International audienceIn this paper, the author aims to study, first of all, some French fragments of Iulia Hasdeu’s poetic creation, by means of underlining, in particular, the different comparison techniques that will appear in them and that result as well from a specific literary context. Those fragments will be an occasion to come back to some aspects of the personality of Iulia Hasdeu that will be linked to Bogdan Petriceicu Hasdeu, her father (who has widely contributed to the spread of Romanian literature and culture) and to her visibility at European level. Then, the author will present Ondine Valmore, another poetess, French, who was born at the same century, in order to point some possible similarities in their style and the themes they use. Once again, the analysis of some fragments of her work will require the highlighting of some outstanding aspects of the authors’ life, by referring to the persons close to her. The objective will be to contribute to testify to the importance of both of those poetesses on the socio-cultural scene at that time as well as their topicality.
Supermoms and bumbling dads: How do Mother's Day and Father's Day cards help perpetuate traditional roles in the home?
The chapter, "Supermoms and bumbling dads: How do Mother's Day and Father's Day cards help perpetuate traditional roles in the home?" was written by the listed authors including Alison M. Thomas (Douglas College Faculty). Life in Canada is marked, celebrated, enjoyed, and dreaded in ways that respond specifically to the seasons. Sociological thinking allows people to ask questions about things that may otherwise be taken for granted. Thinking about the seasons sociologically opens up a unique perspective for studying and understanding social life. Each chapter in this collection approaches the seasons and the passage of time as a way to explore issues of sociological interest. The authors use seasonality as a device that can bridge, in fascinating ways, small-scale interpersonal interactions and large formal institutional structures. These contemporary, Canadian case studies are wide-ranging and include analyses of pumpkin spice lattes, policing in schools, law and colonialism, summer cottages, seasonal affective disorder, New Year’s resolutions, Vaisakhi celebrations, and more. Seasonal Sociology offers provocative new ways of thinking about the nature of our collective lives. --From publisher description.book chapterPublished
Jacques Tati
Diplomsko delo povezuje raziskovalni in praktični del.
V prvem, teoretičnem delu zato predstavlja Tatija in njegov umetniški opus in s tem zariše polje, znotraj katerega se giblje njen način ustvarjanja.
Nadaljuje s predstavitvijo procesa priprav, snemanja in post-produkcije filma. This bachelor thesis connects research with practice and seeks out the intersections between the creative opus of director Jacques Tatischeff – Tati and the short feature film Ondine, written and directed by the author of this paper Taja Košir Popovič. The thesis is dedicated to the amazement of the subtleness of the great artist Tati’s expression. His sense for observing people and stepping into their psyche and character has inspired the author of this paper to dedicate herself to researching the levers that direct our behaviour, reactions and interactions, whilst designing her approach to exploring the various possibilities of crafting the personalities of the main characters of her feature film Ondine. She was also charmed by Tati’s ability to immerse the viewer into comical, sometimes absurd scenes, which he nimbly weaves into new and unusual situations that both surprise and entertain the viewer. The author has recognized the author’s timeless aesthetic, as relevant in his own age, as it is nowadays, as yet another bridge to the perception of time and space in her own work, and her understanding of beauty.
In the first, theoretical part of the thesis, Tati and his creative opus are introduced. Thereby the living space of the author’s own form of expression is drawn. The life path of Tati as director and actor is summarized, and a selection of his films is presented. Afterwards, the thesis takes a deeper look into his feature film Playtime, and focuses on the key building blocks that the authors managed to assemble into an unrepeatable form of artistic expression.
The second, practical part, presents the author’s artistic background – how and why she approached making Ondine, explains what inspired her and at which points she found the answers to her own creative challenges in Tati’s work. It continues with the presentation of the processes of preparation, filming and postproduction of Ondine
Michel Legrand's music in Jacques Demy's "Les Parapluies de Cherbourg" (1964) : an analysis of the dialogue between music and dramaturgy
Les Parapluies de Cherbourg (Jacques Demy, 1964) is one of the few films to be entirely sung, as in an opera. Scored by Michel Legrand - using the languages of scholarly music as well as those of jazz and improvised music - this singular cinematic artifact interweaves twenty-seven themes and melodic-harmonic frameworks that are associated with characters, groups of characters or situations. The aim of this thesis is to study, for the first time, the entire score of Les Parapluies de Cherbourg, in order to fully understand its dramaturgical implications. The author relies in particular on the paradigmatic analysis method theorized by Nicolas Ruwet : starting with the first utterance of a theme or motif - instrumental or sung - she superimposes all subsequent occurrences chronologically on the score, observing variations and proposing an interpretation in relation to the dramaturgical events. Various methods of analysis adapted to both art music and jazz are also employed, not forgetting a careful examination of the textual content. Over the course of the four main chapters that complete this thesis, each of which is devoted to a character or a couple/group of characters, the author attempts to explore as exhaustively as possible the relationship between music, script and staging
Back to the future: A journey of becoming a professional practice consultant
This chapter follows one teacher’s journey from pre-service teacher, to primary teacher, through to mentor and Professional Practice Consultant (PPC). The author journeys through an analysis of self, and analysis of her identity as an educator, showing how aspects of each of the roles experienced and explored have contributed to her current identity. Throughout the chapter, poetry is used to provide an insight into the various encounters that occur in the Professional Experience space. The poetry marks significant milestones in the 12-month process of being a PPC and assists to uncover the nuances and tensions associated with being in the PPC role
The black surrogate mother., 2011
This study examines the literary depiction of the black surrogate mother as she is created according to the authors race, gender, background, experience, biases and goals. Even though she is one of the most successful and popular characters of fiction, she is also controversial. Her reputation is iconic as well as dichotomous. For example, she is credited for the exemplary upbringing of her white charges, while simultaneously blamed for neglecting her own children. Particularly, this paper looks at three black surrogate mothers who conform to the prototypical, often stereotypical, image of the black surrogate mother: Mammy, Aunt Mammy Jane, and Dilsey. The critique substantiates that Mitchell and Faulkner, respectively, were invested in depicting Mammy and Dilsey as representatives of the real black surrogate mothers of their lives. Although, the character of Mammy Jane mirrors Mammy and Dilsey in her commitment and devotion to her white family, Chesnutt employs her as a cautionary warning to the blacks who refuse to accept change and progress after Emancipation. The other three black surrogate mothers, Sofia, Berenice, and Ondine, are antithetical to the stereotypical black surrogate mother. Sofia, an accidental maid, is representative of Walkers intense efforts to deconstruct the image of the black surrogate mother that plagued her throughout her lifetime. Unlike most white authors, McCullers crafts Berenice as independent, strong, and autonomous, not just as a black surrogate mother of a white child. Morrison provides Ondine with a husband and daughter to be concerned with so that she cannot be cast as the stereotypically loving, nurturing black mother of white children. The conclusion of this study validates that the literary black surrogate mother is most often a creation based upon her authors specific and personal biases and goals. In conjunction with the above assertion, the critique also contends that the real life black domestic has been and will continue to be significantly influenced by her fictional representative
Dream Maker and Heart Breaker - Engendering Epic in Kings and Queens
Arnaud Desplechin’s 2004 Kings and Queen tells the story of two former lovers, Nora and Ismael, as they remember their past and start new lives. Alternating between a first-person confessional perspective and a more impersonal style, the story line combines tragedy and comedy. The two perspectives meet, intertwine, and collide with one another much as the relationship between Nora and Ismael evolves through time. While ostensibly about ordinary people facing everyday joys and disappointments, the film begins with an arpeggio played on a harp and a voiceover describing how Zeus loved the beautiful Leda and came to her as a swan, an opening gesture that places the narrative firmly in the realm of epic. Like Yeats, author of the famous poem “Leda and the Swan,” Desplechin sees myth as a source of inspiration and self-understanding. Critics have noted the important place given to modern poetry and psychoanalysis in Desplechin’s film, but it is Greek myth that is at the core of and provides a key to understanding Kings and Queen. In the following pages, I trace the visual and poetic motifs that link Kings and Queen to Greek myth in general, and more particularly to the Odyssey, and show how Desplechin uses the classical tradition to engender —to use Yeats\u27 word—a modern epic of homecoming that transforms and transcends its ancient models
"The Madame Murat’s fairy tales that make up this collection are influenced by various literary traditions whose imprint is visible in the motifs and subjects treated, but also in the anthroponyms chosen by the author. The aim of this study is to investigate these influences by analyzing the names of characters from literary sources. Thus, Constantine / Constantin, Richardin, Fortuné, Lucidan or Isotte belong to the folkloric world of Straparola’s Le piacevoli notti. Pactole or Philomela are indebted to Greek mythology. Princess Ondine and the people of the Ondins are linked to Nordic mythology and to the Cabala, whose main representative from the onomastic point of view is Gabalis. Finally, the Matter of Britain is evoked in the names of Merlin and Merline."
