On C2.L-geometries
No full textA C-2.L-geometry is a geometry of rank 3 with elements called points, lines and quads, where residues of points are linear spaces, residues of lines are generalized digons and residues of quads are generalized quadrangles. Some sufficient conditions can be found in the literature for a C-2.L-geometry to be a quotient of a truncated C-n-building. We shall weaken those conditions in this paper

No full textWe study Aat flag-transitive c.c*-geometries. We prove that, apart from one exception related to Sym(6), all these geometries are gluings in the meaning of [6]. They are obtained by gluing two copies of an affine space over GF(2). There are several ways of gluing two copies of the n-dimensional affine space over GF(2). In one way, which deserves to be called the canonical one, we get a geometry with automorphism group G = 2(2n) . L(n)(2) and covered by the truncated Coxeter complex of type D-2n. The non-canonical ways give us geometries with smaller automorphism group (G less than or equal to 2(2n) . (2(n)-1)(n)) and which seldom (never ?) can be obtained as quotients of truncated Coxeter complexes
GF(2)-expansions
No full textLet Γ be a finite geometry of rank n ≥ 2 with a selected type of elements, called 'points'. Let m be the number of 'points' of Γ. Under some mild hypotheses on Γ we can consider an affine expansion of Γ to AG(m, 2). We prove that the geometries obtained by applying this construction to matroids are simply connected. Then we exploit this result to study universal covers of certain geometries arising from hyperbolic quadrics and symplectic varieties over GF(2)
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

Get PDF“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Changing Cities. An Urban Question for the Italian Communist Party
No full textAfter the mobilizations of 1968-1969, a new view towards the urban question began to appear in the discourse of the Italian Communist Party (PCI). It was a change of perspective, which signaled a significant evolution in the communist culture during the seventies: the city emerged alongside the factory as the main place for the formation of a political identity, while the idea of building a sense of a civic urban community started to undermine the traditional primacy of class consciousness. This article examines these questions, highlighting some issues and interpretative models that structured the PCI’s discourse on the city in electoral propaganda, political documents and party press during the seventies
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
Get PDFWe provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature.
