Social workers welcome refugees to the UK – joint statement and call for action by the Association of Professors of Social Work (APSW), British Association of Social Workers (BASW), Joint University Council Social Work Education Committee (JUC SWEC) and Social Work Action Network (SWAN).
In November 2015, the Association of Professors of Social Work, the British Association of Social Workers, the Joint University Council Social Work Education Committee, and the Social Work Action Network (SWAN) agreed a joint statement and call for action on the refugee crisis across the EU. This statement was also supported by colleagues from the legal community in their call for action to the UK government and appeared on Monday 12 October 2015 in The Times and The Guardian. Dr. Kate Smith contributed to drafting this statement
Voices of Social Workers Through The Troubles
This research project, jointly funded by the British Association of Social WorkersNorthern Ireland (BASW NI) and the Northern Ireland Social Care Council(NISCC), was undertaken in 2017–2018.It explores the vital role social workersplayed during The Troubles in Northern Ireland (1969–1998), a subject previously unexamined in such a focused and rigorous manner. At the core of this study is the intention to listen to the voices of social workers who continued to provide services to the most vulnerable people in a society torn apart by political conflict and violence. These voices have not been heard before now. <br/
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Social Work With Autistic People: A BASW Practice Guide
BASW aims to support social work practice when working with autistic people (both children and adults), their families, and supporters. This Guide provides basic awareness, knowledge, and practice guidance on autism and working with autistic people and has been designed to provide this information succinctly so that social workers can gain a level of understanding proportionate to their role. This Guide is designed to assist social workers to understand the sometimes often complicated issues relating to autism and to facilitate best practice with autistic people, their families, and supporters, and aims to assist the reader to think about what they know, what they need to know, what they do not know, and how to find the information/knowledge they need to know about when undertaking work with autistic people
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Underrepresentation of men in social work BASW and MSW programs
The purpose of this study was to explore motivations that drive current Bachelor's of Art in Social Work (BASW) and Master of Social Work (MSW) students to pursue a career in social work, despite the long-standing stereotypes about social work being a "woman's profession." In addition, it explored the perceptions and experiences of men in the program and the workplace. Furthermore, it attempted to investigate the barriers that prevent most men from pursuing this area of study. Results from the 13 participants indicated that a majority of the men pursued social work as a result of an individual's influence. Differential treatment in the program and profession were revealed. Barriers that were perceived to deter men from the profession were its female-dominated occupational status, social stigma, low wages, and lack of awareness of the profession. Lastly, recommendations were made to assist educators with future recruitment of men into social work programs
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis
