Bamford-Stevens reaction assisted synthesis of styrene <i>C</i>-glycosides
No full textModification of carbohydrates and their analogs is hindered due to multi-step synthetic methodologies involving selective protection and deprotection of multiple hydroxyl groups present in the molecule. A highly efficient route for the synthesis of 1-phenyl-2-(β-D-glycopyranosyl)ethenes has been developed from native sugars, which neither requires protection/deprotection of the hydroxyl groups nor use of any metal/metal ions. The key step of the developed methodology is the use of Bamford-Stevens reaction which led to the formation of the desired compounds in moderate to high yields in three steps only.</p

Galaxy Zoo:reproducing galaxy morphologies via machine learning
No full textWe present morphological classifications obtained using machine learning for objects in SDSS DR6 that have been classified by Galaxy Zoo into three classes, namely early types, spirals and point sources/artifacts. An artificial neural network is trained on a subset of objects classified by the human eye and we test whether the machine learning algorithm can reproduce the human classifications for the rest of the sample. We find that the success of the neural network in matching the human classifications depends crucially on the set of input parameters chosen for the machine-learning algorithm. The colours and parameters associated with profile-fitting are reasonable in separating the objects into three classes. However, these results are considerably improved when adding adaptive shape parameters as well as concentration and texture. The adaptive moments, concentration and texture parameters alone cannot distinguish between early type galaxies and the point sources/artifacts. Using a set of twelve parameters, the neural network is able to reproduce the human classifications to better than 90% for all three morphological classes. We find that using a training set that is incomplete in magnitude does not degrade our results given our particular choice of the input parameters to the network. We conclude that it is promising to use machine- learning algorithms to perform morphological classification for the next generation of wide-field imaging surveys and that the Galaxy Zoo catalogue provides an invaluable training set for such purposes

No full textSamuel Bamford is best known for his political autobiography, Passages in the Life of a Radical, regarded by the late E. P. Thompson as “essential reading for any Englishman”. He was also a journalist, poet, and diarist of distinction, and one of the longest-lived and best-documented working men of his age. Samuel Bamford was born in 1788 in the Lancashire weaving village of Middleton, six miles north of Manchester. His father was an artisan weaver and a Methodist, and sometime Governor of the poorhouse in Salford, where half the family, including Samuel’s mother, died of fever; young Samuel himself nearly followed them. He received an intermittent formal education, including spells at the grammar schools in Middleton and Manchester, and then held a succession of jobs ranging from east coast sailor to Manchester warehouseman. He also enlisted for a time in the local Volunteer force. He married his childhood sweetheart, Jemima in 1810, soon after the birth of their only child Ann. He was in Manchester at the time of the Luddite disturbances in Middleton in April 1812, and was back weaving in Middleton as the post-war movement for a radical reform of parliament took off
Sustainable Competitive Advantage Through Servitization: An Investigation Into Servitization Strategy In the Real Estate Development Sector
No full textAchieving sustainable competitive advantage, based upon services provision, is often claimed to be viable for businesses. There has, however, been little evidence captured on the application of aspects of servitization within the real estate development. By applying the RVB theory, the research propositions of this study include understanding how superior performance is driven from organization capabilities and how different organizations develop and position those capabilities to gain competitive advantage. This research was conducted using an exploratory research and in-depth case study. The study suggests that more strategic alignment between servitization decisions and operations management is required to create competitive advantage
