Time and foreign exchange markets
The definition of time is still an open question when one deals with high-frequency time series. If time is simply the calendar time, prices can be modeled as continuous random processes and values resulting from transactions or given quotes are discrete samples of this underlying dynamics. On the contrary, if one takes the business time point of view, price dynamics is a discrete random process, and time is simply the ordering according to which prices are quoted in the market. In this paper, we suggest that the business time approach is perhaps a better way of modeling price dynamics than calendar time. This conclusion comes from testing probability densities and conditional variances predicted by the two models against the experimental ones. The data set we use contains the DEM/USD exchange quotes provided to us by Olsen & Associates during a period of one year from January to December 1998. Digitalization Tools in Social Economy
The issue of digitization is taking on a global reach and is becoming of vital importance for an
increasing number of people and organizations. Technological and digital progress determines
the opportunity and, sometimes, the need to collect, analyze and use the so-called "Big Data";
these can concern every aspect of daily life and their possibility of analysis is constantly
evolving according to the methods and technologies used. The proliferation of data generated
using digital technologies is, in fact, commonly identified as the phenomenon of big data. It is
a real information asset characterized by such high volume, speed and variety as to require
specific analytical technologies and methods for its transformation into value.
The storage and calculation of large amounts of data, the use of data mining techniques,
machine learning and artificial intelligence are instrumental to the extraction of knowledge, to
the resolution of complex problems, in order to support decision-making processes and
optimize business activities. These analytical technologies, concerning Big Data, are not only
the fulcrum of the new research trends and its related implementation, but also represent
possible solutions and guiding strategies for numerous critical aspects of daily life, as they are
producing new paradigms for corporate organizations, both for-profit and non-profit.
The implementation of the Third Sector Reform in Italy, the pandemic crisis and the
international political one, are likely accelerating the process of spreading digital tools in the
world of the social economy. Furthermore, the latest digital technologies can potentially impact
the economic and social accountability and performance of these organizations. The goal of
our research is to verify the state of the art about digitization of social economy organizations
in this period of strong changes. Furthermore, our goal is to analyze, through a systematic and
structured review of the existing literature, also accompanied by quantitative analyzes of a
bibliometric nature, the current trends in digitization that specifically concern the non-profit
world. Recent empirical surveys show that non-profit organizations, engaged in various sectors
of activity, already use digital tools to improve their social performance and achieve sustainable
goals. Examples include blockchain applied to accounting and reporting systems, the use of
artificial intelligence in fundraising activities and the use of NFT (Non-Fungible Token) in the
world of art and culture, etc. In particular, the blockchain is an authentication and verification
technology based on the concept of "distributed ledger" in which blocks of transactions are
recorded in a shared chain. Exploring the potential of blockchain beyond the financial domain
is a fascinating question recently also addressed by management and accounting scholars. From
the first results of our survey, a positive correlation seems to emerge between the level of
digitization of the non-profit organization and the company results achieved. Supporting social
economy organizations to improve their digitization process therefore means contributing to
the achievement of some of the most important objectives of the Italian and EU recovery and
resilience plans and following up on the indications contained in the Action Plan on the social
economy recently. approved by the European Commission. The main objective of this paper is
to provide an exhaustive analysis of the literature about measuring digitalization in social
economy and their evolution over the last 12 years. The search was conducted in the main
academic databases (Scopus and Web of Science, PubMed and google scholar) where 1862
papers were found from 2012 to 2022 related to the topic
Prioritizing pipe replacement: From multiobjective genetic algorithms to operational decision support
Deterioration of water distribution systems and the optimal allocation of limited funds for their rehabilitation represent crucial challenges for water utility managers. Decision makers should be provided with a set of “informed” solutions to select the best rehabilitation plan with regard to available resources and management strategies. In a risk-based scenario, such an approach should result in an element-wise prioritization scheme based on individual pipe rehabilitation/replacement effectiveness. This manuscript describes a framework for devising a short-term decision support tool for pipe replacement. The approach allows for the introduction of economic, technical, and management rationales as separate objectives to produce a pipe-wise prioritization scheme which is achieved by ranking pipes selected during a multiobjective (MO) evolutionary optimization of replacement scenarios. Such a procedure helps overcome the doubts in choosing among the solutions obtained by MO evolutionary optimization due to the diverse sets of pipes selected for replacement even when they are economically comparable. The effectiveness of the entire framework is demonstrated on a real U.K. water distribution system
Calibration of Design Models for Leakage Management of Water Distribution Networks
Water losses in urban water distribution networks (WDN) accelerate the deterioration of such infrastructures. The enhanced hydraulic modelling provides a phenomenological representation of WDN hydraulics, including the modelling of leakages as function of pipe average pressure and deterioration. The methodological use of such models on real WDN was demonstrated to support the planning of leakage management actions. Nonetheless, many water utilities are still in the process of designing flow/pressure monitoring, thus data available are not enough to perform detailed calibration of such models. This work presents a physically based approach for the calibration of WDN hydraulic models aimed at supporting leakage management plans since early stages. The proposed procedure leverages the key role of mass balance in enhanced hydraulic models and the technical insight on pipe deterioration mechanisms for various quantity and quality of available data. Two calibration studies of real WDNs demonstrate the feasibility of the approach and show that the distribution of leakages in the WDN does not much influence the pressure values, which confirms the need for flow measurements at monitoring districts for leakage and asset management
