    Performance Approximation and Design of Pick-and-Pass Order Picking Systems

    In this paper, we discuss an approximation method based on G/G/m queuing network modeling using Whitt’s (1983) queuing network analyzer to analyze pick-and-pass order picking systems. The objective of this approximation method is to provide an instrument for obtaining rapid performance estimates (such as order lead time and station utilization) of the order picking system. The pick-and-pass system is decomposed into conveyor pieces and pick stations. Conveyor pieces have a constant processing time, whereas the service times at a pick station depend on the number of order lines in the order to be picked at the station, the storage policy at the station, and the working methods. Our approximation method appears to be sufficiently accurate for practical purposes. It can be used to rapidly evaluate the effects of the storage methods in pick stations, the number of order pickers at stations, the size of pick stations, the arrival process of customer orders, and the impact of batching and splitting orders on system performance.simulation;warehousing;order picking;queuing network;pick-and-pass

    In many warehouses, customer orders are batched to profit from a reduction in the order picking effort. This reduction has to be offset against an increase in sorting effort. This paper studies the impact of the order batching policy on average customer order throughput time, in warehouses where the picking and sorting functions are executed separately by either a single operator or multiple parallel operators. We present a throughput time estimation model based on Whitt's queuing network approach, assuming that the number of order lines per customer order follows a discrete probability distribution and that the warehouse uses a random storage strategy. We show that the model is adequate in approximating the optimal pick batch size, minimizing average customer order throughput time. Next, we use the model to explore the different factors influencing optimal batch size, the optimal allocation of workers to picking and sorting, and the impact of different order picking strategies such as sort-while-pick (SWP) versus pick-and-sort (PAS)Order batching; Order picking and sorting; Queueing; Warehousing;

    A Structural Econometric Model of Consumer Demand at Pick-Your-Own Fruit Operations

    This paper develops a fully structural econometric consumer demand model for goods which have time and monetary costs, and where time spent obtaining the goods also enters into the utility function. The model is used to analyze customers' decision to buy pick-your-own versus pre-harvested fruit at North Carolina pick-your-own fruit operations. The empirical application distinguishes the double effect of time as a resource constraint and also providing utility. Elasticity estimates show that strawberries sold at pick-your-own operations are price elastic, with pick-your-own fruit being less price elastic than pre-harvested fruit.Consumer/Household Economics,

    Introduction: Niemann-Pick Disease (NPD) is a rare genetic condition, an autosomal recessive disorder, that can be identified by the acid sphingomyelinase deficiency, which leads to the buildup of sphingomyelin on lysosomes. The NPD is categorized into three main subclassifications: A, B, and C, each one with different clinical manifestations and phenotype variabilities. Case report: A 42-years-old male patient diagnosed in childhood with NPD-B under conditions of increased abdominal volume, medical follow-up was interrupted during pre-adolescence. In adulthood, the patient was referred to hepatology outpatient after gingivorrhagia, and epistaxis, it has been detected hepatosplenomegaly, portal hypertension, anemia, and thrombocytopenia. The medical records reviews showed a hepatic biopsy within anatomopathological results suggesting deposit disease and a myelogram within indication of foam cells, both examinations were performed during childhood. A chest tomography was performed, leading to the diagnosis of interstitial lung disease, although asymptomatic. The echocardiogram revealed a moderate to severe aortic stenosis, without clinical repercussions. On further investigation, it was detected sphingomyelinase deficiency (SMPD1), compatible with diagnoses of NPD type B. Discussion: NPD-B presents with significant phenotypic heterogeneity, which may include hepatosplenomegaly, portal hypertension, and hematologic involvement, leading to complications such as anemia and thrombocytopenia. Pulmonary involvement is common and manifests as interstitial lung disease. Primary cardiac involvement is not typical, but secondary complications may occasionally lead to cardiac manifestations. Conclusion: Early diagnosis and continuous follow-up are crucial for the proper management of Niemann-Pick Disease type B. The introduction of modified therapies, such as Olipudase alfa, brings significant hope for treatment. The reported experience highlights the need to increase awareness about the disease, improve early detection strategies, and ensure continuous monitoringIntrodução: A Doença de Niemann-Pick (DNP) é uma condição genética rara, autossômica recessiva, descrita pela deficiência da esfingomielinase ácida, levando ao acúmulo de esfingomielina nos lisossomos. A DNP é dividida em três subtipos principais: A, B e C, cada um com manifestações clínicas distintas e variabilidade fenotípica. Relato de caso: Paciente masculino de 42 anos diagnosticado com DNP tipo B na infância, a partir de investigação de quadro de aumento de volume abdominal, porém com interrupção do acompanhamento médico na pré-adolescência. Na idade adulta, foi encaminhado ao ambulatório de hepatologia devido episódios de gengivorragia e epistaxe, sendo constatada hepatoesplenomegalia, hipertensão portal, anemia e plaquetopenia. Revisão de prontuário mostrou biópsia hepática com resultado anatomopatológico sugestivo de doença de depósito e mielograma com achado de células espumosas, ambos exames realizados na infância. Submetido a tomografia de tórax, sendo diagnosticado com doença intersticial pulmonar, embora assintomático. Ecocardiograma evidenciou estenose aórtica moderada a grave, sem repercussões clínicas. Prosseguida investigação, detectou-se de deficiência de atividade de esfingomielinase (SMPD1), compatível com diagnóstico de DNP tipo B. Discussão: A DNP tipo B se apresenta com grande heterogeneidade fenotípica, podendo ter hepatoesplenomegalia, hipertensão portal e comprometimento hematológico, levando a complicações como anemia e plaquetopenia. O acometimento pulmonar é frequente e se manifesta como doença intersticial. Envolvimento cardíaco primário não é típico, mas complicações secundárias podem ocasionalmente levar a manifestações cardíacas. Conclusão: Diagnóstico precoce e o acompanhamento contínuo são fundamentais para o manejo adequado do DNP tipo B. A introdução de terapias modificadas, como a Olipudase alfa, traz esperanças significativas para o tratamento. A experiência relatada ressalta a necessidade de aumentar a conscientização sobre a doença, melhorar as estratégias de detecção precoce e de monitoramento contínuo

    The Niemann-Pick is an autosomal, recessive, rare and with a variable genomic imprinting disease. It involves three phenotypicalities (MNP-A, MNP-B, MNP-C) that differ by age of onset, symptoms and complexity of prognosis with a rather linear maintenance of symptoms. This chapter examines the psychological outcomes implied in the pathway of this disease. More specifically, it considers this pathway as potentially traumatizing and explores the emotional impact of a rare metabolic syndrome both at an individual and family level. Possible psychological consequences result from a complex interplay of negative emotions such as guilt, shame, helplessness, fear, anger in conjunction with patterns of resilience

Ci sono vari ambienti e rami nel mondo della robotica e, in particolare, noi tratteremo di un problema in questa tesi: il Pick & Place. Il Pick & Place coinsiste nel pensare e progettare a come dei robot possano spostare degli oggetti da un punto A ad un punto B, rispettando dei vincoli predeterminati come l’ordine della sequenza, posizione degli oggetti ecc.. Nella mia tesi presenterò il progetto sviluppato presso PFM, azienda che ha fornito gli strumenti per lo sviluppo: Un sistema software di gestione di robot Rockwell che effettuano operazioni di Pick & Place Il progetto è stato sviluppato e testato nel periodo di stage (7/8 mesi) in diverse fasi. La tesi è divisa in 3 parti: 1. Dialogo con l’azienda per capire come approcciarsi al caso di studio (nastro + contronastro con più robot che spostano oggetti dal primo al secondo nastro) 2. Sviluppo di un simulatore su MatLab per analizzare le prestazioni di diverse logiche di presa 3.     Adapting Robot Architecture for Pick and Place

    Pick and place robots are very popular in industry as they provide speedy and precise handling applications. They are especially practical in repetitive work as they can work long time with a faster and more accuracy motion than humans. Compared with serial manipulator, parallel robots have the advantages of high accuracy, high rigidity and high payload/inertia ratio, and thus more suitable for a pick and place application. In this thesis, a 5 DOF parallel robot designed for haptic application is approaching to achieve pick and place operation by improving its tracking speed and accuracy through inverse dynamic control. Pick and place robots have different performance criteria than haptic devices. One main difference is that they operate at higher speed and accuracy than haptic devices. Therefore the parallel robot is first calibrated by using mechanical constraint method to reduce the position error from kinematic computation. Inverse kinematic model based iteration method is used to find out real structure parameters after fabrication. Then an inverse dynamic model of the 5 DOF parallel robot is built up based on virtual work principle, which considers two situations and is able to be adapted dependent on whether an object is captured by grippers. Also, grasping force is setted by this model and therefore could be easily changed for different application by humans. A simmechanics model in matlab is used to compare with this numerical inverse dynamic model and proves its correctness. The inverse dynamic model provides feedforward compensation in high speed movement and reduces the tracking error than normal position control. In order to obtain higher stiffness in grasping performance while keeps fast response and low overshoot, a nonlinear control strategy is introduced to replace normal PID controller. Simulations and experiments are carried out to test tracking performance under dynamic control, the results show a limited error and a realization of pick and place operation finally.Precision and Microsystems EngineeringMechanical, Maritime and Materials Engineerin
