Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

Il contributo illustra gli scavi effettuati nel contesto del Bronzo medio e recente di Chiaruccia di Fano e ne analizza gli aspetti culturali e cronologici. The Bronze Age site of Chiaruccia of Fano is known for over thirty years and has been explored on several occasions since the early 80’s because of the intense building activity which involved the area. This paper sheds light on the history of the investigations that have occurred and, in particular, analyzes data resulting from the archaeological excavation took place between 2006 and 2007 that explored an area of about 150 square meters. This shows a selection of the found materials, ceramic and deer horn artefacts, which allows us to date the settlement, which probably had an area of about 2 hectares, to a period between BM3 and the BR, with two distinct levels related to appennine and subappennine cultures. The site is placed coherently among the coeval coastal sites of the Marche born probably due to the traffic in the Adriatic Sea maybe already from the middle phase of the BM. The end of Chiaruccia settlement probably corresponds to a time critical for a wide area that includes the central area of the Po valley and the Adriatic coast of Romagna and Marche
