Letter from Bishop E. Mulhern to Hagan
Holograph letter from Bishop E. Mulhern, Parochial House, Warrenpoint (County Down), in thanks for a rescript. Stating that [despite peace negotiations] he is 'on the run' and had to cancel Dr. O'Gorman's visit. Explaining that threatening letters from a certain anti-Sinn Fein body caused him to leave his retreat place, but that 'like Milo at Massilia' he is not worried; he may go to Magheracloone. After the event he wrote about, five murders occurred: when Mulhern demanded protection, an order was issued immediately to the 'D.I.' and the B-Specials were disarmed. Describing an amusing scene when the D.I. came late at night to inform Mulhern of the truce arranged by DeV.[alera] and Macready - the priests coming out with the bishop in night attire to act as a bodyguard should the need arise. 'The good news calmed us all.' All looks promising 'non obstante the camouflage of our Premier in Carsonia'. Also, the twelfth was 'a dull affair except in words'
Letter from Bishop E. Mulhern to Hagan
Holograph letter from Bishop E. Mulhern, Ardmaine, Newry (County Down), to Hagan, informing him of the sum collected for Peter's Pence, explaining it is less than usual and asking to hold over presentation until the occasion of the golden jubilee of their Confraternity of the Holy Family. Deploring the necessity for so many 'Latin letters'. Enclosing typescript letter signed by Mulhern for [the Pope], giving account of their financial situation, asking to declare their cathedral free from debt or else enable him otherwise to consecrate it. – Commenting on the 'rigmarole' regarding the cathedral, and [Gentile]'s involvement. Then observing that while they are at peace, there will be troubles as long as there are prisoners. It is not certain whether the cardinal's letter will help matters. Lord Londonderry promised to relieve clergy and religious of the oath of allegiance but nothing came of it. Mulhern takes the oath 'galling as it was. Otherwise we might close our Seminaries'. The grants are quite generous and would otherwise finance more 'Specials'. Commenting that 'the [general] election in England may be of momentous consequence as regards the Boundary question one way or the other. It might lead to a fusion of the North (and) South.' Comments on the intense cold. Then expressing confidence in Dr. Ryan who is starting off in Maynooth. Fr. [B.] is solely holding on still
Letter from Bishop E. Mulhern to Hagan
Holograph letter from Bishop E. Mulhern, Ardmaine, Newry (County Down), to (Hagan), following up on his telegram, explaining that he could not have done anything in a matter concerning an author of a book [on Ulster]. Recounting the experience of an explosion heard the previous night the cause of which is still unclear. Commenting that 'Raphoe is dragging a "lengthening chain"' after a prolonged investigation; that Dr. O'D[onnell] can now appoint parish priests but might not care to exercise the privilege since the main parishes are endowed

Letter from Bishop E. Mulhern to Hagan
Holograph letter from Bishop E. Mulhern, Ardmaine, Newry (County Down), to Hagan. Regretting that he, as the College, will not be granted a tax return. The situation in Ireland is deplorable the loss of life, and 'the wanton destruction of property and other rascally acts leave us up here without a word to say to the .....mists'. Enclosing a document that awaited him on returning (not extant). It has been confirmed now that Dr. MacRory was called to London to meet Churchill; he had expected an invitation for a meeting. There are welcome rumours that the B-Specials are to be [disbanded] before 15 August; this would be a good step towards 'peace of a kind in the (North East)'. The benefit of his holidays will soon be lost with the current sleepless nights

The psychometric performance of generic preference-based measures for patients with pressure ulcers
© 2015 Palfreyman and Mulhern. Background: Pressure ulcers are wounds that result from reduced mobility, and can have a significant impact on morbidity, mortality and quality of life. As pressure ulcers are a consequence of a wide range of conditions and interventions, it is unclear whether the best means of capturing the quality of life impacts is via generic or condition specific Patient Reported Outcome Measures (PROMs). The aim of this study was to investigate the psychometric performance of the generic EQ-5D and SF-6D amongst patients identified as having or being at risk of developing pressure ulceration. Methods: A survey of patients who were using pressure relieving mattresses and other equipment was undertaken within inpatient and community settings using a handheld tablet and postal survey. Data on EQ-5D-3L, SF-12 (used to calculate SF-6D), an EQ-5D dignity bolt-on question, demographic and wound specific questions were collected. Convergent validity was assessed using Spearman's correlations, and agreement using Bland-Altman plots. Known group validity was assessed by examining whether the instruments discriminated between different pressure ulcer severity groups. Multivariate linear regression was used to examine the impact of a range of pressure ulcer related variables. Results: The total number of participants was 307, including 273 from the acute setting (52% response rate) and 41 from the community (32%). SF-6D and EQ-5D were moderately correlated (0.61), suggesting that both instruments were capturing similar quality of life impacts. Both measures were able to significantly discriminate between groups based on the ulcer grade. Presence of a pressure ulcer and number of comorbidities were significant explanatory variables of EQ-5D and SF-6D score. Conclusions: The results suggest that generic PROMs can effectively capture the impact of pressure ulcers on quality of life, although there are significant challenges in collecting data from this group of patients related to poor clinical condition and mental capacity. The most effective method for obtaining survey data was through the hand held devices and interviewers
