Introduction : migration and the European City
Looking back over the centuries, mobility and migration have always formed an important part of human existence. Given the multiplicity of push/pull factors and shifting constellations, the groups as well as trajectories involved in the movement of people can vary dramatically. It is worth remembering, for example, that regions like Europe – perceived as a preferred destination in the twenty-first century – provided large numbers of emigrants in the past, particularly during the high medieval crusades or global expansion and colonialization between the fifteenth and nineteenth centuries. In numbers, however, the migration of labor was to outweigh these groups by far; roughly, 60 million Europeans crossed the Atlantic to the Americas during the long nineteenth century in search of a new place of work
Catholicism decentralized : local religion in the early modern periphery
Expanding upon recent work on the heterogeneity of Catholicism and the challenges facing Tridentine reformers, this article examines local religion in two “extreme” settings: the village republic of Gersau in Central Switzerland and the missionary territory of the Custody of the Holy Land. Following conceptual remarks, the authors sketch the distinct secular contexts as well the phased evolution of localized networks for the administration of the cure of souls, the latter starting in the eleventh and sixteenth centuries, respectively. A consistently comparative approach reveals notable similarities—in terms of expanding spiritual provision and better record keeping—alongside substantial differences—especially between the clearly demarcated territorial parishes in the Alps and a more punctual system of sacrament centers in Palestine. At Gersau, where diocesan structures were weak, the church operated under the close supervision of a commune with extensive powers stretching to the rights of advowson and benefice administration. Around Jerusalem, the Franciscans—whose custos acted as the vicar apostolic—used material incentives to win over converts from other Christian denominations. Building on recent reassessments of the post-Tridentine Church, both examples thus underline the strong position of the laity in the confessional age and the need to acknowledge local sociopolitical as well as organizational factors in the formation of early modern Catholicism

The world of the tavern ::public houses in early modern Europe /
"The subject of drink received a great deal of attention from early modern Europeans. Preachers, physicians, authorities, artists and travellers all addressed it from a range of different perspectives. At the same time, inns, taverns and alehouses served as multifunctional centres in towns and villages throughout Europe. This combination resulted in a wealth of sources, both institutional and cultural, which are only now beginning to be explored. This anthology features new research on public houses in England, Russia and the German lands. In a series of general, thematic and regional studies, contributors engage with broader debates in early modern history, shedding light on such key issues as consumption, travel and communication, state building, confessional identity, fiscal practice, gender and household relations, and the use of public spaces. The result is a volume that should appeal to anybody with an interest in early modern cultural history."--Provided by publisher
All that divides us: poems
The poet's voice is clear, direct, yet artful. The sensibility that pervades these poems is that of a mature woman with an inquiring mind and a strong sense of family attachments. Almost every poem delivers a sidelong irony, a study in contrasts that is always overridden by the sense of common humanity shared by two disparate cultures.Foreword / Maxine Kumin -- Begin the Ceremony: Letter to Myself on My Birthday -- A Bridge to China -- To the Chinese People, Who See the Same Stars -- Strangers and Kin: Paper Flowers -- Nearly -- Meeting Our Chinese Cousins -- Two Women Leaving Beijing -- Immolation of a Stranger -- Hawthorns -- City of Dust and Water -- The Guest Chair at Nankai University -- Chinavision -- Storyteller -- In the Company of Magpies: Chinese Art & Culture Tour -- Sylvia Plath in China -- Ghost City -- The Truth About History -- How to Change a Country -- Yin and Yang -- Mr. Yuan's Two Joys -- Chinese Puzzle -- Full Moon Harvest Festival at the Spa City -- Peace Road Kindergarten -- Tiger Hill -- Vision at Tai-Shan Mountain -- Searching for Grace: Where It Hurts -- Deep Enough to Go Home -- Scarred Baggage -- Found Snapshot: The Year His Sister Left -- Remembering the Three Gorges -- The Rope -- Missing in China -- For Those Who Dream of Cranes
Preventing volumetric locking in the finite element method
Elementtimenetelmä on laajasti käytetty numeerinen menetelmä teknisessä analyysissä.
