    When to regulate airports: A simple rule

    Landing fees at airports are regulated almost all over the world since airports are assumed to abuse their market power. We find that monopolistic airports have an incentive to restrain landing fees when they generate additional non-aviation revenues and that the optimal landing fee decreases in the degree of complementarity of aviation and non-aviation. Furthermore, we show that monopolistic airports will not have an incentive to abuse their market power anymore so that a price regulation becomes inappropriate as soon as non-aviation revenues increase above 50% of all airport revenues. --airport regulation,aviation and non-aviation revenues,complementarity of aviation and non-aviation,locational rents

    This paper studies whether in Pakistan the dynamic behavior of unemployment, inflation, budget deficit and real GDP growth is systematically affected by the timing of elections. We cover the period from 1973-2009. Our results can be summarized as follows: 1. Unemployment tends to be lower in pre-election periods and tends to increase immediately after elections, perhaps as a result of politically motivated employment schemes. 2. In ation tend to be lower in preelection periods, perhaps as a result of pre-electoral price regulation. 3. We find election year increases in the governmental budget deficit, financed by heavy government borrowings from the central bank and banking sector. 4.     Curative Potentials of Garlic (Allium sativum) Extract against Di-(2-Ethylhexyl) Phthalate Induced Reproductive Toxicity in Female Mice

    The present study was intended to find out the curative potentials of Garlic (Allium sativum) against di-(2-Ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP) induced toxicity in the reproductive system of female mice. Forty female mice were divided into four groups (n=10) as the (a) control group was given normal feed and drinking water, (b) aqueous garlic extract treated group (500 mg/kg), (c) DEHP group received 500 mg/kg in corn oil, and (d) DEHP + aqueous garlic extract each at a dosage of 500 mg/kg body weight. All treatments were given daily through oral gavage for 28 days. After completion of the experiment, all the animals were dissected through cervical dislocation to get reproductive organs. Collected organs were weighed and processed through the conventional histology technique of staining with eosin and hematoxylin. This study indicated that DEHP exposure caused a significant decrease (P<0.001) in body weight and weight of the complete female reproductive tract as compared to the control group, while the garlic co-administered group showed prominent improvement in body and organ weight when compared to only DEHP treatment. The adverse effect of DEHP on the histology of the ovary such as a decreased mean number of developing follicles, thin and irregular corona radiata, disruption of cumulus oophorus, and reduction in the size of the antral cavity of the tertiary follicle was observed. However, a significant recovery in the development of follicles was seen in DEHP plus garlic-treated group. DEHP plus garlic extract treatment showed protective effects on the uterus, such as a significant increase in the diameter of the uterus (P<0.001), muscularis, mean number of endometrial glands (P<0.001), and endometrial epithelial heights as compared to only DEHP exposed group.     The role of G-quadruplex structures of LIGS-generated aptamers R1.2 and R1.3 in IgM specific recognition

    Exploiting a variant of SELEX called "Ligand-Guided Selection" (LI-GS), we recently identified two novel truncated G-rich aptamers, called R1.2 and R1.3, specific for membrane-bound IgM (mIgM), the hallmark of B cells. Herein, the conformational behaviour of these aptamers has been analysed by multiple biophysical methods. In order to investigate their functional secondary structures, these studies have been carried out in pseudo-physiological buffers mimicking different cellular environments. Both aptamers proved to be highly polymorphic, folding into stable, unimolecular G-quadruplex structures in K+-rich buffers. In turn, in buffered solutions containing Na+/Mg2+ ions, R1.2 and R1.3 formed mainly duplex structures. Remarkably, these aptamers were able to effectively bind mIgM on B-cell lymphoma exclusively in the presence of potassium ions. These findings demonstrate the key role of G-quadruplex folding in the molecular recognition and efficient binding of R1.2 and R1.3 to mIgM expressed in lymphoma and leukemia cells, providing a precious rational basis for the design of effective aptamer-based biosensors potentially useful for the detection of cancer-relevant biomarkers

    Background: Healthcare workers are exposed to many occupational risks. Viral infections may be a common occurrence among nurses, including viral hepatitis B because they come into contact with the blood and body fluids of patients through exposure to a sharp instrument or in accidents and facilitate the transmission of blood-borne diseases. Objectives: To evaluate the knowledge of nurses in Baghdad Teaching Hospital about the prevention of viral hepatitis B and Find out the relationship between nurses' knowledge and demographic data. Method: A cross-sectional design study using a stratified random sampling method. 98 nurses working in Baghdad Teaching Hospital were included. Participants were randomly selected after obtaining verbal consent. A knowledge questionnaire on hepatitis B prevention was developed and distributed to relevant participants. The collected data were analyzed using SPSS version 23. Result: The study indicates that the nurses have a pass level of knowledge with a percentage of 54.1 % and no significant association between knowledge of preventive measures for HBV and their demographic characteristics. However, there are significant differences between education level and knowledge Conclusion: The results indicate that less than half of the sample had good information, and the majority of participants had acceptable information regarding measures to prevent HBV

    Big data reduction framework for value creation in sustainable enterprises

    Value creation is a major sustainability factor for enterprises, in addition to profit maximization and revenue generation. Modern enterprises collect big data from various inbound and outbound data sources. The inbound data sources handle data generated from the results of business operations, such as manufacturing, supply chain management, marketing, and human resource management, among others. Outbound data sources handle customer-generated data which are acquired directly or indirectly from customers, market analysis, surveys, product reviews, and transactional histories. However, cloud service utilization costs increase because of big data analytics and value creation activities for enterprises and customers. This article presents a novel concept of big data reduction at the customer end in which early data reduction operations are performed to achieve multiple objectives, such as a) lowering the service utilization cost, b) enhancing the trust between customers and enterprises, c) preserving privacy of customers, d) enabling secure data sharing, and e) delegating data sharing control to customers. We also propose a framework for early data reduction at customer end and present a business model for end-to-end data reduction in enterprise applications. The article further presents a business model canvas and maps the future application areas with its nine components. Finally, the article discusses the technology adoption challenges for value creation through big data reduction in enterprise applications
