‘He Sang the Story’ Narrative and Poetic Identity in Keats’s Work

    No full text
Story-telling is a mode central to the practice and achievement of John Keats. In ‘Sleep and Poetry’, he refers to life as ‘The reading of an ever-changing tale’. This line suggests his sense of the centrality of narrative to human experiences. Yet the Keatsian narrative is as a medium for Keats to investigate the nature and development of his poetic identity. His idea of poetry and of the poet, and his narrative figuring of himself as a poet are my subject, as they are his, when in the phrase the thesis takes for its title Keats writes of a poet in Endymion, ‘He sang the story up into the air’ (II, 838). Recent scholarship has interpreted Keats’s narrative techniques in different ways. Critical approaches have modified the Bloomian concept of the anxiety of influence by using a reader response approach, or have taken on board or swerved from a McGannian New Historicist perspective. In the process Keats’s formal achievement, once celebrated by critics such as Walter Jackson Bate and Helen Vendler, has received comparatively little attention. This thesis, adopting ideas and approaches associated with narratology (including its application to lyric poetry), analyses Keats’s poetic career, focusing on the poetry’s narrative techniques and its treatment of the narrator’s role. My approach might be described as aiming to accomplish a ‘poetics of attention’. This thesis consists of eight chapters. Chapter one discusses ‘I stood tip-toe upon a little hill’ and ‘Sleep and Poetry’, poems that are crucial in understanding Keats’s use of narrative to explore his poetic identity. In chapter two, concentrating on Endymion’s enactment of imaginative struggle, I attempt to show the purposeful function of the poem’s ‘wandering’ and complex narrative structure, which allows Keats space to develop and examine his beliefs about mythology, beauty, and visionary quest. Chapters three and four examine narrative techniques and the narrator’s role in ‘Isabella; or, The Pot of Basil’ and ‘The Eve of St. Agnes’ as Keats questions the nature and function of ‘old Romance’, even as he employs it, thus bringing a modern self-consciousness to bear on his task. Chapters five and six are devoted to the narrativity shown in the odes. Such an exploration of the ‘lyric narrative’ seeks to shed new light on our understanding of Keats’s odes. Chapter seven considers the ambivalence that Keats creates in ‘Lamia’. Lamia’s enigmatic identity as a woman and a serpent makes the narrative complex and the narrator perplexed. Chapter eight analyses ‘Hyperion: A Fragment’ and ‘The Fall of Hyperion: A Dream’, arguing that Keats uses these two poems as narratives to explore his idea of poetry and of the poet. In his short creative life, Keats demonstrates different and various narrative skills. These narrative skills shape his ideas and ideals of poetry as well as of the poet. Via his use of narrative, we are able to see the evolution of his poetic identity. He presents himself as what he recommended a poet should be, a shape-changing figure, who might be best described as a ‘camelion Poet’

The principal aim of our thesis is to assess the impact of national program of upgrading on the competitiveness of Algerian Enterprises which have adopted and finalized this kind of program. To do this, we have applied two approaches in order to evaluate the impact of the upgrading; it is the univariate and multivariate approach. In the first approach, we have utilized three methods, namely: parametric test of Student and the nonparametric test of Wilcoxon, in addition a simple regression model. While the second approach apply a multiple regression model. Besides, the empirical analysis involves panel data of a sample of 67 Algerian enterprises observed during the period 1997 to 2008. Our thesis is composed of four chapters. The first chapter aims to introduce the theoretical sub-foundation useful for understanding the competitiveness while the upgrade strategies are stated in the second chapter. The third chapter presents upgrading strategies adopted in Algeria, and finally the last and fourth chapter presents the methodology and the results of the empirical evaluation of the upgrade program of the competitiveness of Algerian Enterprises

Corporate Social Responsibility Practices during COVID-19 Crisis: a Critical Review

    No full text
Purpose: This article aims to identify CSR activities undertaken by companies during Covid-19 in terms of environmental, social, and economic dimensions as well as the responsibility toward employees and customers, using a “systematic literature review method” in order to outline the perceived challenges in terms of companies’ organizational practices. Findings: This study shows that the Covid-19 pandemic has forced a redefinition of the norms of social responsibility and created significant challenges to companies that required difficult decisions to be made regarding the safety of employees, the economic viability of the company, and its dedication to CSR efforts. Materially, the pandemic directs researchers towards different ways of conceptualizing CSR, yet the existing literature on CSR and the Covid-19 pandemic has focused on the social responsibility without taking into account the challenges faced by companies during this transition in terms of companies’ organizational practices. Theoretical Implications: This study provides a comprehensive framework of CSR practices in times of the crisis and underlines the changes in companies’ organizational practices in order to implement a sustainable business model not only to tackle this ongoing crisis but also to resist future crises by balancing economic performance and social responsibility. Practical Implications: The article reflects the importance of delimitating the major factors that help companies overcome new challenges such as resilience, supply chains, public health and corporate responsibility at a new juncture. Originality/Value: The relevance of this study is the discussion of CSR during the Covid-19 pandemic and its Impact on the organizational practices that have been changed and which should exist to ensure future effective CSR practices. Research Limitations/Future Research: As in all studies, this research has some limitations. The most important one is that it addresses the topic by referring to a defined literature base. It would be more useful for future comparative research to use other literature bases to assess the robustness of our results. In addition, this paper offers important implications for future empirical researches in order to investigate the impact of each factor highlighted in our study and to explore how CSR can help to address challenges such as public health, supply chains, corporate governance, and corporate responsibility at a new juncture. Purpose: This research work attempts to identify the determining factors of Koléa university campus generation Z students' entrepreneurial intention. Design/Method/Approach: The applied research method is a quantitative approach in which a sample of 93 responses were analyzed using two software tools, IBM SPSS 25 and smartPLS4, and by adopting Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) and Partial Least Squares (PLS-SEM) for analysis and estimation. Findings: Results showed a significant and positive impact of subjective norms on the entrepreneurial intention of the study sample. However, entrepreneurial training, attitude towards entrepreneurship and perceived behavioral control had no impact on the entrepreneurial intentions of these students. thus, these findings led to validate the first hypothesis and reject the other three. Theoretical Implications: This study contributes to the extent literature on generation Z students' entrepreneurial intention in an Algerian context by highlighting the importance of subjective norms in fostering this intention. Practical Implications: Algerian universities should improve and pay more attention to entrepreneurial education and trainings they offer to their students in order to incite them to create their own business using adequate methods. Originality/Value: Understanding the characteristics and needs of Z generation students is important for universities and businesses. knowing what stimulates the generation Z entrepreneurial intention is both interesting and primordial. This information will enable universities to qualify, evaluate, and improve their entrepreneurial training programs. Also, such study in the Algerian context is scarce and still not common. Research Limitations/Future Research: Like many research studies, this study presents limitations, including those related to the size of the sample and the fact that it focuses on only Koléa university students. Hence, it is preferred to conduct further researches on the factors influencing entrepreneurial intention among Generation Z students belonging to various Algerian universities and conclude through generalizing the findings. Also, a longitudinal study would be a great way to track this intention and identifying the other factors that led and pushed some students to take the action and create their own business. Therefore, it is desirable to conduct more studies on the variables impacting entrepreneurial intention among Generation Z students enrolled in different Algerian institutions and to draw conclusions by extrapolating the results.
