    Reliable Estimates of Merchantable Timber Volume from Terrestrial Laser Scanning

    Simple and accurate determination of merchantable tree height is needed for accurate estimations of merchantable volume. Conventional field methods of forest inventory can lead to biased estimates of tree height and diameter, especially in complex forest structures. Terrestrial laser scanner (TLS) data can be used to determine merchantable height and diameter at different heights with high accuracy and detail. This study focuses on the use of the random sampling consensus method (RANSAC) for generating the length and diameter of logs to estimate merchantable volume at the tree level using Huber’s formula. For this study, we used two plots; plot A contained deciduous trees and plot B consisted of conifers. Our results demonstrated that the TLS-based outputs for stem modelling using the RANSAC method performed very well with low bias (0.02 for deciduous and 0.01 for conifers) and a high degree of accuracy (97.73% for deciduous and 96.14% for conifers). We also found a high correlation between the proposed method and log length (−0.814 for plot A and −0.698 for plot B), which is an important finding because this information can be used to determine the optimum log properties required for analyzing stem curvature changes at different heights. Furthermore, the results of this study provide insight into the applicability and ergonomics during data collection from forest inventories solely from terrestrial laser scanning, thus reducing the need for field reference data

    Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed.     “Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

    Tree Species Classification and Health Status Assessment for a Mixed Broadleaf-Conifer Forest with UAS Multispectral Imaging

    Automatic discrimination of tree species and identification of physiological stress imposed on forest trees by biotic factors from unmanned aerial systems (UAS) offers substantial advantages in forest management practices. In this study, we aimed to develop a novel workflow for facilitating tree species classification and the detection of healthy, unhealthy, and dead trees caused by bark beetle infestation using ultra-high resolution 5-band UAS bi-temporal aerial imagery in the Czech Republic. The study is divided into two steps. We initially classified the tree type, either as broadleaf or conifer, and we then classified trees according to the tree type and health status, and subgroups were created to further classify trees (detailed classification). Photogrammetric processed datasets achieved by the use of structure-from-motion (SfM) imaging technique, where resulting digital terrain models (DTMs), digital surface models (DSMs), and orthophotos with a resolution of 0.05 m were utilized as input for canopy spectral analysis, as well as texture analysis (TA). For the spectral analysis, nine vegetation indices (VIs) were applied to evaluate the amount of vegetation cover change of canopy surface between the two seasons, spring and summer of 2019. Moreover, 13 TA variables, including Mean, Variance, Entropy, Contrast, Heterogeneity, Homogeneity, Angular Second Moment, Correlation, Gray-level Difference Vector (GLDV) Angular Second Moment, GLDV Entropy, GLDV Mean, GLDV Contrast, and Inverse Difference, were estimated for the extraction of canopy surface texture. Further, we used the support vector machine (SVM) algorithm to conduct a detailed classification of tree species and health status. Our results highlighted the efficiency of the proposed method for tree species classification with an overall accuracy (OA) of 81.18% (Kappa: 0.70) and health status assessment with an OA of 84.71% (Kappa: 0.66). While SVM proved to be a good classifier, the results also showed that a combination of VI and TA layers increased the OA by 4.24%, providing a new dimension of information derived from UAS platforms. These methods could be used to quickly evaluate large areas that have been impacted by biological disturbance agents for mapping and detection, tree inventory, and evaluating habitat conditions at relatively low costs

    Accuracy Assessment of Total Stem Volume Using Close-Range Sensing: Advances in Precision Forestry

    Accurate collection of dendrometric information is essential for improving decision confidence and supporting potential advances in forest management planning (FMP). Total stem volume is an important forest inventory parameter that requires high accuracy. Terrestrial laser scanning (TLS) has emerged as one of the most promising tools for automatically measuring total stem height and diameter at breast height (DBH) with very high detail. This study compares the accuracy of different methods for extracting the total stem height and DBH to estimate total stem volume from TLS data. Our results show that estimates of stem volume using the random sample consensus (RANSAC) and convex hull and HTSP methods are more accurate (bias = 0.004 for RANSAC and bias = 0.009 for convex hull and HTSP) than those using the circle fitting method (bias = 0.046). Furthermore, the RANSAC method had the best performance with the lowest bias and the highest percentage of accuracy (78.89%). The results of this study provide insight into the performance and accuracy of the tested methods for tree-level stem volume estimation, and allow for the further development of improved methods for point-cloud-based data collection with the goal of supporting potential advances in precision forestry

    Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

    We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature.     Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

    We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more sophisticated methods

    We have done our best to complete the author checklist relating to the use of animals in the hut study. Note that the objective for the hut study was to evaluate the IRS treatment applications for residual efficacy against Anopheles mosquitoes, including the local An. coluzzii mosquito population. Cows were only used to attract mosquitoes into the huts and no tests were carried out directly on the cows. The author checklist is intended for use with studies where experiments are carried out on animals, which is why we have had such difficulty in completing this for the hut study, as many of the questions do not relate to how the cows were used
