Democratic Welfare State as Visualised by the Quaid-i-Azam

No full text
The Quaid-i-Azam, Muhammad Ali Jinnah, is known more for his political achievements than for his socio-economic thought. Last two decades, however, have seen a continuous flow of books containing his speeches, statements, messages, interviews, discussions in pre-independence legislative bodies and addresses in the Constituent Assembly of Pakistan. Even a cursory look at this vast literature shows that he was not only concerned with the political aspect of sub-continent’s independence movement but also consistently expressed his views regarding the socio-economic uplift of masses in general and Muslim society in particular. These views in their bare essentials reflect a remarkable continuity of approach from the earlier days of his political career to the period he occupied the position of Governor General of Pakistan. Actually, he became more and more expressive and forthright as the prospects of Pakistan coming into existence became bright. When Pakistan finally appeared as a sovereign nation on the map of the world, he openly rejected the prevailing economic system as having failed to do justice between man and man and to eradicate friction from the international field.

Buckypaper of polyvinyl chloride/p -phenylenediamine modified graphite and PVC/graphite via resin infiltration technique

No full text
Resin-infiltration technique has been employed as a versatile method to improve nanofiller dispersion in matrix. In this article, fabrication of polyvinyl chloride (PVC)/p-phenylenediamine (PPD)/functional graphite (F-G) and PVC/F-G composite paper have been reported through resin-infiltration techniques. Synthesis and characterization of PVC/PPD/F-G and PVC/F-G composite papers for enhanced structural, morphological, thermal, hardness, wettability, and conductivity properties have been studied. Moreover, the effect of increasing amount of F-G and PPD/F-G nanofiller on composite paper properties was scrutinized and compared. Transmission electron microscopy and scanning electron microscopy depicted better graphite nanofiller dispersion in PVC matrix and network formation in PVC/PPD/F-G composite paper. Maximum degradation temperature (T-max) of PVC/PPD/F-G 0.08 composite paper (517 degrees C) was found higher than PVC/F-G 0.08 composite paper (484 degrees C). Dynamic contact angle analysis shows that the PVC/PPD/F-G and PVC/F-G composite papers have better surface wettability than neat PVC. PVC/PDD/F-G 0.1 and PVC/F-G 0.1 composite papers possess high microhardness values up to 39.67 and 32.76Hv, respectively. Electrical conductivity of 8.97 x 10(-3) and 5.89 x 10(-3) Sm-1 was observed for 0.08 wt% PPD/F-G and F-G loaded samples. POLYM. COMPOS., 39:4176-4187, 2018. Rent-sharing, hold-up, and manufacturing wages in Cote d'Ivoire

No full text
Labor costs in Francophone Africa are considered high by the standards of low-income countries, at least in the formal sector. Are they a brake on industrialization, or the result of successful enterprise development? Are they imposed on firms by powerful unions, or government regulations, or a by-product of good firm performance? The authors empirically analyze what determines manufacturing wages in Cote d'Ivoire, using an unbalanced panel of individual wages that allows them to control for observable firm-specific effects. They test the rent-sharing, and hold-up theories of wage determination, as well as some aspects of efficiency-wage theories. Their results lean in favor of both rent-sharing, and hold-up, suggesting that workers have some bargaining power, and that in Cote d'Ivoire workers can force renegotiation of labor contracts, in response to new investments.Economic Theory&Research,Public Health Promotion,Health Monitoring&Evaluation,Labor Policies,Environmental Economics&Policies,Economic Theory&Research,Environmental Economics&Policies,Health Monitoring&Evaluation,Health Economics&Finance,Statistical&Mathematical Sciences

Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

No full text
We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more sophisticated methods

Effects of dietary inclusion of vitamin C on immune and antioxidant defence system in captive reared juvenile mahseer, Tor putitora (Hamilton, 1822)

No full text
The present trial was conducted to evaluate the effects of dietary L-ascorbyl-2-polyphosphate (vitamin C) on immune and antioxidant defence system in captive-reared juvenile mahseer (Tor putitora (Hamilton, 1822)). The experiment consisted of four treatments (3 replicates each), which received four semi-purified diets containing 0, 100, 200 and 300 mg.kg-1 of vitamin C. A total of 120 fish with an average initial body weight, 2.27 ± 0.01 g were distributed among 12 tanks (10 fish per tank). At the end of the 70-day experiment, all fish of each group were subjected to hypoxia stress for 48 h. Fish fed 300 mg.kg-1 vitamin C showed significantly increased (P < 0.05) serum lysozyme activity in response to hypoxia stress, followed by 200 and 100 mg.kg-1 vitamin C. Similar results were observed for glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px), glutathione reductase (GSR) and superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity. After hypoxia, malondialdehyde (MDA) concentration was considerably reduced (P < 0.05) in fish fed 300 mg.kg-1 vitamin C. These results indicated that in stressful conditions feeding diets supplemented with 300 mg.kg-1 vitamin C would be better than 200 and 100 mg.kg-1 vitamin C, to obtain the optimum immune and antioxidant status of captive-reared juvenile mahseer.Quaid-i-Azam UniversityDepartment of Animal Sciences Faculty of Biological Sciences Quaid-i-Azam UniversityAquaculture Center São Paulo State University (UNESP), Via de Acesso Prof. Paulo Donato Castellane s/nAquaculture Center São Paulo State University (UNESP), Via de Acesso Prof. Paulo Donato Castellane s/

Stochastic system identification via filtering techniques

No full text
simultaneous tracking of the state and identification of hidden parameters for structural systems are usually pursued by recursive Bayesian inference schemes. Provided that the state space equations are linear and the distribution of uncertainties is Gaussian, the Kalman filter furnishes the optimal solution to the recursive Bayesian estimation problem. In practice, only few real problems can be assumed to evolve linearly; moreover, the probability density functions are seldom Gaussian. In this work, we compare the performances of sigma-point Kalman filtering and particle filtering for linear and highly nonlinear structural systems, so as to assess their stability and robustness in stochastic system identification
