    Limit analysis of masonry arches with unconventional stereotomy considering uncertain mechanical parameters

    The classical limit analysis of masonry arches provides a value of the collapse load without adequately considering the uncertainties related to the compressive strength of the material. With the aim of reflecting on this issue, this contribution, starting from deterministic investigations conducted by means of a multi-constrained funicular method based on the lower bound theorem of limit analysis, presents a simple but effective procedure for estimating the probability of failure for any given magnitude of the live load, which depends on the value of the friction coefficient, assuming uncertain compressive strength. The masonry arch is modelled as an assembly of voussoirs with any stereotomy; the compressive strength is described as a random variable with predetermined log-normal distributions. Iteratively utilizing the funicular approach while considering samples of the random variable mentioned above, a Monte Carlo study is carried out by considering a representative range of friction coefficient. The results are validated by means of a new version of the Durand-Claye method. In addition, the failure modes of masonry arches are explored

    Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed.     “Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

    Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

    We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature.     A non-linear FE model for the collapse behaviour of masonry domes: the case study of the dome of Anime Sante in L’Aquila

    This contribution describes non-linear finite element analyses conducted to investigate the collapse behavior of the ogival dome with oculus and lantern of the Anime Sante church in L’Aquila, Italy. This dome, damaged significantly by a catastrophic earthquake in 2009, has been the focus of numerous studies on its structural behavior. The non-linear model utilized in this study, developed usingAbaqus CAE software, aims to provide additional insights into the structural response, particularly focusing on the masonry that constitutes the dome. For this purpose, the dome is discretized into blocks and mortar joints. The mechanical behaviour of the mortar is described by means of a concrete damage plasticity model, with failure assumed to occur primarily at the interfaces between blocks. The preliminary analyses presented in this work consider gravitational loads, with an increasing vertical displacement applied at the crown to determine the collapse load. The resulting deformed shape of the dome and the location of plastic hinges are determined, alongside the study of collapse load through load-displacement diagrams. Furthermore, the results obtained from the finite element approach are compared with those derived from limit analysis methods. Specifically, novel versions of two classical approaches, grounded in the theoretical principles of lower and upper bound theorems, are referenced to assess the collapse load considering the strength ofmasonry. This comparative analysis serves to validate the numerical method employed in this study, enhancing confidence in the obtained results

    Breath of New Life for the Ruins of Villa Aprilia of Lancia Family in the Italian Alps (1800 m)

    Villa Gilodi, later Villa Aprilia, was built by architect Costantino Gilodi in the Belle Epoque style in 1906, equipped with heating, running water and electricity. Its position in the North-Western Alps at an elevation of 1824 m, in a hard-to-reach area, makes this construction unique. The villa was built using local stone masonry and sits on a leveled ground supported by massive embankments with buttresses. This location is rich in historical significance. After architect Gilodi passed away, the Lancia family, owners of the renowned car brand, acquired the villa. During World War II, the region where the villa sits was an escape route to Switzerland and battle ground between partisans and fascists. In 1944, the villa was set on fire and abandoned. The villa has been in a state of ruin ever since and is deteriorating progressively due to the harsh weather and lack of maintenance. Despite this, the masonry proved to be extremely durable over the decades. The architecture is still recognizable and the walls are standing tall, together with the portico. Fortunately, the municipality where it is located, Bannio Anzino, decided to buy the Villa to give it a new life, compatible with the enchanting natural theater in which it is inserted. The municipality is looking into carrying out a sustainable intervention reclassifying it for a new use.     Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

    We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more sophisticated methods

    We have done our best to complete the author checklist relating to the use of animals in the hut study. Note that the objective for the hut study was to evaluate the IRS treatment applications for residual efficacy against Anopheles mosquitoes, including the local An. coluzzii mosquito population. Cows were only used to attract mosquitoes into the huts and no tests were carried out directly on the cows. The author checklist is intended for use with studies where experiments are carried out on animals, which is why we have had such difficulty in completing this for the hut study, as many of the questions do not relate to how the cows were used
