L’univers nonsensique de Fouad Laroui
Through colorful characters who populate the unique and nonsensical universe imagined by Fouad Laroui in his collection of short stories Les Noces fabuleuses du Polonais, the author puts forward one of the key functions of humor which plays as a warning against conformity to conventions. With various incredible situations, misunderstandings, high-spirited interactions, laughter bursts out thanks to a cleverly distilled humor illuminating stories that are sometimes, after all, very ordinary. Our purpose is to analyze the levels of humor in the collection, in order to try to understand how this state of mind and this type of situations which make us laugh, under its multiple facets of irony, derision, comical, laughable and absurd, become the parade against an incoherent world.
Fluorescent recovery after photobleaching (FRAP) of a fluorescent transferrin internalized in the late transferrin endocytic compartment of living A431 cells: Theory
AbstractIn previous works, other authors characterized a compartment (LCT) of A431 carcinoma cells in which markers of transferrin endocytose had accumulated during a long chase period. This compartment, was essentially formed by large stationary vacuoles. A few small vesicles budded from these vacuoles, rapidly saltated along microtubules and eventually fused with other vacuoles, causing an intracellular transport of the marker bound to the limiting membrane (M. De Brabander, R. Nuygens, H. Geerts, C.R. Hopkins, Cell. Mot. Cytoskel. 9 (1988) 30). In the present paper, we derived the fluorescence recovery after photobleaching (FRAP) of a fluorescent marker of LCT. We assumed that the rate of the intracellular transport of the marker was controlled by the fission–fusion process between vesicles and vacuoles. We showed that the concentration of a bleached fluorescent marker was a decreasing exponential function of the time elapsed from the beginning of the recovery phase. The rate constant of this exponential was equal to the product of the vesicle surface by the number of vesicles which fused with a unit of vacuole surface during one second. If a fraction of the marker spontaneously reactivated itself with a much higher rate constant of reaction than the rate constant of the transport process, the fractional FRAP of the marker was the sum of the fractional FRAP of both processes occurring separately. In a companion paper (F. Azizi, P. Wahl, Biochim. Biophys. Acta 1327 (1997) 75–88), our FRAP experiments will be described and analysed with the mathematical expressions derived in the present paper

Fluorescence recovery after photobleaching (FRAP) of a fluorescent transferrin internalized in the late transferrin endocytic compartment of living A431 cells: Experiments
AbstractIn this work, we verified that transferrin fluorescently labelled with lissamine rhodamine sulfochloride (Tf-LRSC) is internalized in epidermoid A431 carcinoma cells through the specific endocytic pathway of transferrin. The FRAP of this fluorescent marker internalized in the late compartment of transferrin endocytosis (LCT) was measured in living A431 cells. These experiments showed the presence of an active intracellular transport of Tf-LRSC which can be interpreted by a mechanism involving carrier vesicles budding from stationary vacuoles, saltating along microtubules and fusing with other stationary vacuoles, according to previous video-microscopy observations of a membranous traffic dynamics in these cells, revealed by a gold complex of an Anti-Transferrin Receptor (ATR) (M. De Brabander, R. Nuygens, H. Geerst, C.R. Hopkins, Cell. Motil. Cystoskel. 9 (1988) 30). When the A431 cells were treated with nocodazole or metabolic inhibitors, there remained a residual FRAP which was ascribed to the spontaneous reactivation of the bleached molecules. According to a theoretical result obtained in the companion paper (P. Wahl, F. Azizi, Biochim. Biophys. Acta 1327 (1997) 69–74), we derived the fractional FRAP characterizing the transport process of Tf-LRSC by subtracting the fractional FRAP of the nocodazole-treated cells from the fractional FRAP of the non-treated cells. This FRAP of transport was fitted to a formula derived in that companion paper and based on the mechanism outlined above. From the time constant value determined by this fit, the number of vesicles which fused with a unit of vacuole surface was calculated to be 0.15 μm−2 s−1. The rate value of the fusion of vesicles with vacuoles was divided by two in cells treated by AlF4−, and increased to 20% in cells treated with Brefeldin A. These results correspond to an homotypic fusion process regulated by an heterotrimeric G-protein. Our work suggests that FRAP can be used to bring information on the transport of membrane components in living eukaryotic cells

The Lebanese French speaking poetry reached maturity in the fifties and the sixties. Deeply influenced by surrealism, the modern generation of authors is yet represented by a poet whose art and views go against the surrealist sensibility of his contemporaries. Fouad Gabriel Naffah (1925-1983) was a poet in all means, but never got the recognition he hoped for. On the fringes of the Lebanese society as well as of the literary context, yet, he seizes the real and integrates the Lebanese landscape into a speculative creative process allowing poetic living . The creation of an intellectual poetic language raises description to the rank of cosmogony. Representing space as highly structured and paradoxical brings out new relationships between the subject and the world that are governed by the principle of immanence. Therefore, Naffah s work can be read, oddly enough, as an original approach of lyricism, and poetic creation, brought into actualization or explained by the author, can be understood as a spontaneous phenomenology. Nevertheless, obstacles to such an ambitious conception of poetry rise mostly in itself, so much so that Naffah s poems are, at the same time, a demonstration of fullness and a scene of collapse.PARIS13-BU Droit-Lettres (930792101) / SudocSudocFranceF
Modelling droplet breakage in continuous emulsification using static mixers in the framework of entire spectrum of turbulent energy
Droplets breakage during continuous emulsification in static mixers is investigated in this work. It is clearly shown that for viscous continuous phases, droplet breakage occurs mostly in the dissipation range of isotropic turbulence. To consider this, a modified breakage kernel of Coulaloglou and Tavlarides based on the full turbulence spectrum of Pope is employed within a population balance model to describe the time evolution of the droplet size distribution during the emulsification process. This full-spectrum-based model is tested against a wide range of experimental data and showed to be predictive and accurate. The full-spectrum-based model requires the knowledge of the mean turbulent kinetic energy and the mean energy dissipation rate that are obtained from computational fluid dynamic simulations (CFD). To allow a rapid implementation of the model without time-consuming CFD simulations, a model reduction is proposed based on mean energy dissipation rate estimation through pressure drop measurements only. The new model gives comparable predictive capabilities as that based on CFD simulations with improved computational efficiency
Structural study using 29 Si and 27 Al Solid State MAS NMR and compressive strength analysis of metakaolin-based geopolymer paste
Geopolymers are hardened aluminosilicate gel that develop strength via the crosslinking of tetrahedral silicate and aluminate. Past Research has highlighted a wide range of mechanical properties of geopolymer synthesised from various aluminosilicate materials. This research focuses on studying the effect of variation in the percentages of metakaolin, sodium silicate and sodium hydroxide at a fixed water to solids ratio on the development of geopolymer structure and compressive strength. Kaolin was thermally treated and XRD and FTIR traced the changes in crystalline Kaolin and its transformation into a more disordered structure of metakaolin. Characterisation techniques were used for the study of geopolymer produced. FTIR analysis illustrated the changes in the characteristic bands of metakaolin after being activated with sodium silicate and sodium hydroxide to form geopolymer. The 27Al and 29Si Solid State MAS NMR spectra confirmed the formation of polymerised tetrahedral silicate interconnected to tetrahedral aluminate in the form of Q4(4Al) and Q4(3Al) which are responsible for the attained compressive strength of geopolymer. The produced geopolymers exhibited high early compressive strength and high 28-day compressive strength in the range of 30–81 MPa. This promotes the use of geopolymers as a replacement to Ordinary Portland cement especially in targeted construction applications. This study is part of Ph.D of author Heba Fouad and the PhD was a fellowship granted by Yousef Jameel Foundation. Also, Heba Fouad also would like to show her gratitude to Dr. Abdel Hamid Emwas and Dr. Mariusz Jaremko for conducting Solid State MAS NMR samples in KAUST Core lab
