Christianity Routes to Rus’ (Legendary and Real)

    No full text
The article examines the long history of penetration of Christian doctrine into Rus. The author analyzes legendary versions of conversion to Christianity of Rus' – coming of St.Andrew onto Kyiv mounts, Arabic authors' evidence about numerous merchants, residents of Rus', which posed as Christians. The author points out that the main way of Christianity to Rus' especially since the middle IX c. was the Byzantine one

Role of ASP5 in rus genetic suppression

The He lab previously identified two Arabidopsis mutants, root uv-b sensitive1 (irus I) and rus 2, that are hypersensitive to very low-fluence-rate UV-B light. In addition, the He lab has identified genetic mutations in ASPARTATE AMINOTRANSFERASE 1 (ASP1), ASP2, and ASP3 that can suppress both rus and rus2. To test whether similar mutations in ASP5 can also suppress rus 1/rus2, I performed site-directed mutagenesis to generate an asp5 mutant that changed position 338 from a proline to a leucine. Constructs carrying either the WT ASP5 or the asp5-P338L genes were introduced into rus I and rus2 mutants. Analysis of the resulting transgenic plants indicates that the asp5-P338L mutation appears to suppress rusl and rus2 phenotypes. I performed yeast two-hybrid experiments to test WT ASP5 and asp5-P338L proteins are physically interacting with RUS1/RUS2 proteins. Taken altogether, my results suggest that ASP5 plays a role in RUS1/RUS2 mediated UV-B responses

Comb-making in medieval Novgard (950-1450). An industry in transition

This is a descriptive and analytical study of combs used for the hygienic and aestheticpurposes of cleaning, disentangling and arranging hair. Hundreds of these products of professional artisans made out of skeletal materials and wood forming the basis of this research, derive from major excavation sites investigated during 1951-2000 in the medieval town of Novgorod (NW Russia). The site covers the extensive overall area of over 23,000sq.m bearing stratified waterlogged deposits and structures dating from ca 950 to ca 1450. The objects in the assemblage are analysed typologically (survey of comb morphological traits) and contextually (chronological and spatial distributional analyses). As a result, chronological trends and stylistic changes are outlined with regard to combs themselves and their relationship to the immediate environment of the propertiesthey originate from, as well as to broader contexts of the town quarters(Ends), Novgorod as a whole and, to a certain extent, to the complex of Northern European urban communities. The combs are used for gaining insights into the character and status of artisans through the analysis of aspects concerning the use of raw materials and application of specific techniques, and into the characterand status of consumers. It is demonstratedthat behind distribution patterns of particular comb types lie such important spheres as craft specialization, trade, the movement of commodities and shifts of fashion, reflecting the changing demands of the consumer's market. The comb study draws out some fundamental changesin the comb repertoire and the comb-making industry in its transition from the late Viking Age through the Middle Ages. It can also be seen against the background of the developmentof urban society and, as'such, becomes a valuable source for further comprehensiveanalysis of the character of life in medieval Novgorod, which involves assembling and correlating of relevant data

Fixed Points of g-Interpolative Ćirić–Reich–Rus-Type Contractions in b-Metric Spaces

We use interpolation to obtain a common fixed point result for a new type of Ćirić–Reich–Rus-type contraction mappings in metric space. We also introduce a new concept of g-interpolative Ćirić–Reich–Rus-type contractions in b-metric spaces, and we prove some fixed point results for such mappings. Our results extend and improve some results on the fixed point theory in the literature. We also give some examples to illustrate the given results

Рецензия на книгу: Raffensperger Ch. Reimagining Europe. Kievan Rus’ in the Medieval World, 988—1146 / Christian Raffensperger. — Сambridge (Massachusetts) ; London : Harvard University Press, 2012. — 329 p. (Harvard Historical Studies ; 177). The reviews of the book: Raffensperger Ch. Reimagining Europe. Kievan Rus’ in the Medieval World, 988—1146 / Christian Raffensperger. — Сambridge (Massachusetts) ; London : Harvard University Press, 2012. — 329 p. (Harvard Historical Studies ; 177). The author describes the concepts and contents of the work of a contemporary young American scholar studying the mediaeval history of Rus’. The article supports the main idea of the work in question, i.e. that at the time Kievan Rus’ was an integral part of Europe, which is proved by the similarity of the Russian and European social, ideological, and political systems after 988

This article analyzes the progress of Ukrainian historical science using the critical approach to the crucial points of Soviet historiography: the origins of separate East-Slavic nations and problems of Old Rus nationality as a heritage of Soviet party science. The author comes to a conclusion that Ukrainian nationality was formed in the early Middle Ages like other nationalities of European middle region. The foundation of Byelorussians and Russians began later (ІХ-ХІІ centuries) on the local Baltic and Finnish substance under the strong influence of Old Ukrainians from Dnipro region and Volyn. Modern ethnology doesn 't prove the existence of united Old Rus nationality. Socalled Old Rus nationality was a product of tendentious imperial approach to the history of East-Slavs

The author hypothesizes that the corpses of Bruno of Querfurt (+1009) and his companions were buried among the Rus‘, possibly in Svyatopolk’s city of Turov. Such burial and cult could have influenced both the placing of the tomb of Vladimir and decorations of the St. Sophia church
