No full textThe author describes the work of PIRATTES, a project jointly directed by the Co-operative of Salt Producers in Guande (France), the Scientific And Technological Centre (Benin), and the French Volunteer Association (AFVP). The project, linking communities involved in salt-production in the North and the South, introduced new processes to Benin to avoid the major ecological and workers' health problems caused by traditional processes. Two years into the project, and it has expanded. The results obtained are encouraging, though marred slightly by the continued use of artificial materials.This article is hosted by our co-publisher Taylor & Francis.</p
Traces and shards of self-injury: Strange accounting with “Author X”
No full textIn this strange account autoethnography, three or four authors explore their lived experiences with self-injury. Strange accounting is both a post-modern style of text, and a method for keeping identities concealed when risks and secrets are in play. Author X, a post-modern place-keeper for an anonymous author who may or may not have contributed to this manuscript, introduces a new dimension and layer of concealment. With Author X in-play and under erasure, the reader will never be sure if there were three or four authors on this manuscript. Through strange accounting, a post-structuralist/postmodernist frame will be applied to understanding the self-injury experience. We frame self-injury as a social practice and, for some, an everyday norm, while remaining acutely aware of the stigma surrounding the topic of self-injury. Each of us, coupled with Author X, provide the others cover to trace stories of self-injury through the literature, our flesh, and our lives
Wave Energy in Brittany (France)—Resource Assessment and WEC Performances
No full textRefined numerical wave energy resource assessments are required to reduce uncertainties in the evaluation of available power and energy production. However, to restrict the computational cost, a great part of wave hindcast simulations cover a limited time range (below ten years) or rely on coarse spatial resolutions while routinely ignoring tide-induced modulations in wave conditions. Complementing resource assessments conducted in the North-West European shelf seas, we here exploited a 27-year hindcast database (1994–2020) set up at a spatial resolution of 200 m along the coast of France and integrating the effects of tidal currents on waves. This evaluation was conducted in three water depths from offshore to nearshore (60, 40 and 20 m) around Brittany, one of the most energetic regions along the coast of France. We investigated the performances of a series of thirteen state-of-the-art wave energy converters with respect to installation depth range. Beyond confirming the interest of western Brittany in energy exploitation, the results exhibited the first ranking between devices, thus promoting the interests of Oceantec in offshore waters (60 m), Wave Dragon in intermediate waters (40 m), and Oyster and WaveStar C6 in shallow waters (20 m)

Author self-citation in the general medicine literature.
No full textAuthor self-citation contributes to the overall citation count of an article and the impact factor of the journal in which it appears. Little is known, however, about the extent of self-citation in the general clinical medicine literature. The objective of this study was to determine the extent and temporal pattern of author self-citation and the article characteristics associated with author self-citation.We performed a retrospective cohort study of articles published in three high impact general medical journals (JAMA, Lancet, and New England Journal of Medicine) between October 1, 1999 and March 31, 2000. We retrieved the number and percentage of author self-citations received by the article since publication, as of June 2008, from the Scopus citation database. Several article characteristics were extracted by two blinded, independent reviewers for each article in the cohort and analyzed in multivariable linear regression analyses. Since publication, author self-citations accounted for 6.5% (95% confidence interval 6.3-6.7%) of all citations received by the 328 articles in our sample. Self-citation peaked in 2002, declining annually thereafter. Studies with more authors, in cardiovascular medicine or infectious disease, and with smaller sample size were associated with more author self-citations and higher percentage of author self-citation (all p≤0.01).Approximately 1 in 15 citations of articles in high-profile general medicine journals are author self-citations. Self-citation peaks within about 2 years of publication and disproportionately affects impact factor. Studies most vulnerable to this effect are those with more authors, small sample size, and in cardiovascular medicine or infectious disease
