Visionary Art as Evolving Consciousness
Visionary art is art that is not confined by form, it argues that the artist who creates spiritual art allows the spirit to guide them, rather than relying on traditional form or technique. This can result in art that is incredibly unique and expressive, as it comes from a place of pure creativity and intuition. It also examines the visionary art of Alex Grey whose works offer a gateway into a different state of consciousness, where the viewer can access new insights and perspectives. In in a world that is becoming increasingly disconnected from the creative body, visionary art can be a source of hope and inspiration
Total and partial ovariohysterectomy in seven mares
Reasons for performing study: Ovariohysterectomy appears to have a low mortality rate in mares, but the procedure needs to be reviewed because of the high risk of life-threatening complications. Hypothesis: That ovariohysterectomy can be effective treatment for a variety of uterine diseases in mares and carries a good prognosis. Methods: Diagnosis, clinical data, surgical technique, post operative care, complications and outcome were recorded from medical records of 7 mares that underwent total (6) and partial (1) ovariohysterectomy at the University of Illinois from 1994 to 2001. Results: The indications for ovariohysterectomy were chronic pyometra (4 mares), chronic uterine torsion (n=2) and chronic intramural haematoma (n=1). Surgical exposure was difficult but was improved by traction on stay sutures and right-angled clamps. In some cases, application of the TA-90 autosuture instrument as a right-angled clamp to the caudal part of the uterus improved access to the uterine stump. The most common post operative complications were decreased faecal output, decreased intestinal sounds (4 mares) and mild abdominal pain (2). Two mares had mild to moderate incisional infections. Other previously reported complications, such as haemorrhage, septic peritonitis, uterine stump infection or necrosis, and diarrhoea, did not occur. All mares survived over follow-up periods of 6 months to 5 years and were used for riding (6 mares) and embryo transfer (1 mare, after partial ovariohysterectomy). Conclusions and potential relevance: According to this study, the prognosis for mares after ovariohysterectomy appears to be good, despite the technical difficulties of the procedure. The prevalence of life-threatening complications can be lower than reported.ID: 7088; Accession Number: 20043001502. Publication Type: Journal Article. Language: English. Number of References: 9 ref. Reproductive performance of Friesian mares after retained placenta and manual removal of the placenta
Because the incidence of retained placenta in Friesian mares is estimated to be high, and no reports have been published on the reproductive performance of Friesian mares after retained placenta, we studied postpartum reproductive performance in Friesian brood mares with (n = 54) and without (n = 50) retained placenta. We defined a retained placenta as the failure to expel all fetal membranes within 3 h after the delivery of a foal. We subdivided the group of mares with retained placenta into mares in which the placenta had been removed manually (n = 30) and mares in which it had not (n = 24). Within each group, we compared reproductive performance after breeding in the foal heat and breeding in a subsequent heat. We also recorded the age of the mares, number of mares treated with antibiotics after insemination, and number of mares treated with prostaglandins. The interval between delivery and conception, efficacy rate (number of served cycles divided by the number of mares that had a positive pregnancy diagnosis), seasonal pregnancy rate, pregnancy rate after first insemination, pregnancy loss rate, and foaling rate did not differ between mares with and without retained placenta or between mares with and without manual removal of the retained placenta. Within each group, the pregnancy rate after first insemination did not differ between breeding for the first time in the foal heat and breeding for the first time in a subsequent heat. We concluded that reproductive performance did not differ between (1) Friesian mares with and without retained placenta and (2) Friesian mares with and without manual removal of the placenta. With regard to reproductive performance, retained placenta and manual removal of the placenta are not valid reasons to avoid foal heat breeding in Friesian mares.LR: 20031114; PUBM: Print; JID: 0421510; 0 (Anti-Bacterial Agents); 0 (Prostaglandins); ppublishSource type: Electronic(1
Scanning electron microscopy of the endometrium of mares infused with gentamicin
Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) was used to study the endometrium of nine 1-year-old thoroughbred mares after twice intrauterine infusions of gentamicin, on 2 consecutive days. Five mares were infused on 2 consecutive days with 40 ml gentamicin (50 mg/ml) mixed with 80 ml of normal saline. Four mares served as controls and were infused with 120 ml of saline on 2 consecutive days. Endometrial biopsies were obtained from all mares 3 days after the second intrauterine infusion. Each biopsy was processed for SEM by standard methods. The endometrial epithelium of the gentamicin-infused mares had more cellular perforations than the saline-infused mares. The gentamicin-infused mares had less and shorter microvilli. The ciliated cells were fewer and some ciliated cells had disrupted and some had drooping cilia. The endometrial epithelium of the gentamicin-infused mares had a considerable number of endometrial cells that lost their luminal surfaces and some that lost their microvilli, compared to the saline-infused mares. We suggest that the information gathered in this pilot study should be used as basis for further investigation, on a larger scale basis, of the effects of repeated intrauterine infusion of gentamicin on the endometrial mucosa of mares.PUBM: Print; JID: 9712707; 0 (Anti-Bacterial Agents); 0 (Gentamicins); 2001/07/13 [received]; ppublishSource type: Electronic(1

Effect of copper supplementation on copper status of pregnant mares and foals
Pregnant Thoroughbred mares (n=21) were grazed on tall fescue pasture containing Cu 4.4-8.6 mg/kg DM. Twelve mares were supplemented daily with Cu 0.5 mg/kg liveweight (LW) as copper sulphate for the final 13-25 weeks of gestation. Plasma Cu declined during the third trimester for all mares and was not affected by Cu supplementation. Liver Cu concentration of mares and foals was estimated when foals were 4-10 days old. Cu supplementation of mares tended to increase mare liver Cu level and also foal liver Cu (P<0.01). There was a significant relationship between mare and foal liver Cu level (P<0.001, r² = 0.7). It is concluded that increasing the Cu intake of mares is effective in enhancing the Cu status of foals.ID: 699; Accession Number: 19981409815. Publication Type: Journal Article. Language: English. Termination of midterm pregnancy in mares using intra-allantoic dexamethasone
Elective termination of midterm pregnancy was successful in four mares using a single intra-allantoic infusion of dexamethasone solution. Duration of gestation in the experimental animals ranged from 167 to 174 days. All mares responded within 72 h, with a mean of 53.5 h from treatment to abortion. Fetal death occurred in utero probably 24 h before abortion. All mares exhibited oestrus by day 16 post treatment and were bred, with three mares conceiving at this oestrus..RE: 14 ref.; RN: 50-02-2; 55812-90-3; 2265-67-7; 1879-72-7; 312-93-6; 1926-94-9; 16978-57-7; 2392-39-4; 7743-96-6; SC: VE; CA; 0I; ZA; 0VSource type: Electronic(1) http://upei-resolver.asin-risa.ca?sid=SP:CABI&id=pmid:&id=&issn=0093-691X&isbn=&volume=29&issue=6&spage=1261&pages=1261-1267&date=1988&title=Theriogenology%20&atitle=Termination%20of%20midterm%20pregnancy%20in%20mares%20using%20intra-allantoic%20dexamethasone.&aulast=Wichtel&pid=%3Cauthor%3EWichtel%2c%20J%20J%3bEvans%2c%20L%20E%3bClark%2c%20T%20L%3C%2Fauthor%3E%3CAN%3E19892284756%3C%2FAN%3E%3CDT%3EJournal%20article%3C%2FDT%3
Retained placenta in Friesian mares: incidence, risk factors, therapy, and consequences
This study concerns incidence, risk factors, therapy and consequences of retained placenta after normal foalings in Friesian mares. Retained placenta was defined as failure to expel all fetal membranes within 3 hours after the delivery of the foal. Incidence of retained placenta was studied in 495 parturitions. As possible risk factors for retained placenta, serum calcium, magnesium (n=155), and vitamin-E concentrations, and glutathion peroxidase activity in blood (n=99) were determined within 12 hours post partum and compared between mares with and without retained placenta. Age of the mare, sex of the foal, gestational length and recurrence of retained placenta were recorded and also compared between mares with and without retained placenta. As therapy, the relative effectiveness of intra venous administration of oxytocin in saline solution (n=59) and of oxytocin in a Ca-Mg-borogluconate solution (n=53) was studied. Parameters for post partum reproductive performance were compared between mares with (n=54) and without retained placenta (n=50), and within the group of mares with retained placenta, of mares from which the fetal membranes had been removed manually (n=30) and from which it was not (n=24). Incidence of retained placenta in Friesian mares was 54%. Mares which retained the placenta had lower serum calcium concentrations within 12 hours post partum than mares without retained placenta (P<0.05), whereas mean serum magnesium and vitamin-E concentrations, and glutathion peroxidase activity in blood showed no difference. Age of the mare, sex of the foal and gestational length were not different between mares with and without retained placenta. Mares which had retained the placenta after previous foalings, had a 2.9-fold increase of retained placenta. Sixty four percent of the mares treated with oxytocin in Ca-Mg-borogluconate solution responded positively to the treatment, compared to 44% of the mares treated with oxytocin in saline solution (P<0.05). Post partum reproductive performance did not differ between mares with and without retained placenta, and of the mares with retained placenta, between mares with and without manual removal of the placenta..CF: 3rd International Conference on Equine Reproductive Medicine, Leipzig, Germany, 27-28 October 2001.; RE: 17 ref.; RN: 7440-70-2; 70-18-8; 7439-95-4; 50-56-6; 1406-18-4; SC: 0V; 0A; 0I; ZA; VE; CA; BESource type: Electronic(1) http://upei-resolver.asin-risa.ca?sid=SP:CABI&id=pmid:&id=&issn=0177-7726&isbn=&volume=17&issue=6&spage=619&pages=619-622&date=2001&title=Pferdeheilkunde%20&atitle=Retained%20placenta%20in%20Friesian%20mares%3a%20incidence%2c%20risk%20factors%2c%20therapy%2c%20and%20consequences.&aulast=Sevinga&pid=%3Cauthor%3ESevinga%2c%20M%3bBarkema%2c%20H%20W%3bHesselink%2c%20J%20W%3C%2Fauthor%3E%3CAN%3E20013159262%3C%2FAN%3E%3CDT%3EJournal%20article%3bConference%20paper%3C%2FDT%3
