Vision Transformer Reliability Evaluation on the Coral Edge TPU

    No full text
Vision transformers (ViTs) outperform convolutional neural networks (CNNs) in tasks such as image classification, and, despite their high computational complexity, can still be mapped to low-power EdgeAI accelerators, such as the Coral Tensor Processing Unit (TPU). In this paper, through accelerated neutron beam experiments, we study the reliability of six ViTs on the Coral TPU and four micro-benchmarks. According to our data, the internal size of attention heads (the main computational block in ViTs) has negligible impact on the FIT rate of the model compared to increasing the number of heads in the model; furthermore, our results show that employing convolutions in the patch embedding reduces the FIT rate of the model. Additionally, we decompose ViT into four basic computational blocks which represent the main operators of the model, showing that, although the transformer layer (with multi-head self-attention and multi-layer perceptron) presents the highest FIT rate, it is actually the patch embedding that is more likely to cause misclassifications. These results can be leveraged to design hardening techniques that improve the resilience of the critical blocks of a ViT, identified in our evaluation, while minimizing the additional overhead

    No full text
The present work proposes a new model for pollutant dispersion in the atmosphere, this model was idealized in the dissertation work of the author and continued its development in this research. The model is based on the semi-analytic solution of the advectiondiffusion equation for continuous emission, with resolution through the method of separation of variables and the Fourier transform. The boundary conditions are treated as infinite reflections of the pollutant in the soil and at the top of the atmospheric boundary layer. These reflections are used in a partial way in the attempt to consider phenomena of dispersion that can not be explained in the deterministic model, so that the boundaries can be understood as stochastic, that is, one can interpret the boundaries as a sampling of a distribution. In addition, an optimization is performed in the partially reflective boundaries, with the purpose of developing an optimization methodology and determining the optimal values for the partial reflection. The results obtained were firstly compared with the experiments of Copenhagen and Hanford. Subsequently, the model was compared with concentration data collected at a cellulose production plant. The dispersion of pollutants emitted by a thermoelectric plant in Brazil was also simulated, which is part of the research and technological development program of the electric energy sector of the National Electric Energy Agency (ANEEL)

Large Deviations Approach for Stochastic Genetic Evolution

    No full text
Theoretical ecologists have long strived to explain how the persistence of populations depends on biotic and abiotic factors and have proposed various models to predict the long time behavior of biological populations. We are interested in modeling the effects of natural selection and adaptation in a bacterial population of Escherichia  coliEscherichia\; coli, one of the most intensively studied organisms on Earth. A distinctive signature of living systems is Darwinian evolution, that is, a tendency to generate as well as self-select individual diversity. Mathematical models built to describe this natural dynamics of populations must be rooted in the microscopic, stochastic description of discrete individuals characterized by one or several adaptive traits and interacting with each other. The simplest models assume asexual reproduction and haploid genetics, where an offspring usually inherits the trait values of her progenitor, except when a mutation causes the offspring to take a mutation step to new and different trait values and selection follows from ecological interactions among individuals. In this dissertation we borrow results from large deviation theory to predict the most likely evolutionary trajectories for genetic traits in a given bacterial population leading from known initial multi-species frequencies to terminal domination by mutants with highest fitness. To compute the most likely evolution path, we seek the trajectory with minimal large deviations cost among all genetic evolution trajectories. The goal thus reached is to compute the most likely evolutionary steps which brought an actually observed terminal overwhelming dominance by a new mutant.Mathematics, Department o

Calculated parenteral initial treatment of bacterial infections: Introduction and antibiotics

    No full text
This is the first chapter of the guideline "Calculated initial parenteral treatment of bacterial infections in adults - update 2018" in the 2nd updated version. The German guideline by the Paul-Ehrlich-Gesellschaft für Chemotherapie e.V. (PEG) has been translated to address an international audience. This guideline is a revision of the recommendations published in 2010, taking into account recent substances and studies. As with previous revisions, the current situation of pathogen resistance and the results of new clinical trials are considered. The results are the present recommendations for parenteral calculated initial therapy of bacterial infections in adults. If several treatment options are mentioned, they are not always equivalent in their spectrum of microbiological activity. Therapeutic alternatives offer the opportunity to consider pathogen epidemiology, to avoid antibiotic intolerances or to escalate or de-escalate treatment in a manner suited to the situation. This article describes the different therapy options.
