν καλλιέργεια κουκιών παρουσίασαν μεγαλύτερη βασική απορρόφηση αζώτου και αυξημένο κλάσμα ανάκτησης του αζώτου της ανόργανης λίπανσης, και στους δύο εδαφικούς τύπους, καταλήγοντας σε υψηλότερες παραγωγές σε σπόρο ή ξηρή βιομάζα, και τα φυτά των τεμαχίων στα οποία είχε προηγηθεί καλλιέργεια κουκιών, επέδειξαν μεγαλύτερους ρυθμούς αύξησης σε ύψος, μεγαλύτερο τελικό ύψος, LAI και LAD, υψηλότερους ρυθμούς αφομοίωσης και τελικές παραγωγές σε ξηρή βιομάζα, σε όλες τις περιπτώσεις και για όλους τους συνδυασμούς εφαρμογής αζώτου, ανόργανου, οργανικού ή βιολογικής δέσμευσης. Οι καλλιέργειες κάλυψης φαίνεται να άσκησαν θετική επίδραση στα χαρακτηριστικά του εδάφους που μελετήθηκαν, ενισχύοντας την εδαφική δομή και μειώνοντας την διηθητική ικανότητα του αμμώδους εδάφους, ενώ αντιθέτως αύξησαν την διηθητική ικανότητα και χαλάρωσαν την εδαφική δομή στο αργιλώδες έδαφος. Φαίνεται πως μπορεί να συνεισφέρουν στην βελτίωση του ενεργειακού ισοζυγίου, με υψηλότερη απόδοση ενέργειας κάτω από μικρότερες ενεργειακές εισροές και ταυτόχρονα λιγότερες εκπομπές αερίων του θερμοκηπίου ανά μονάδα παραγόμενης ενέργειας, από την χρήση βιομάζας των δύο ενεργειακών καλλιεργειών που μελετήθηκαν
Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts
We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued
use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more

We have done our best to complete the author checklist relating to the use of animals in the hut study. Note that the objective for the hut study was to evaluate the IRS treatment applications for residual efficacy against Anopheles mosquitoes, including the local An. coluzzii mosquito population. Cows were only used to attract mosquitoes into the huts and no tests were carried out directly on the cows. The author checklist is intended for use with studies where experiments are carried out on animals, which is why we have had such difficulty in completing this for the hut study, as many of the questions do not relate to how the cows were used
