Recognition and introduction of "Al-Zorvatalsama Fimashahir al-asma", a new essay by Afzal Kermani

    No full text
In one of the preserved manuscripts in Ayatollah Mareshinkavi's library there is a treatise entitled "Al-Zoroahmasma Fae Mobiri-al-Masma" (Zat al-Sharma al-Shama ...), which is a synopsis of Ali Sami's famous book, Ali al-Sayyid Aliyev, Abolfazl Fieldi Neishabour. The author's name is not specified in the text, but the cataloger of his library introduces "Afzal al-Din Tajjulzman [Kermani]" and considers the compilation date "probably the eighth century". This guess is the result of neglected readings by the cataloger, and such a person does not exist externally. In this paper, it is noted that the time of the time is referred to the possibility of the immediate victimization of Afzal al-Din Kermani, the poet and the sixth and seventh-century astronomers, and the author of the book, Paḥabeqd al-Ali Lalmukhfal al-Ali. In the continuation of the article and after the introduction of the article, the subject is divided into different parts, and the differences with the al-Sa'ayyami are discussed. At the end of the table is the difference between some Persian equivalents in field works and Afzal Kermani. Key words: al-Zoroahmasma fi Muhammadi al-Masma, Taj el-Zaman kermani, Afzal al-Din kermani, al-Sami fi al-saṁmi

A potent thromboxane formation inhibitor in green tea leaves

A ninhydrin positive compound (L2) now identified as 2-amino-5-(N-ethylcarboxyamido)-pentanoic acid, from unprocessed tea leaves was a potent inhibitor of thrombin-stimulated thromboxane formation in rabbit whole blood (Ali and Afzal; Prostaglandins, Leukotrienes and Medicine, 27: 9, 1987). In the present study, processed and unprocessed tea leaf extracts were given to rats to consume for a period of eight weeks. Cholesterol and thromboxane levels were measured in the serum obtained from clotting the blood at 37 degrees C. A significant reduction in thromboxane levels was observed in rats taking unprocessed tea extract. This reduction was equally distributed in adult as well as in juvenile rats. However no appreciable changes in the levels of thromboxane were noticed in the serum of rats taking processed tea extracts. This might be due to the presence of a labile component which is destroyed during the processing of green tea leaves. A decreased level of cholesterol was observed in rats consuming unprocessed tea extract. This decrease could be linked to the decrease in thromboxane levels as observed. Processed tea refers to commercially available tea of different brands while unprocessed tea refers to dried green tea leaves.LR: 20061115; PUBM: Print; JID: 8802730; 0 (Amino Acids); 108589-72-6 (2-amino-5-(N-ethylcarboxyamido)pentanoic acid); 54397-85-2 (Thromboxane B2); 57-88-5 (Cholesterol); ppublishSource type: Electronic(1

    No full text
Recently, many high schools and universities have promoted community service learning program by making it part of the admission process; therefore, students participate in community service learning program to get admission in an institution of their choice. Moreover, after completing the community service program, they see themselves as more socially responsible citizens. This qualitative study aimed to explore the impact of community service learning on the social skills of students. The study employed a qualitative method by randomly selecting twenty five male and female students for focused group interviews from five different O- level schools situated in a middle socio-economic locality. The results revealed that community service learning program has a positive impact on the social skills of O-level students. Besides, students had also a positive learning experience. The findings of the study indicated that the awareness to encourage community service in schools is grounded on the acceptance that it does not only give students extra credit points, but serving others or one’s own community also makes them better citizens. Based on the advantages and positive experiences of students, the study recommends to include a more inclusive model of service learning in school curriculum

Intravascular Shockwave Lithotripsy for the Treatment of Severe Peripheral Arterial Disease: A Single-Centre Experience

    No full text
Background Chronic limb-threatening ischemia (CLTI) is the most severe manifestation of peripheral arterial disease. Various revascularization techniques are employed to treat peripheral arterial disease. Intravascular shockwave lithotripsy (IVL) is a relatively new procedure for the treatment of calcific lower limb peripheral arterial diseases (PAD). Objectives To assess the effectiveness and safety of shockwave lithotripsy in patients with severe PAD through an evaluation of limb salvage rate and patient survival. Methods A retrospective study of all patients treated with shockwave lithotripsy between November 2019 and June 2024 was performed. The primary outcome was amputation-free survival and secondary outcomes were potential complications of IVL (thrombo-embolization, perforation, and restenosis). Patients were followed up in the clinic and assessed both clinically and with a duplex scan at three months. Results A total of 38 patients were included in the study. The median age was 71 years; 28 were males. Among the patients, 28 (73.68%) were diabetic, 4 patients (10.53%) were current smokers, 10 patients (26.32%) were ex-smokers, and 24 patients (63.16%) were non-smokers. According to the Rutherford classification of PAD, 33 of the 38 patients were in stages 4-6. Only five patients were stage 3. Total number of treated arteries was 47. Treated lesions were 49% in the superficial femoral artery (SFA), 36% in the popliteal artery, 8% in the common femoral artery (CFA), 4% received treatment of the iliac arteries, and 2% of the posterior tibial artery. All treated arteries showed improved angiographic results. Four patients (10.53%) developed distal embolization. No perforation was recorded, and no significant flow-limiting dissection was recorded to require treatment. At the three-month follow-up, imaging revealed improvement in 58% of patients while 5% showed no improvement. Notably, follow-up imaging was not conducted in 37% of patients due to evident clinical improvement such as ulcer healing, palpable pulses, and the presence of Doppler signals. Seven patients required reintervention within three months after the initial IVL operation and 4 patients got revascularized after this period resulting in 11 patients requiring revascularisation after the initial operation. Amputation-free survival was 79% (30 patients). Conclusion Shockwave lithotripsy is associated with a high limb salvage rate and low complication rate. Further research is needed into long-term effectiveness and the role of shockwave treatment as an adjuvant to traditional revascularization techniques of patients with CLTI and short-distance claudicants. This is an open access article distributed under the terms of the Creative Commons Attribution License CC-BY 4.0., which permits unrestricted use, distribution, and reproduction in any medium, provided the original author and source are credited.RDUH staff can access the full-text of this article by clicking on the 'Additional Link' above and logging in with NHS OpenAthens if prompted

Two Sides of the Same Rupee? Comparing Demand for Microcredit and Microsaving in a Framed Field Experiment in Rural Pakistan

    No full text
We use a field experiment to test whether saving and borrowing satisfy demand for lump-sum accumulation from regular deposits. Inspired by ROSCAs, we offer different credit and saving contracts to subjects. We find that individuals often accept both credit and saving contract across experimental waves. This behaviour can be rationalised by assuming that individuals seek lump-sum payments and struggle to hold savings. Structural estimation of this model accounts for the behaviour of 75% of participants. Of these, two-thirds have high demand for lump-sum accumulation but savings difficulties. These results imply that the distinction between microlending and microsaving is largely illusory

    Forecasting banknotes

A central bank’s liquidity forecast is important in ensuring that it supplies the banking system’s need for central bank money. Banknote (or currency in circulation) demand is the largest and for some central banks the most variable component of the liquidity forecast. Accurate forecasting of banknotes is essential in ensuring an accurate liquidity forecast and in turn effective monetary policy implementation. This Handbook discusses these issues and outlines a structural time series state space (STSSS) model which is now used by central banks including the Bank of England and ECB to forecast banknotes (currency in circulation).Forecasting banknotes
