LANGUAGE SHIFTING CONTEXT ON STATUS RELATIONSHIP

    Get PDF
The mental process in the mind plays an important role on how people usedlanguage. This issue was raised in this study as this study tries to reveal theexistence of the contextual changing when people are in different status.Descriptive analytical method was used in this study while the technique to collect the data was document technique. The data were taken from some documents of written conversations of five subjects around 20 years-old. The data was in form of locutions in WA conversations that were recorded within the subjects and their friends, and the subjects and special-friends. This study revealed that in the opening conversation, when viewed in terms of language, there have been differences in the choice of the type of function of the relationship between the subjects and their special friends and ordinary friends. In a relationship with special-friends, the words uttered tend to use words that have a form of expressive speech which has the function of expressive and pathic. On the other hand, the status of ordinary friends has function of representative and directive. In this case, it is proven that the mental process in the mind which is the different thoughts or feelings towards the recipients influenced the choice on what type of utterances will be delivered. Keywords: functional type, language shifting, sociolinguistics, statusrelationship

AbstractThis study contrasted verb features that exist in Indonesian and English imperative sentences. The contrastive analysis is used to make the second language or foreign language learners understand more easily on the target language being learnt. In this case, the study tried to contrast Indonesian language as L1 and English as L2. The data that were used in this study were taken from two sources; Indonesian and English Grammar. The grammar was sorted specifically only on imperative sentences that were collected through attentive observation method and is continued by notetaking technique. Hence, some imperative sentences that were collected were then be analyzed by comparing language units with determining tools in form of comparative relationship between all determining elements that are relevant with all the determined language units. The result revealed that there were some similarities and differences in the verb features of Indonesian and English imperative sentences. Both Indonesian and English mostly use base verb to form imperative sentences, in some cases, they also use suffixes. Also, they attach marker words to form negative and to soften the imperative sentence. On the contrary, some contrasts were found in the existence of passive form, the use of suffixes, the distribution of some markers, the use of auxiliary verbs, and the existence of inversion form. Keywords: Contrastive Study, English, Imperative sentences, Indonesian, Verb Feature

ACTIVE LANGUAGE EXPOSURE IN PHONOLOGICAL ACQUISITION

This study observed the phonological acquisition of two children from the same family background in Yogyakarta who had different exposure in language. The observation was conducted from the children’s birth day to the second year of their age.  The first child (A) has an active language exposure while the second child (B) has a normal language exposure. The language exposure was given by the family toward their children where in this case, the child A family exposed language through language exposure, introducing objects, language control, and bed time story while child B family gave no language exposure but in natural way. The phonological production development of both A and B were recorded through audio, video, and script. The recording showed that in cooing period, their phonological productions have no significant difference. The difference detected in bubbling period where child A produced greater numbers of phonemes in his bubbling. The greater increase of phonological production continued in child A where he has acquired all Indonesian phonemes but [r] in his second year of age. In addition, child A has produced language in phonemic structures earlier than that of child B. At their age of two, child A has produced complex word utterance while child B was still in one word utterance. These evidences indicate that active language exposure is necessary for children phonological acquisition. Key words: acquisition, phonology, active language exposur

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    Get PDF
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

    Variations on the Author

“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis

THE USE OF INFLECTION AND DERIVATION IN COVID-19 ARTICLES OF THE JAKARTA POST NEWSPAPER

English is rich with derivational and inflectional morphemes which can be seen in its articles. The goal of this study was to find out and to identify the use of derivational and inflectional morphemes in The Jakarta Post newspaper. Therefore, a descriptive qualitative method was applied in this study. In collecting the data, document and note-taking method were used. The data were selected from articles in The Jakarta Post newspaper which concerned with Covid-19 issues and were released between October 26 and 28, 2020, the year where the Covid-19 had just spread out in Indonesia, and around August 25 to 26, 2021 where the world had invented the vaccine. This study discovered that the articles had derivational morphemes formed in several prefixes; un-, en-, dis-, some suffixes; -er, -or, -ly, -y, -ion, -ment, -al, -ship, -ize, -ance, -ness, -ee, -ist, -ent, -ity, -ive, the combination of prefix and suffix; em- and -ment, un- and -able, mis- and -ion, un- and -ate, double suffixes; -or and -y, -ive and -ity, and double prefixes; un- and -dis-. It was also revealed that there were some inflectional morphemes found. They were affixes -s and -es for plural forms, -ing for progressive form, -ed for past tense form, -en for past participle, -‘s for possessive form, -est for superlative form, and -s for third person singular form. However, the affix -er for comparative form was not found in selected articles in The Jakarta Post newspaper. The findings also showed that a single free morpheme can have one to three bound morphemes in it. Inflectional morphemes can be attached to a derivational morpheme and more than one derivational morpheme can be joined to a single free morpheme. However, it did not happen in the case of inflectional morphemes, as there is no free morpheme attached by multiple inflectional morphemes

Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

    Get PDF
We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more sophisticated methods
