No full textIt is generally known that forest fires are one of the main factors of environmental degradation. Although a great deal of scientific literature on this issue exists, little progress has been made to help us understand and explain the reasons for their appearance. In this work we highlight how forest fires could also be the result of the adverse effects of environmental policies related to the management of forest fire emergencies. With regard to the area of the Gargano National Park (Southern Italy) and with the use of a panel data technique, we attempt to observe the forest fire phenomenon as related to some of the socio-economic conditions existing there. We find a significant statistical relationship between the number of forest fires and the unemployment level in the area. This provides evidence to argue that when setting up environmental safeguarding policies it is important to take into consideration the socio-economic conditions existing in the area, if the probability of adverse effects is to be avoided and a more socially responsible legislative framework is to be established. Castleman's disease as an uncommon cause of a neck mass
No full textThe detection of Castleman's disease in the neck is uncommon. However, it must be included in the differential diagnosis of a neck mass, together with other lymphoproliferative disorders or thyroid diseases. In 1999, three patients underwent resection of a neck mass of uncertain cytological diagnosis. Frozen-section examinations and immunohistochemical studies using primary antibodies directed against B- and T-cell markers were performed. Very similar features were observed in all cases and the diagnosis of Castleman's disease was based on Frizzera's histological morphological criteria; all cases were of the hyaline vascular type. After surgical resection, the patients remained symptom-free after 51, 50 and 46 months, respectively, without clinical or radiographic signs of local or diffuse recurrence. Surgical removal of a mass of unknown origin located in the central part of the neck is mandatory because it allows a correct diagnosis to be made and is curative when the disease is limited to one site. © 2006 Taylor & Francis
Consciously Uncertain: A Bayesian Analysis of Preferences Formation
Get PDFWe investigate experimentally whether players deliberately use irrelevant market cues to shape their evaluations of a traded item. We implement a repeated Vickrey median price selling auction of an unusual bad where players are informed on the market price and on the three lowest or highest asks. We elicited players’ consideration of market signals through a questionnaire at the end of the auction. We find that extreme information has a stronger influence on players’ evaluations than the market price. However, players’ consideration of the market signals explains their behavioral reactivity to the market price but not to the extremes. Hence, players deliberately use an unbiased estimator of the central tendency of the appraisals distribution, while extreme asks’ influence is consistent with a priming effect
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Castleman's disease as an uncommon cause of a neck mass.
No full textAbstract: Castleman's disease is an uncommon benign disease that causes progressive lymph node enlargement. We report 12 cases of Castleman's disease in the head and neck region in a retrospective review of the medical records of all patients with the pathological diagnosis of Castleman's disease during the period of 1993 through 2002. In the 12 patients, the neck was the most commonly involved site with 9 (75%) cases. Level III was the most common subsite (five cases). The most common sign in our study was an asymptomatic neck mass. No patient had any past histories that required medical attention. Preoperative work up such as fine-needle aspiration and radiographic study was not helpful for diagnostic confirmation. The histopathologic evaluation was the only way to make a definitive diagnosis. The histopathologic subtype of our study was hyaline-vascular type. Excision was curative for all cases. There was no evidence of recurrence with a minimum follow-up duration of 24 months

Get PDF“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
