Image management in presidential speeches: J. M. Aznar and J. L. Rodríguez Zapatero

The following article situates itself within the field of political discourse analysis. It deals with the State of the Union Speeches of two former Spanish presidents, J. M. Aznar (2001, 2002, 2003) and J. L. Rodríguez Zapatero (2005, 2006, 2007, 2009, 2010, 2011). Our analysis focuses on monologic speech acts containing verbs in 1st person sg. and pl., which, despite the formal and little spontaneous character of these speeches, can be found on utterance level as well as on discourse level. Modality plays an important role in our analysis, since it allows for a deeper insight in the communicative strategies involved. Based on Spencer-Oatey’s model of autonomy and affiliation in discourse, special interest is paid to how these rhetorical strategies contribute to the discursive construction of speakers’ face, which can be considered to be the most relevant concern of political discourse

This article shows the first results of a research project that attempts to analyse the relations between the business groups, the institutional framework and the economic development in 20th century Spain. It employs a microeconomic perspective, a historical-institutional analysis and private archival sources. The article focuses on the businesses of the Aznar family from 1937 (when they took over the management of the firms that formerly belonged to the Sota and Aznar group) to 1983 (when Naviera Aznar, the most important firm of the group, broke out and ceased business). Out of this empirical evidence, the article tries to underline the consequences that an industrial organization based on business groups and on an institutional framework characterized by the State's extreme interventionism and discretionality had on the capabilities and the competitiveness of Spanish firms and industries, and, by extension, on the economic development of Spain during the Franco's regime and the first Governments of the transition to democracy.Publicad

Differential Acquisition of m-Sequences using Recursive Soft Sequential Estimation

    No full text
In this contribution a novel sequential estimation method is proposed for the acquisition of mm-sequences. This sequential estimation method exploits the principle of iterative soft-in-soft-out (SISO) decoding for enhancing the acquisition performance, and that of differential pre-processing for the sake of achieving an enhanced acquisition performance, when communicating over various communication environments. Hence the advocated acquisition arrangement is referred to as the Differential Recursive Soft Sequential Estimation (DRSSE) acquisition scheme. The DRSSE acquisition scheme exhibits a low complexity, which is similar to that of an mm-sequence generator, while achieving an acquisition time that is linearly dependent on the number of stages in the mm-sequence generator. A low acquisition time is achieved with the advent of the property that the proposed DRSSE scheme is capable of determining the real-time reliabilities associated with the decision concerning a set of, say SS, consecutive chips. This set of consecutive chips constitutes the sufficient initial condition for enabling the local mm-sequence generator to produce a synchronized local despreading mm-sequence replica. Owing to these attractive characteristics, the DRSSE acquisition scheme constitutes a promising initial synchronization scheme for acquisition of long mm-sequences, when communicating over various propagation environments

∑_(l+m=k,l,m≥0) ((α+l-1)¦l) ((β+m-1)¦m)=((α+β+k-1)¦k) and its application to negative binomial distribution

We prove here the following equation: ∑_(l+m=k,l,m≥0) ((α+l-1)¦l) ((β+m-1)¦m)=((α+β+k-1)¦k) and give its application to prove the reproductive property of the negative binomial distribution. These finite sum equation involving binomial coefficients and proof of the reproductive property are not known as far as the author knows.論文(Article)departmental bulletin pape
