Grammatical errors in Saudi students' writing : a minimalist approach / Mohammad Abdul Aziz Omar Al-Khatib

    No full text
This empirical study is an analysis of EFL writing by third year university students. There are three aims of the current work; (1) to find out the kinds of grammatical errors Saudi students make in their writings; (2) to explicate ungrammaticality of the students' errors employing the Minimalist Program; (3) to evaluate the contributing factors that cause grammatical errors. Data was derived from compositions written by a stratified random sample of twenty junior students majoring in English at The Faculty of Arts and Humanities in King Abdul Aziz University, Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. Actually, these compositions are an assignment given by their lecturer as a kind of critical writing about the play Trifles by Glaspell. The study is qualitative in nature as it primarily focuses on analyzing the types of grammatical errors no matter how frequent they occur. Findings revealed that most of the grammatical errors are in sentence structure, prepositions, subjectverb agreement and wrong use of words. The results demonstrated that Saudi juniors do not completely fulfill the requirement for lexical information of an English sentence in the sense they still do not fully understand how many arguments a verb must have, what features a verb may have in terms of transitivity, intransitivity or even what kind of phrase that a verb subcategorizes for. With regard to factors causing ungrammaticality, intralanguage errors were the majority of the grammatical errors in the writings whereas mother-tongue interference has no great influence on the students' writing. Saudi EFL students seem to over-generalize English rules to other positions in sentence structure. Also, they are not aware, sometimes, of the exceptions or restrictions of a rule which results in ill-formed structure. Findings of the study and its pedagogical implications are discussed in detail in chapter five

Nothing but the truth: the Sufi testament of 'Aziz Nasafi

    No full text
`Aziz Nasafi is among the most important Islamic mystics of the medieval period. His achievement was to integrate various ideas, including those of Ibn `Arabi and Najm al-Din Kubrä into a coherent whole, providing Persian speaking Sufis with an introduction to the speculative and practical dimensions of Sufism. This thesis is an attempt to present Nasafi's main teachings. After introducing his life, times and works, the second chapter focuses upon ontology. This is the spine of Nasafi's treatises and it is based upon the Sufi interpretation of God's incomparability and similarity (tanzih wa tashbih) and His infinite self-disclosure which occurs within a form processed by the imagination. The second chapter investigates the different forms of knowledge available to Sufis, which includes sense perception, reason and mystical knowledge. Nasafi's presentation depicts all three in a hierarchical structure with Sufi knowledge at the pinnacle. Having discussed the theoretical nature of Sufism, chapter four deals with the practical element of Sufism and how it is able to contribute to felicity in this life. Having followed the Sufi path, it is possible that a wayfarer may experience unity with God. This is examined in chapter five, and Nasafi's description is compared with that of other Sufis in an attempt to show his "orthodox" position within Sufism. It is also argued that modern models of mystical experience do not fit Nasafi's depiction of tashbih-tanzih, and that one also needs to re-think the idea of perennial philosophy. Finally, the perfection of man is considered through examining the relationship between Prophecy and Friendship of God. Sufis interpreted Friendship as the interior element of Prophecy and were able to offer new insights to Islamic doctrine

This volume is a collection of essays in honour of Professor Mohammad Ardeshir. It examines topics which, in one way or another, are connected to the various aspects of his multidisciplinary research interests. Based on this criterion, the book is divided into three general categories. The first category includes papers on non-classical logics, including intuitionistic logic, constructive logic, basic logic, and substructural logic. The second category is made up of papers discussing issues in the contemporary philosophy of mathematics and logic. The third category contains papers on Avicenna’s logic and philosophy.Mohammad Ardeshir is a full professor of mathematical logic at the Department of Mathematical Sciences, Sharif University of Technology, Tehran, Iran, where he has taught generations of students for around a quarter century. Mohammad Ardeshir is known in the first place for his prominent works in basic logic and constructive mathematics. His areas of interest are however much broader and include topics in intuitionistic philosophy of mathematics and Arabic philosophy of logic and mathematics. In addition to numerous research articles in leading international journals, Ardeshir is the author of a highly praised Persian textbook in mathematical logic. Partly through his writings and translations, the school of mathematical intuitionism was introduced to the Iranian academic community

    No full text
AbstractThe aims of this study were to develop and validate a group guidance module for student self-development based on Gestalt theory. This module comprized nine sessions and 12 activities that were developed along the concepts, principles, and techniq ues of Gestalt theory which were espoused by Fritz Perls, Laura Perls, and Paul Goodman in the 1940s and 1950s. The design method used in this study involved a descriptive approach involving expert judgment. The instruments used were two questionnaires: the first was to determine the content validity of the module as advocated by and the second was to determine the suitability of the sessions and activities of the module as recommended by Mohammad Aziz Shah (2010). The sample of the study comprized six experts consisting of psychologists, counselors, and academicians. A statistical software was used to analyze the decriptive statistics of the collected data which revealed promising results. The values computed for the content validity as suggetsed by Rusell were high, ranging from 71.6% to 81.6%. Likewise, the values for the suitability of the sessions and activities of the module as advocated by Mohammad Aziz Shah were high, ranging from 71.6% to 83.3%. These findings reinforce the adoption of Gestalt precepts and group guidance approach in the design of modules for student self- development. Implications of the findings are also discussed in the paper

Records may be used to ensure transparency, to keep individuals and organizations responsible for their acts and responsibilities, and to show that organizations have met legal or regulatory standards or accepted best practices. Organizations use documents to comply with legal, regulatory, and financial standards, as well as to safeguard their properties and rights. They help to promote a democratic society's standards of accountability and secure the rights of people. They allow governments to provide people with electronically accessible services and encourage citizen engagement through information provision and digital interaction. Record surely can be identified in most organizations but the practices of record management maybe only some of the organization is familiar with it. Hence, records ought to be overseen as a vital asset to encourage the daily function and operation of the organization. Records appear as a medium to improve the effectiveness and efficiency of the organization, it becomes a strategic resource that provides for future use. This study aims at describing how public records are managed and used among officers in departments and ministries of the Malaysian government. The respondents and key informants engaged in this study are Diplomatic Administer Officer (PTD) from different position grades starting from grade M44 to JUSA because they are categorized as top management that acts as administer, policymaker, decision-maker, etc. in the organization. The respondents were randomly selected from twelve ministries and one department of the Malaysian public sector in Putrajaya. The study conducted is quantitative method. The data collection was conducted through three phases. The first phase involves the task of communicating with the sample ministries and departments selected for this research. The second phase involves the online data collection in form of Google Forms via WhatsApp application and electronic mail. The third phase involves follow-up action with the ministries and departments that have not respond to the questionnaires. Questionnaires containing four sections were used to collect and analyze the data. A total of 271 questionnaires were collected and only 266 were analyzed using SPSS and Smart-PLS software. Findings show that all hypotheses are accepted. Records users as found to have a significant and positive relationship with strategic use of records. Records value was also found to have a significant and positive relationship with strategic use of records same as the relationship between records user and records value. Moreover, records value is hypothesized as a mediator between records user and strategic use of records also indicate the same result. The results of the study have contributed to the development of research model and theory in using records as a strategic resource especially, in the government sector. Government servants especially PTD officers must use records as one of the strategic resources in carrying out their daily affairs. Systematic record management needs to be further strengthened to ensure that the preserved memory of corporate enemies contributes to the development of a developed and rapid nation
