May 20th, 2019 is a historical date. The International Sistem of Units, SI, is fully revised. The measurement unit sizes remain the same, but a the underpinning conceptual strucutre changes: a re-foundation rather than a revision, in responsible continuity. This paper proposes a two-step route: this first part describes the SI in force up to May 20th, the second part that after. For brevity, in this part the refernece to the "old" SI is not repated all the times, rather understood. We adjourn the second part of the paper to the next Probing issue

The measurand in ISO GPS verification

A clear definition of the measurand is an essential precondition for measuring. When verifying conformity to ISO GPS tolerances (verification), the measurand is often unclear, particularly for geometrical tolerances. The tolerance zone is a portion of space whereas the measurand is a scalar quantity, and many such quantities may be derived from the same portion of space. We propose a unified derivation of the measurand in ISO GPS verification matching the designer’s intent. Different types of tolerances are considered, from the easiest to the least obvious as to the derivation of the measurand

Effectiveness of design formulations for injected anchors in masonry elements

    No full text
The paper is aimed to carry out a critical analysis of the available experimental results of pull-out tests related to several types of injected anchors in masonry elements. The database is also comprehensive of the results of some experimental pull-out tests directly carried out by the Authors. Both data on traditional steel bars and on anchors made by innovative materials embedded in several types of masonry made of natural stones and clay bricks are included in the database. Firstly, the main parameters influencing the experimental pull-out forces in the collected database were analyzed. Successively, the experimental values of the pull-out forces were compared with theoretical predictions provided by existing formulations and their reliability was discussed. Finally, regression analyses were carried out on the available database in order to assess new design formulations taking into account the main parameters influencing the performance of injected anchors

New Emerging Prospects in the Pharmacotherapy of Hypertension

    No full text
One of the main approaches to the treatment of cardiovascular diseases is to block pathways and enzymes within the Renin-Angiotensin System (RAS) involved in the modulation of Angiotensin II. Besides this complex system, many other alternative strategies may represent interesting targets for new and more effective cardiovascular therapies. Many different approaches have led medicinal chemists to develop new molecules with the aim of improving current antihypertensive therapies. The development of these new compounds is based on different strategies which include the synthesis of new hybrid compounds in which two or more pharmacophore groups are combined together to give a new entity with better pharmacodynamic properties and fewer side effects, and the development of new molecules with targets such as renin, angiotensin (1-7) and urotensin-II. The aim of this review is to present various approaches used to improve antihypertensive therapy, developing both original molecules with new mechanisms of action (such as renin inhibitors, or Mas-agonists) and new hybrid cardiovascular drugs targeting multiple factors involved in hypertensive disease (NO-ACE inhibitors, NO-sartans, AT1/ETA antagonists)
