<b>New trends in knowledge dissemination: TED Talks

    No full text
This paper investigates the key elements of ethos, pathos and logos linguistic strategies as some main features of TED (Technology, Entertainment, Design) Talks, popularizing speeches aiming at Knowledge Dissemination. Through a comparison between the TED Talk ‘HIV - How to fight an epidemic of bad laws’, by Shereen El-Feki (2012a), and another speech held by the same author at the  2012 Symposia The Global Commission on HIV and the Law, addressed to specialists, the paper analyses TED Talks as an innovative tool of popularization, which breaches the typical triangularisation ‘scientist-mediator-audience’, bringing scientists directly into contact with their audiences. Drawing upon Aristotle’s three pillars of rhetoric, the paper analyses the strategies used to establish the ethos of the speech, by proposing a topic as morally worth of spreading; pathos, by creating a direct contact with the public; and logos, investigated through an analysis of the elements used to recontextualise scientific discourses into popularized speeches. The analysis suggests that TED Talks are a recodification, not a mere translation of texts; they are a means to disseminate knowledge reducing the asymmetry between audiences and scientists

Estimation of probability of occurrence of F1 layer or L condition using tables and electron density profile models

    No full text
An algorithm is proposed for evaluation of the probability of occurrence of an F1 layer or L condition, based on tables. Observations independent of the tables database are used for comparison between the estimated probability of occurrence, the formulation used at present in IRI, and the occurrence actually observed. The importance of the inclusion of L condition in the electron density profile model is shown.Published2053-20563.9. Fisica della magnetosfera, ionosfera e meteorologia spazialeJCR Journalreserve

A Spiritual Reaction to Islamic Prosperity: The Power of Sorrow in Riccoldo da Monte di Croce’s "Letters to the Triumphant Church"

    No full text
This chapter tackles the argumentative strategies behind Riccoldo da Monte di Croce's "Epistole ad Ecclesiam Triumphantem" written in the aftermath of the Mamluk conquest of Saint John of Acre (1291), the last outpost of the Christian Kingdom of Jerusalem. I will linger on how the threatening presence of Muslims in the East allowed Riccoldo to develop a creative meditation on faith, a refined theological and rhetorical manifesto providing the author and his Christian readers with a spiritual shelter from the dramatic events taking place on earth. I am going to examine in particular Riccoldo’s experience of "sorrow"—one of the possible translations of the Latin word "tristicia"— by looking specifically at the ways in which he describes his faith in God. I will show how, on a rhetorical level, Riccoldo’s exegesis of the Book of Job through Gregory the Great turns out to be the exhortative backbone of the whole collection of his imaginary letters. Referring to Job, it has been claimed that the "Epistole" bear witness to the author’s spiritual crisis, particularly to his crisis of faith, as well as to his loss of certainty and hope in God’s plan—this implies an interpretation of the Book of Job in a deterministic, literalist and pessimistic fashion. I aim to challenge this interpretation of the "Epistole" as a desperate lament conceived by an author who finds himself incapable of escaping a fatalistic view of the present, realistically confused regarding God’s salvation plan and even suffering from agnosticism. I will demonstrate that by means of careful exegetical and rhetorical strategies, the "Epistole" instead provide substantial evidence of Riccoldo’s very faith vis-à-vis the general crisis surrounding him, shedding light on his expectations about the reaction of the Dominican Order—and the Western Church on a broader level—to the last stage of Islamic expansion

    L’herméneutique d’Yves Bonnefoy critique de lui-même

    No full text

Agile Technologies in Open Source Development

    No full text
This book approaches two contemporary topics in the field of software engineering that have had more than a significant impact in the way the modern software is being developed. Agile movement raised the role of experience and people in the centre stage having a profound impact on large and small software organizations alike. Research and practice have shown that agile is penetrating practically in all industrial domains including the globally operating, hardware-bound software development. Open source software development was considered to be outside of the scope of professional software development practice for long time. Companies perceived the voluntarily lead programming initiatives as something that could not be part of their strategic goal setting or daily practice. Today, a great majority of the companies utilize the open source solutions at many levels of the organization. The corporate strategies often include a plan where part of the software product has been opened for getting the benefits that are associated with the open source communities. There are many similarities in agile and open source movements. They have taken the field by surprise and gained a significant momentum that bear long lasting impact on the practice of software development. Both were initiated by a small group of practitioners. They are based on a value structure, which is far from the traditional technology orientation of many other software engineering innovations. Finally, the two approaches value people, collaboration, and excellence as the primary drivers of software development. This book shows you that open source and agile both deal with operational efficiency approaching it from different but mutually supporting angles. The authoring team has done a great job in highlighting the key differentiators and similarities of the two approaches. This book stands out from the others by presenting solid empirical evidence to support authors’ argumentation. Practitioners will find many suggestions and guidance, and they can also see the rationale behind these ideas, which further raises the value of this book

    No full text

    No full text
