Mutation Breeding in Chickpea: Perspectives and Prospects for Food Security
The book by M. Imran Kozgar aims to cover the problems of mutation breeding in pulse crops in the light of issues related to food insecurity and malnutrition, which according to FAO are the major threats at the present time. So far the research on induction of mutation in pulse crops is negligible compared to cereal crops, though the pulse crops and especially the chickpea are the largest grown crops in India. The main objective of the book is to reveal and explore the possibility of inducing genetic variability in early generations of mutated chickpea, describe the positive aspects of mutagenic treatments, evaluate the content of mineral elements (iron, manganese, zinc and copper) and physiological parameters of isolated high yielding mutant lines. The author hopes that his book will help to advance studies on pulse crops, and that in the long term it will help to reduce the food insecurity and malnutrition problems presently persisting in various developing countries, including India
Cooperative negawatt P2P energy trading for low-voltage distribution networks
In this paper, the formation and feasibility of negawatt (nW) peer-to-peer (P2P) energy trading in a grid-connected energy network are studied. In particular, a framework is presented to introduce nW P2P trading concept in the local electricity market in order to provide cost savings to each participating prosumer. To capture the decision-making strategy of various nW prosumers, a coalition game model is proposed whereby prosumers can trade energy frequently in a collaborative way. The proposed nW P2P trading framework satisfies the beneficial criterion of the coalition game. Also, it confirms the stability and prosumer-focused feature of the structured coalition. To distribute the total coalition payoff between nW prosumers, Shapley value and Nucleolus are used. Finally, simulation results are provided to examine the effectiveness of the developed nW P2P trading on an actual distribution network. The simulation results emphasise that the proposed nW P2P trading can (1) enable prosumers to minimise notable portion of their electricity costs compared to the grid's-facilitated demand response scheme, (2) keep total power loss and voltage profiles within permissible ranges, and (3) avoid network protection arrangements required for voltage regulation as opposed to kilowatt P2P trading.Full Tex
Investigating the impact of P2P trading on power losses in grid-connected networks with prosumers
The extensive financial benefit that a prosumer can reap from participating in P2P trading has been shown to be unprecedented by many recent studies. However, since the actual transfer of electricity occurs over the physical network, a key question that yet to answer is: what is the repercussion of P2P trading on the power losses in grid-connected electricity networks? To this end, this paper presents a detailed physical layer analysis of P2P trading to investigate its impact on the network losses. In this paper, P2P transaction losses is defined as one part of network losses and a strategy is proposed to trace P2P transaction losses using effective nodes’ area concept. The other portion of network losses is labelled as grid contributed losses incurred due to the power supplied by the grid to satisfy other customers within and outside effective nodes’ area. Finally, this paper utilises IEEE 8500-node distribution test feeder to capture the large-scale performance of P2P trading in comparison with the existing case, in which there is no P2P trading. Several case studies are considered and the first category of simulation results demonstrate that the P2P transactions do not change the network losses, compared to the non-P2P scenario, if prosumers do not have power dispatch flexibility. Further, It is observed from the second category of simulation results that flexible power dispatch of P2P prosumers can change the network losses at some time instants of a typical day. However, the variation in 24 h network losses between P2P and non-P2P cases is found to be insignificant for a large-sized distribution network with notable residential customers for a typical sunny day

Coalition graph game-based P2P energy trading with local voltage management
In this paper, the feasibility of peer-to-peer (P2P) energy trading in a voltage-constrained grid-connected network is studied. In particular, a local voltage management scheme is proposed that takes network constraints into consideration to instruct the prosumers to trade energy frequently in the P2P market. A coalition graph game-based P2P energy trading framework is developed, in which prosumers can form the coalition to negotiate and decide on the energy trading parameters, such as trading quantities and prices. The Myerson value rule is used to allocate the total payoff of the proposed game fairly among the participating prosumers. Further, the stability of the proposed coalition structure is confirmed. Several simulation results are provided to verify the effectiveness of the developed P2P trading model. The simulation results show that the proposed P2P trading framework can enable prosumers to export power without causing high voltage problem in the network, and help prosumers cut down a significant portion of their overall electricity costs compared to the feed-in-tariff and coalition game model without mutual negotiations.Full Tex
Proposal for a New Economic Framework Based On Islamic Principles
This book provides a holistic socio-economic framework working in conformity with the Islamic principles. Chapter 2 builds the ground for the proposed framework by discussing the foundations of the ethical precepts of Islam. It discusses the thesis of religion, answers some of the questions in the comparative study of religion and tries to resolve few of the misconceptions about the faith of Islam. Chapter 3 outlines the economic teachings of Islam with regard to earning and spending. It discusses at length the ideals Islam set before its adherents in the ethical sphere of life. The ethical principles are discussed based on the study of relevant Quranic text and the narrations of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH). Chapter 4 studies the comparative economic systems. It analyzes Capitalism, Socialism, Mixed Economy and Islamic economic system. Chapter 5 introduces the salient features of the proposed economic framework with special focus on fiscal reforms. It discusses the potential of the institution of Zakat to meet fiscal needs of the government and to assist it in doing away with deficit financing, fiscal bleeding, crowding out private sector and reducing deadweight loss by parting the way with private sector so as to ensure market economy operating on its own as far as possible and playing an active regulatory role. Chapter 6 introduces the monetary reforms. It discusses how savings would feature despite discontinuation of interest, how inflation will be checked with central banks not having at their disposal conventional OMO, how liquidity will be managed in banking sector when a central bank wants to inject liquidity or mop up funds. How and to what extent the institution of Zakat would enable the government to meet its fiscal targets and does not crowd out private sector with public borrowing. How balance of payments and exchange rate stability can be managed in an interest free economy. If in the short term, the government or central bank needs alternative source of revenue other than Zakat, they can issue GDP linked bonds. This could replace T-bill and provide a base instrument for OMO and liquidity management in the banking and financial sector. Chapter 7 introduces the currently practiced Islamic Banking and Finance. Since Islamic economic principles have more prominently been used in banking and finance, much of the discussion centers on Islamic banking and finance in lieu of analyzing the existing practices and then in the next chapter, preferable alternatives in areas where shortcoming is observed and need for improvement is felt are suggested. Chapter 8 discusses the financial system in the proposed framework with the role of institutions and the discussion on comprehensive need fulfillment mechanisms to serve every major need of a sophisticated contemporary financial system. Some important novel changes are recommended, such as introduction of options in mortgage financing, which will allow the bank to separate the tenancy and sale contract in a distinctive way. This will still ensure that it locks the sale with the borrower or with the third party without making both contracts dependent on each other. It will benefit the bank as well as the borrower, who will have an option but not an obligation to buy the asset at maturity. The modified role of bank entering in a Mudarabah contract as a “Rabb-ul-maal” (investor) will ensure that the bank takes on operational risk. It will enable the resources to go into productive avenues rather than in financial instruments. This modification will generate employment and productive activities in the economy in a more direct manner. The division of Mudarabah corporate and Mudarabah consumer will target two very distinct markets and will result in channeling of funds from saving surplus units to saving-deficient units. Reforms in equity markets and alternatives for insurance are also suggested. Chapter 9 introduces feasibility and structure of Micro credit as an alternative for interest based micro finance. It discusses how the potential obstacles in the form of lack of trust, funding commitment, lack of collateral arrangement, lack of documentation etc would be handled.Interest Free Economy, Islamic Economy, Islamic Economic System, Islamic Monetary Policy, Islamic Fiscal Policy, Interest, Zakat, Riba, Usury, Development, Redistribution, Economic Systems, Financial System, Financial Intermediation, Saving, Investment.
Exact solutions for n-layer concentric flow of PTT fluids through a cylindrical pipe
Flows of multiple layers of fluids are encountered in many industrial and manufacturing processes. This paper investigates the concentric n-layer flow for PTT fluids through a cylindrical pipe. Finitely many immiscible non-Newtonian fluids are considered to be flowing concentrically in a tube. The flow is modelled using the exponential PTT fluid model and exact solutions for velocity fields and volume flow rates are computed. \textcolor{red}{It has been shown that the corresponding results for linear PTT fluid model as well as Newtonian fluids can be deduced from the obtained expressions, and that they match with present literature. It has also been observed that for such layered flow, the non-Newtonian parameters significantly affect the flow of fluids in adjacent layers. The effects of involved parameters on the velocity profiles are also shown graphically. We also show that a unique velocity maximum exists along the axis of the pipe. Moreover, it is also observed with the help of an example that layer thickness can be adjusted in order to obtain maximal flow rate with a given pressure gradient. The accepted manuscript in pdf format is listed with the files at the bottom of this page.
