Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    Get PDF
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

    Variations on the Author

“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

George Orwell'in Hayvan Çiftliği ve 1984 romanlarında sembolizm ve alegori

    No full text
George Orwell's Animal Farm seems to be just an animal story, but it contains deep allegory and symbolism. While criticizing the Russian Revolution and the Stalin era, the work reflects universal truths about all totalitarian regimes and power structures in general. Through various characters and events, Animal Farm allegorically deals with concepts such as power, manipulation, propaganda, and ideological deviations. For example, the pig characters, especially Napoleon, represent Stalin and show how a revolution, which began with the ideal of equality between animals, decays over time. Allegorically, the animals on the farm represent different social classes and political figures: the enslaved animals represent the common people, the pigs represent the rulers, and the farm owners represent the outside world. This is a powerful allegory of how a totalitarian regime is formed, reflecting all the stages of the Russian Revolution. In terms of symbolism, many deep truths are expressed through the symbols used in Animal Farm. For example, the Seven Commandments, initially representing the rules of an idealistic society, become a symbol that is changed and broken over time. The windmill symbolizes how animals exploit their own labour and how ideals are distorted. Overall, Animal Farm is an impressive work that describes the complexities of human nature and social systems through allegory and symbolism. Orwell uses these powerful literary devices to make readers think about the dangers of tyranny, power, and manipulation—not only in the Soviet Union but in all societies in general. Similarly, George Orwell's novel 1984 takes place in a dystopian world and explores the control of a totalitarian regime over individuals. The novel examines the deep meanings expressed through characters, objects, and events. Elements such as the symbolism of Big Brother, the constant surveillance of the eyes, the concept of doublethink, and the punishment ceremonies emphasize the effect of the totalitarian state on individuals. In addition, symbols such as the red cloth and broken glass represent the resistance and freedom of the individual. Orwell's 1984 presents a stark warning about the dangers of absolute power and the loss of individual freedom. By analyzing these symbols, it becomes evident how Orwell critiques fundamental issues such as totalitarianism, power, and personal liberty. These works not only critique the regimes of their time but also encourage readers to reflect on the relevance of these themes in contemporary political and social contexts

This master's thesis aims to highlight the parallels between Shaw's plays Man and Superman (1903) and Heartbreak House (1919) and Nietzsche's philosophy of 'will to power.' Through an analysis of primary and secondary sources, it is observed that John Tanner, the protagonist of Man and Superman, embodies the concept of will to power in his critiques of marriage, societal norms, and conventional values, while the characters in Heartbreak House reflect Nietzsche's concept of decadence, a distorted form of will to power. This thesis will explore the ways in which these two plays engage with Nietzsche's ideas. John Tanner exhibits extraordinary attitudes and thoughts that do not align with Edwardian society, a society unfamiliar with super ideas and the concept of Superman. His views on marriage and his critique of widely accepted societal norms such as Christianity, which are not well-received by any other character in Man and Superman, position him as a spokesperson for Nietzsche. Through Tanner's advocacy for emotional mastery and rational thought, the thesis argues that Shaw critiques the pervasive slave morality of contemporary British society, illustrating how certain beliefs hinder individual autonomy and the concept of self-realization. In contrast, Captain Shotover from Heartbreak House serves as a voice for Shaw's critiques of societal indifference and the disillusionment following World War I. Shotover's commentary exposes the decay of moral values and the superficiality that characterized the British upper class's response to the war, illustrating a broader cultural malaise marked by nihilism, making the characters in Heartbreak House reflections of Nietzsche's concept of decadence, a state of decline where vitality, power, and the traits that make a person strong-willed are suppressed. This thesis posits that Heartbreak House (England) symbolizes a nation grappling with moral bankruptcy and existential despair, reflecting Shaw's keen awareness of the post-war societal landscape. Furthermore, the thesis addresses the political implications of decadent modernism in Heartbreak House, arguing that the democratic systems of the 20th century, steeped in mediocrity, stifled the revolutionary spirit inherent in the human desire for meaning and agency. By examining the interplay between individual and collective wills, it is observed that the potential for upheaval and transformation, even amidst societal decay is conspicuous. This investigation of Shaw's engagement with Nietzschean philosophy illuminates the enduring relevance of these ideas in contemporary discussions about autonomy, moral responsibility, and the quest for significance in a rapidly changing world. In conclusion, this master's thesis explores how Shaw's modern theatre serves as a vehicle for challenging societal norms and taboos, allowing for a transformative dialogue on the necessity of rejecting outdated belief systems. The research conducted ultimately positions Shaw's works as critical reflections of the necessity for self-overcoming in a world rife with decadence

The Golden Compass yalnızca Pullman'ın anlatım ustalığını göstermekle kalmaz, aynı zamanda modern yazında mümkün olanı yeniden tanımlayarak büyülü gerçekçiliğin yansımalı inceliklerini fantastik türün yaratıcı derinliğiyle birleştirir. The Golden Compass by Philip Pullman, the first book in the His Dark Materials trilogy, is a revolutionary masterpiece that blurs the lines between genres by fusing the philosophical and the fantastical. This thesis places Philip Pullman's The Golden Compass in the context of both literary traditions by examining the complex relationships between magical realism and fantasy. The study starts with an overview of Pullman's life and career, revealing the ways in which his literary and philosophical influences shaped his creative work. It explores the fantasy genre, highlighting its defining traits and contrasting them with those of magical realism, a literary style that was popular in Latin America. Fantasy frequently creates separate universes with unique laws, but magical realism subtly incorporates the fantastic into everyday life, challenging existing perceptions of reality. In contrast to the fantasy genre's focus on building completely different worlds, magical realism, a literary trend that gained popularity in Latin America thanks to writers like Gabriel García Márquez, skilfully incorporates exceptional happenings into everyday situations. By referring to his work as "stark realism," Philip Pullman highlights his dedication to depicting human experiences with solid openness, even in magical situations. Despite its imaginative scope, Pullman crafts a world grounded in themes of moral complexity, existential questioning, and the struggle for autonomy. The thesis looks at how Pullman uses magical realist approaches to explore deep subjects like free choice, knowledge, and spirituality by placing The Golden Compass inside this framework. With its origins in Latin American literature, magical realism adds unusual elements to everyday situations and provides a distinctive perspective on human experience. This strategy is woven throughout Pullman's fantasy universe, where ideas like Dust, daemons, and parallel universes serve as more than just story devices—they are also tools for deep philosophical analysis. The story of the book creates a complex critique of authority, organized religion, and the quest for knowledge by bridging the imaginative realm of fantasy with the reflective ambiguity of magical realism. This study emphasizes The Golden Compass's creative approach to genre hybridity by placing it within the larger frameworks of magical realism and fantasy. It looks at how Pullman challenges conventional narratives and draws readers into deep ethical and metaphysical discussions by fusing literary, theological, and philosophical traditions. Pullman creates a story that crosses genre lines by fusing the conceptual complexity and ambiguity of magical realism with the imaginative scope of fantasy, encouraging readers to consider issues of knowledge, freedom, and human experience. This piece highlights the importance of genre hybridity in modern writing and advances our comprehension of Pullman's literary accomplishments. This thesis asserts that The Golden Compass not only demonstrates Pullman's narrative skill but also reimagines what is possible in modern writing by fusing the reflective nuances of magical realism with the imaginative depth of fantasy

Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis

Howard Brenton ve Tariq Ali'nin Iranian Nights oyununda ideoloji kavramı

Sosyal Bilimler Enstitüsü, İngiliz Dili ve Edebiyatı Ana Bilim DalıÇok çeşitli disiplinler arası çalışmalarda kendini gösteren ideoloji kavramı ve eleştirisi, son yıllarda akademik ilginin odak noktası haline gelmiştir. İngiliz edebiyatı, özellikle ideolojinin önemli bir kavram olarak ivme kazanmaya başladığı 19. yüzyıldan itibaren ideolojik temellerin şekillendirdiği eserlere sürekli olarak yer vermiştir. Selman Rüşdi'nin 1988 senesinde Şeytan Ayetleri'ni yayımlamasının ardından, romanda İslam'a karşı yapıldığı algılanan şirk, dünya çapındaki Müslüman topluluklarda yaygın tartışmalara ve protestolara yol açmıştır. In recent years, the concept of ideology and its critique has become a focal subject of academic interest, manifesting across a wide range of interdisciplinary studies. English literature has consistently showcased works shaped significantly by ideological foundations, especially since the 19th century, when ideology began gaining momentum as a significant concept. After Salman Rushdie published The Satanic Verses in 1988, its perceived blasphemy against Islam sparked widespread controversies and protests within Muslim communities worldwide. Despite having gained absolute support from the Iranian people and overthrowing the Shah's regime in 1979, the new leader of Iran, Khomeini, saw his political power wane following the Iran-Iraq war. Initially ignoring the novel, Khomeini, in an effort to regain his power, issued a fatwa in 1989 against The Satanic Verses, calling for the execution of Rushdie and those involved in the novel's publication, thereby uniting Muslims across different geographies under a common cause. However, this move also attracted criticism, with some critics questioning whether freedom of speech truly existed. Politically and literarily active in 1989, Howard Brenton and Tariq Ali, both of whom had contributed to English theatre for decades with their ideologically charged plays and Marxist political backgrounds, collaboratively wrote Iranian Nights in a hurried effort to take a stand against the Rushdie crisis. Due to the inherent ideological motivation behind its creation, the play Iranian Nights employs several frame stories that allegorically satirize the elements of the Rushdie affair, critiquing the underlying ideology in the name of free speech. This thesis aims to investigate Iranian Nights as a case study through Marxist theories that emphasize the concept of ideology and its critique. Due to its sensitive content and brevity, Iranian Nights has long been overlooked by scholars and has only been examined in a few brief critical articles. To address this gap in the literature, this thesis is structured into three chapters. The first chapter presents the background of ideology and its critique through Marxist perspectives. The second chapter provides an overview of the historical and literary context of the play. The third chapter analyses the play using its background and theoretical framework. As a result of this study, the concept of ideology, along with its critique and relevant terminology from a Marxist perspective, has thoroughly been examined, and the historical background of Iranian Nights and its playwrights has been revisited. In conclusion, through the synthesis of these components, this thesis has provided a theoretical and critical examination of the play
