    The dolor, ira and Vengeance Cycle in Paul the Deacon’s Historia Langobardorum

    This essay explores the role and meaning of the emotional term dolor in the scenarios of vengeance represented by the Lombard scholar Paul the Deacon (c.720–799) in his work Historia Langobardorum. First, after contextualising the work and analysing the concept of aristocratic honour and vengeance outlined by the author in the text, this essay examines the episodes in which dolor is associated with revenge. Second, starting from the work itself, the paper constructs the emotional script of dolor, namely the little scenario that a character plays out – as sequences of events, actions and social interactions – when he or she feels this emotion. Finally, it examines how the author evaluates dolor positively or negatively in relation to social and gender norms

    Gas6 anti-apoptotic signaling requires NF-kappa B activation

    The growth arrest-specific 6 gene product Gas6 is a growth and survival factor related to protein S. Gas6 is the ligand of Axl receptor tyrosine kinase; upon binding to its receptor Gas6 activates the phosphatidylinositol 3-OH kinase (PI3K) and its downstream targets S6K and Akt. Gas6 anti-apoptotic signaling was previously shown to require functional PI3K and Akt and to involve Bad phosphorylation in serum-starved NIH 3T3 cells. Here we demonstrate that Gas6 induces a rapid and transient increase in nuclear NF-κB binding activity coupled to transcription activation from NF-κB-responsive promoters and increase in Bcl-xL protein level. Gas6 survival function is impaired in cells lacking p65/RelA and in NIH 3T3 cells transfected with a dominant negative IκB, indicating that NF-κB activation plays a central role in promoting survival in this system. Moreover, NF-κB activation can be blocked by a dominant negative Akt and by wortmannin, an inhibitor of PI3K, thus suggesting that NF-κB activation is a downstream event with respect to PI3K and Akt, as already described for other growth factors. In addition, we show that glycogen synthase kinase 3, which is phosphorylated in response to Gas6, can physically associate with NFKB1/p105 in living cells and can phosphorylate it in vitro. Furthermore, Gas6 treatment is coupled to a decrease in p105 protein level. Altogether these data suggest the involvement of NF-κB and glycogen synthase kinase 3 in Gas6 anti-apoptotic signaling and unveil a possible link between these survival pathways

    The seismic risk in Istanbul: An innovative assessment method

    Over the last century, an unprecedented settlement expansion, generated by an exceptional world population growth, has made cities all around the world always more prone to disasters. Natural phenomena, such as earthquakes, could be potentially more dangerous when hit megalopolis and their neighborhoods particularly fragile. Amid the most important global cities, Istanbul is characterized by one of the highest levels of seismic risk. Within its territory, there are numerous highly vulnerable neighborhoods. Some of them are located around İstiklal Caddesi, famous pedestrian street, which is being visited by a great number of people (both Turkish city-users and international tourists) twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week. Part of the old and historical neighborhood of Pera/Galata, in the today's Beyoğlu Belediyesi, it is a highly attractive zone full of economic activities, acting as heart of the city. Since the importance of this area, its specific seismic risk has been assessed using two different approaches, one traditional and one proposed by the author, which have provided two different responses. The "standard method", based on generic variables applicable to the whole Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality, shows how this zone is not amongst the most risky area of the city. Whereas, "the experimental method", calibrated on more precise information and more specific variables typical of the case study area, demonstrates that the level of seismic risk is significant. Finally, a scheme of urban/district emergency evacuation system is here proposed indicating some shelter areas and classifying the streets, inside the case study area, according to their level of safety
