A survey of low-rank updates of preconditioners for sequences of symmetric linear systems
The aim of this survey is to review some recent developments in devising efficient preconditioners for sequences of symmetric positive definite (SPD) linear systems Akxk = bk, k = 1,. arising in many scientific applications, such as discretization of transient Partial Differential Equations (PDEs), solution of eigenvalue problems, (Inexact) Newton methods applied to nonlinear systems, rational Krylov methods for computing a function of a matrix. In this paper, we will analyze a number of techniques of updating a given initial preconditioner by a low-rank matrix with the aim of improving the clustering of eigenvalues around 1, in order to speed-up the convergence of the Preconditioned Conjugate Gradient (PCG) method. We will also review some techniques to efficiently approximate the linearly independent vectors which constitute the low-rank corrections and whose choice is crucial for the effectiveness of the approach. Numerical results on real-life applications show that the performance of a given iterative solver can be very much enhanced by the use of low-rank updates

Parallel Newton-Chebyshev Preconditioners for the Conjugate Gradient method
In this note, we exploit polynomial preconditioners for the conjugate gradient method to solve large symmetric positive definite linear systems in a parallel environment. We put in connection a specialized Newton method to solve the matrix equation and the Chebyshev polynomials for preconditioning. We propose a simple modification of one parameter which avoids clustering of extremal eigenvalues in order to speed-up convergence. We provide results on very large matrices (up to 8.6 billion unknowns) in a parallel environment showing the efficiency of the proposed class of preconditioners

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
A parallel exponential integrator for large-scale discretizations of advection-diffusion models
We propose a parallel implementation of the ReLPM (Real Leja Points Method) for the exponential integration of large sparse systems of ODEs, generated by Finite Element discretizations of 3D advection-diffusion models. The performance of our parallel exponential integrator is compared with that of a parallelized Crank-Nicolson (CN) integrator, where the local linear solver is a parallel BiCGstab accelerated with the approximate inverse preconditioner FSAI. We developed message passing codes written in Fortran 90 and using the MPI standard. Results on SP5 and CLX machines show that the parallel efficiency raised by the two algorithms is comparable. ReLPM turns out to be from 3 to 5 times faster than CN in solving realistic advection-diffusion problems, depending on the number of processors employed
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
