Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Die Gründungsgeschichte des Kindergärtnerinnenseminars Amriswil (KSA) vor dem Hintergrund der politischen Landschaft der Schweiz: Vom „Fräuleinberuf“ zur Profession? Das Kindergärtnerinnenseminar Amriswil, 1975-2005
Mit der Einführung der Schulpflicht begann im Kanton Thurgau (TG) auch die Geschichte der Ausbildung von Lehrpersonen: Noch im selben Jahr, nämlich 1833, wurde durch den Kanton ein Lehrerseminar eröffnet, welches nach zweijähriger Ausbildungszeit zum Abschluss führte.1 Die Ausbildung von Kindergärtnerinnen blickt, wie auch der Kindergarten selbst auf eine deutlich kürzere Geschichte: Die ersten freiwilligen Kindergärten entstanden im Kanton TG in den 1960er und 70er Jahren, in vielen Dörfern aus privater Initiative. Mit dem zunehmenden Erfolg und der steigenden Anzahl der Kindergärten, stieg auch die Nachfrage nach Kindergartenlehrpersonen im Kanton, wobei zunächst noch ungeklärt war, wieweit für den Beruf der Kindergärtnerin tatsächlich eine Ausbildung nötig sei. Ein gutes Herz und Lebenserfahrung, so die verbreitete Überzeugung, würden schon ausreichen, um einen Kindergarten zu führen.2 Das (kantonale) öffentliche Interesse an der Ausbildung von Kindergartenlehrpersonen wurde in den Anfangsjahren des Kindergartens3 also gar noch nicht erkannt. Folglich gab es denn bis 1975 im ganzen Kanton TG keine Möglichkeit sich zur Kindergärtnerin ausbilden zu lassen. Die angehenden TG-Kindergärtnerinnen waren gezwungen ihre Ausbildung ausserkantonal zu absolvieren, wo sie hoffentlich einen der wenigen Ausbildungsplätze ergattern konnten – oder sie wagten den Berufseintritt ohne entsprechende Ausbildung.4 1975 schliesslich wurde das Kindergartenseminar Amriswil (KSA) ausgehend von einer privaten Initiative in Kooperation mit einer kommunalen Schulgemeinde, nämlich Amriswil, als Trägerin der Schule eröffnet. Mit viel Mut, Pragmatismus und grossem persönlichem Engagement sowie ausgeprägtem politischen Geschick, mitunter wohl auch einem gewissen Mass an Naivität, haben sich die Initianten in die Arbeit gestürzt. Innerhalb nur eines Jahres haben sie die kommunalrechtliche Grundlage für das KSA geschaffen, das Seminar von Grund auf geplant, organisiert und mit einer ersten Klasse à 24 Schülerinnen eröffnet.5 Zwei Jahre später bewilligte der Regierungsrat einen ersten Staatsbeitrag an das KSA. Und als 1978, im Abschlussjahrgang des ersten Ausbildungsgangs, mit dem Unterrichtsgesetz alle Schulgemeinden zum Führen eines Kindergartens verpflichtet wurden6, lag auf der Hand, dass der Kanton eine grössere Rolle übernehmen würde bei der Ausbildung von Kindergartenlehrpersonen. 1997 schliesslich, gut 20 Jahre nach der Seminargründung, übernahm der Kanton TG von der Schulgemeinde die Trägerschaft für das Kindergärtnerinnenseminar Amriswil. Bis der Kindergarten jedoch seine heutige anerkannte Position im Bildungssystem erlangte, sollte es noch bis zur Totalrevision des TG Volksschulgesetzes 2007 dauern. Seit damals gilt: „Der Kindergarten ist Teil der obligatorischen Schulzeit“.7 Verständlicherweise ist die Ausbildung zur Kindergartenlehrperson eng verzahnt mit der Entwicklung der Institution Kindergarten. Trotzdem mag die Gründungsgeschichte des KSAs im internationalen Vergleich und aus der zeitlichen Distanz erstaunen. Insbesondere vor dem Hintergrund der grossen Komplexität solcher Aufgaben. Im Rahmen der vorliegenden Bachelorarbeit wird die Gründungsgeschichte des KSAs aus politikwissenschaftlicher Perspektive analysiert. Die durch Recht, Tradition und Kultur festgelegten Institutionen (polity) der Schweiz zeichnen sich durch mehrere einzigartigen Merkmale aus. Ihrerseits wiederum prägen diese den politischen Prozess (politics) wie auch das politische Output (policy) tief. Das Ziel der Arbeit besteht darin zu erörtern, inwieweit das KSA mit seiner Geschichte repräsentativ ist für das politische System, bzw. die Bildungslandschaft der Schweiz. Anders gefragt, inwiefern hat gerade die politische Kultur der Schweiz diese Gründungsgeschichte und Entwicklung ermöglicht? Die Untersuchung des Kindergärtnerinnenseminars Amriswil bietet eine wertvolle Fallstudie, um die Einbettung des schweizerischen Bildungssystems im politischen System zu verstehen. So soll die Arbeit einen Beitrag zum Verständnis der Verknüpfung von Bildung und Politik im schweizerischen Kontext leisten, indem die Besonderheiten des schweizerischen Gemeinwesens verdeutlicht werden. Zunächst wird in einem ersten Schritt in Kapitel 2 in deskriptiver Weise auf die relevanten rechtlichen, politischen und kulturellen Rahmenbedingungen in der Schweiz eingegangen, wobei sowohl strukturelle als auch funktionelle Gesichtspunkte8 berücksichtigt werden. Daran anschliessend folgt die Erzählung der Gründungsgeschichte von 1974 bis zur Eröffnung des KSAs. Ein besonderes Augenmerk liegt dabei auf dem Zusammenspiel der privaten, kommunalen sowie kantonalen Akteure und deren Arbeitsweise. Die Gründungserzählung stützt sich auf einer juristischen Auslegung der relevanten historischen Rechtserlasse sowie Quellenarbeit, welche auf den Sitzungsprotokollen der Seminarkommission und Schulbehörden basiert (Kapitel 3). Ausgehend von den rechtlichen Gegebenheiten und der politischen Kultur wird in Kapitel 4 dargelegt, inwiefern diese die Gründungsgeschichte geprägt haben. Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts
We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued
use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more

We have done our best to complete the author checklist relating to the use of animals in the hut study. Note that the objective for the hut study was to evaluate the IRS treatment applications for residual efficacy against Anopheles mosquitoes, including the local An. coluzzii mosquito population. Cows were only used to attract mosquitoes into the huts and no tests were carried out directly on the cows. The author checklist is intended for use with studies where experiments are carried out on animals, which is why we have had such difficulty in completing this for the hut study, as many of the questions do not relate to how the cows were used
