Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

    Variations on the Author

“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis

Cereal Crops Commercialization Decisions of Smallholder Farmers: A Case Study of Horro District, Western Ethiopia

This study aimed at identifying and analysing factors affectingcommercialization decisions of smallholder farmers on major cereal crops inHorro District, Oromia, Ethiopia. A multi-stage sampling approach wasemployed to choose the district, kebele and sample households. A total of 144farm households were considered in this study. Focus group discussions, keyinformant interviews and field observations were held to generate qualitativedata. This was supplemented by secondary data collected from differentpublished and unpublished sources. Descriptive statistics and logit modelwere used to identify determinants of commercialization decisions ofsmallholder farmers and effects of explanatory variables on their decision. The results of the study indicated that 16 per cent of the sampled farmhouseholds were in commercialized category, whereas the majority (84%)fell in non-commercialized category. Access to credit service, storagemethods, extension access, oxen resource endowment, farming equipmentendowments and total harvest were important in affecting commercializationdecisions of smallholder farmers, focusing on wheat, barley, maize and teff.To accelerate agricultural commercialization in the area, there is need toencourage market infrastructure, credit services, extension service, andimproved crops storage facilitie

Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more sophisticated methods

Determinants of Potable Water Consumption in Rural Areas of Machakel District, Amhara Region, Ethiopia

The study examined the determinants of potable water consumption in rural areas of Machakel district. Consumption of potable water with adequate quantity is a basic requirement for human wellbeing. Potable water consumption in terms of per capita consumption and influencing factors are not well studied in remote rural areas. The study used a cross sectional survey design. Structured interviews of 293 sample respondents were conducted, who were selected using probability sampling technique. This was supplemented by key informant interviews. Descriptive statistics and multiple linear regressions were used to analyse potable water consumption and identify socio economic, demographic and water use determinants of potable water consumption in the study areas. The result show that most of the household heads used protected hand dug wells, protected springs and protected shallow wells. The average per capita water consumption was to be 14.06 litters per day from protected water sources. Household size, education, types of water sources and waiting time at the water sources had been significantly affecting per capita potable water consumption per day in the study area. Thus, local level decision makers should consider these variables in the process of potable water supply

Political and Economic Exclusion-Induced Conflict and Displacement: Evidences from Metekel Zone, Benishangul Gumuz National Regional State (BGNRS)

This study examined factors that drive exclusion-induced conflict and displacement in the Metekel zone. Data was collected from a sample of 435 respondents, i.e., 359 households’ surveys, 60 focus group discussants, and 16 key informant interviews. Evidence suggested that exclusion has been deep, and the scale of conflict, violence, and displacement was pervasive. Ethnicity was the main factor in excluding households from exercising rights to access resources. Light skin color (“qey” in Amharic) also served as a marker of otherness (non-indigenous). During times of conflict, the so-called qey were indiscriminately attacked. A case in point was what happened to the Shinasha, whose light skin color had a more devastating effect than their ethnicity. Legal frameworks, administrative and executive institutions were fused with ethnicity as facilitators of exclusion and inclusion. BGNRS’s constitution defined some ethnic groups as “indigenous” and the remaining as “others” or “non-indigenous”. During exclusion-induced conflict incidents of 2018 to 2021, households from Amhara, Agew, Oromo, and Shinasha were targeted based on their ethnicity and skin color, resulting in discrimination, restricted access to services and rights of mobility. The study concluded that political exclusion engendered by ethnic federalism has induced conflicts with devastating effects on economic, social, and political dimensions causing large-scale displacements, violent attacks, loss of lives and community divisions. In reconciliation engagements, displaced households were not made part of the peace-making process. The study recommends revisiting controversial articles of BGNRS’s Constitution that define some ethnic groups as indigenous (owner nationalities) giving them exclusive rights over others

    koamabayili/VECTRON-author-checklist: VECTRON author checklist

We have done our best to complete the author checklist relating to the use of animals in the hut study. Note that the objective for the hut study was to evaluate the IRS treatment applications for residual efficacy against Anopheles mosquitoes, including the local An. coluzzii mosquito population. Cows were only used to attract mosquitoes into the huts and no tests were carried out directly on the cows. The author checklist is intended for use with studies where experiments are carried out on animals, which is why we have had such difficulty in completing this for the hut study, as many of the questions do not relate to how the cows were used
