Iwasawa Theory of Fine Selmer Groups
Get PDFIwasawa theory began as a Galois module theory of ideal class groups, initiated by Kenkichi Iwasawa as part of the theory of cyclotomic fields. In the early 1970s, Barry Mazur considered generalizations of Iwasawa theory to Selmer groups of elliptic curves (Abelian varieties in general). At the turn of this century, Coates and Sujatha initiated the study of a subgroup of the Selmer group of an elliptic curve called the fine Selmer group.
The focus of this thesis is to understand arithmetic properties of this subgroup. In particular, we understand the structure of fine Selmer groups and their growth patterns. We investigate a strong analogy between the growth of the p-rank of the fine Selmer group and the growth of the p-rank of the class groups. This is done in the classical Iwasawa theoretic setting of (multiple) Zp-extensions; but what is more striking is that this analogy can be extended to non-p-adic analytic extensions as well, where standard Iwasawa theoretic tools fail.
Coates and Sujatha proposed two conjectures on the structure of the fine Selmer groups. Conjecture A is viewed as a generalization of the classical Iwasawa μ=0 conjecture to the context of the motive associated to an elliptic curve; whereas Conjecture B is in the spirit of generalising Greenberg's pseudonullity conjecture to elliptic curves. We provide new evidence towards these two conjectures.Ph.D

Antioxidative Metabolism in the Seedlings of Pigeonpea in Response to Lead and Cadmium Stress
Get PDFEffects of Pb and Cd stress on antioxidative systems were studied in pigeonpea (Cajanus cajan (L.) Millspaugh) cultivars T21 and LRG30. The seeds were grown under different concentrations of Pb and Cd for 8-days and activities of enzymes including superoxide dismutase, peroxidase, catalase, glutathione reductase, malate dehydrogenase were assayed. In addition, quantitative estimations of ascorbic acid and glutathione were also carried out in control and Pb and Cd treatments of pigeonpea seedlings. The activities of antioxidative enzymes showed a marked increase in response to heavy metal stress. However the ascorbic acid and glutathione content were decreased by increasing heavy metal concentrations. No full textConcerns have been expressed about the small number of publications of field based accounting research in top ranking journals. The limited understanding of how to conduct high quality field based research in accounting has been noted as a contributing factor for both the low publication rate and the reluctance of researchers to undertake field-based research. This paper reports how field study method has been applied to address a research question in management accounting area. The paper describes the procedures that were
followed to collect and analyse data, and the measures taken to address
threats to validity and reliability of the study. The paper also discusses, in
hindsight, the ways in which the quality of the procedures adopted in the
study could have been improved. Those researchers who are interested in
applying field study method will particularly benefit from this paper as it
provides insights into the: (a) strengths, limitations and difficulties associated
with field study methods; (b) procedures that may be followed when using
field study methods to address a research question similar to the one discussed
in the paper; and (c) the pitfalls to be avoided and the factors that need
careful consideration when conducting field based research

No full textThe research paper aims at exploring the narrative aesthetics of Tamil science fiction in which the author takes twenty-first-century politics in India within the context of technological singularity. The article presents the political situation and totalitarianism in the age of technological singularity. The research focuses on the social impacts of artificial intelligence’s ability to read, learn, think, and act against its pre-programmed mechanism. A robotic dog struggles to restore a democratic political system from autocracy. The dystopian fictions “En Iniya Iyanthira” and “Meendum Jeeno” written by Sujatha Ranganathan depict the cognitive power of super intelligence behind a woman’s political actions to protect the people of India from exploitation, and corruption to create a better future. The paper demonstrates what a world without individual freedom looks like under the digital surveillance system of a totalitarian regime. The paper raises the question of what happens when a robot develops its rationality and mimics human behaviour. In these fictions, humans attempt to destroy the robotic dog. The robotic dog reaches a standard where nothing can destroy it. The paper explores the ways the robotic dog gains the knowledge to understand and practice the concept of humanity. The paper concludes with the post-humanistic conflicts between a woman and a robotic dog in emotional, ethical, and political aspects

Diagnostic and interactive uses of budgets and the moderating effect of strategic uncertainty / Sabrina Shi Qiong Shen and Sujatha Perera
Get PDFThe existing literature suggests that under certain environmental conditions control systems such as budgets can be effective only if they are used interactively. However, empirical evidence to support such a proposition is scant. This study examines the moderating effect of strategic uncertainty on the effectiveness of budgets when used as (a) a diagnostic control system; and (b) an interactive control system. In examining these relationships, the intervening role of individual motivation is also considered. Findings based on the data gathered from a questionnaire survey of large and medium size public sector organisations in Australia confirm that while diagnostic use of budgets is more effective in motivating individual performance under low strategic uncertainty, interactive use of budgets is more effective when strategic uncertainty is high. This study contributes to both the theory and practice

No full textBackground: Oral health is an integral part of general health. It is an essential component of health throughout the life of an individual. Certain systemic diseases can manifest in the oral cavity. Majority of the population approach medical practitioners for their oral health problems at primary health center level. Hence, general practitioners should have adequate knowledge about oral health and also they should play an active role in oral health promotion. Aim: The aim was to assess oral health awareness among undergraduate medical students in Davangere city. Materials and Methods: A cross-sectional survey was conducted using a self-structured, pre-tested, closed-ended questionnaire consisting of 25 questions with options on Likert scale. All the undergraduate students of JJM Medical college and SS Medical colleges were included for the survey. Questions were related to oral health problems and their relation with general health. The data was collected, compiled, and analyzed using Chi-square test. Results: Only 25% of the undergraduate students were found to have good oral health awareness, 38% were found to have fair and 37% were found to have poor oral health awareness. Final year undergraduate medical students were found to have better oral health awareness (40%), when compared to second (13%) and third year students (23%) (P < 0.001). Conclusions: Oral health awareness among undergraduate medical students was found to be poor. Final year undergraduate students were found to have better oral health awareness
