Oral History Interview with Marcus Ward
The National Museum of the Pacific War presents an interview with Marcus Ward. During college in 1941, Ward completed a flight training program and earned his private pilot’s license. He joined the Army Air Forces in 1941 and was assigned as a copilot on a B-17. From there he went to Tucson and served as an instructor in B-24s. In 1944, after receiving his training in Clovis, New Mexico, Ward served as commander of a B-29 crew. He flew with the 504th Bomb group and went to Tinian in January of 1945. Ward makes comparisons of flying the B-17, B-24 and B-29, as well as their capacity to handle battle damage. Ward goes into detail of what a typical mission was like, starting at the barracks and proceeding through a bombing run. He took cameras aboard to take photographs of their bomb drops, and flew photo reconnaissance missions after strikes to determine the results. Ward was shot down on his 17th mission over Yakama, Japan. He was captured and describes his time with the Kempeitai and at Omori. When the war ended, he recalls B-29s providing food rations to the camps
