Equivariant geometric K-homology for compact Lie group actions
25 pages. v2: some mistakes corrected, more detail added, Michael Walter as author added. To appear in Abhandlungen aus dem Mathematischen Seminar der Universität HamburgLet G be a compact Lie-group, X a compact G-CW-complex. We define equivariant geometric K-homology groups K^G_*(X), using an obvious equivariant version of the (M,E,f)-picture of Baum-Douglas for K-homology. We define explicit natural transformations to and from equivariant K-homology defined via KK-theory (the "official" equivariant K-homology groups) and show that these are isomorphism
The concept of freedom in the work "life and time of Michael K" by J.M. Coetzee

The next thesis is born of the need to go deeper and deeper into the field of contemporary literature, specifically the Nobel author of literature John Maxwell Coetzee. Author of South African origin who has made himself known through his various controversial issues such as apartheid, war, slavery, among others. In this work I specifically deal with the author's fourth book, "Life and Times of Michael K", thus revealing his work. In this way, the corpus of the following work is then divided into four chapters, organized as follows:
The first one, titled "LIFE AND TIME OF MICHAEL K", is a chapter written type literary essay, where the work "Life and time of Michael K" is announced. His story is then discussed, his reading step by step, the themes that the author presents, a short summary of the novel. Questions are developed such as, What are the main themes of the author in this novel? What is the perspective of the author ?, What is the most significant that is found when reading ?, What historical events gave rise to the novel? , What do we know about Michael K as a historical character or fictional character ?, and finally in this chapter then mentions why this novel should be read today, its contribution to the contemporary world and the particular style of JM Coetzee.

The second chapter, entitled "THE PATH OF J.M. COETZEE ", then treats the author in the course of his life, bearing in mind that he is one of the Nobel authors of literature still alive. It is then a general trajectory for the author's great work, his life, his first novels, as they come to his life, specifically as it comes to his life "Life and time of Michael K", looks at J.M. Coetzee as a novelist, as a narrator, as an essayist, as a thinker and as a literature teacher. This chapter deals with questions such as: What are in general terms the most relevant and frequent themes in the works of Coetzee ?, the human condition in the finest essence, slavery, abuse of power, solidarity, injustice, Old age, man trapped in the system, war, among others. This chapter takes reference to the author's three autobiographical novels, "Childhood (1998)", "Youth (2002)" and "Summer (2010)".
In the third part, the title "THE DOOR OF THE CARCEL IS OPENED" is discussed in this chapter, the theme of freedom in the different works of Coetzee, "Waiting for the Barbarians", "Iron Age", Lands of West”, " Journal of a bad year ", among others. It has as reference then the subject of freedom of "Life and time of Michael K". In addition, he confronts the ideas of Coetzee and those of other authors, freedom in John Dewey, Jean - Paul Sartre, Bertrand Russell, Martha Nussbaum, Edward Said.
Finally, the fourth chapter, entitled "RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN LITERATURE, EDUCATION AND THE SEARCH FOR FREEDOM", is a chapter written in a literary essay about the role of reading, Coetzee's novels and the search for a freer society, More thoughtful, less dominated by hegemonies. With the example of "Life and time of

Michael K", that is Michael K as a symbol of freedom. In this chapter, questions such as, Can the characters of J.M. Coetzee symbol of a quest for freedom? Are Michael K, David Lurie, the judge of "Waiting for barbarians" symbols of freedom?
It can then be concluded that the literature of J.M. Coetzee has many issues to be analyzed, they are tempting, captivating and also controversial; Is the kind of literature that should not be overlooked

An Analysis of the Prose Style of John Steinbeck
Efforts to establish a base for making valid generalizations about prose style must begin -with the printed page. Me freely assign descriptive adjectives to the writing of any author of whom we are knowledgeable, but such subjectivity only compounds our ignorance. Every analysis of prose style must attempt to objectively answer the question, "How did the author achieve this style?" | In our time we witness increasing manifestations of a scientific approach to our every act. Each year the possibility of avoiding this Scientific Age recedes further. This situation enables—perhaps tempts is a better term—us to apply scientific principles, if not the machinery, to problems inherent in the study of literature. Whether we use computers or pencils, this temptation to delve into the methods of writers comes largely from the environment we all share. The question now has become, "Precisely what statistics can we produce to substantiate our statements about a writer’s style?”ProQuest Traditional Publishing Optio
Early Risk, Attention, and Brain Activation in Adolescents Born Preterm
The relations among early cumulative medical risk, cumulative environmental risk, attentional control, and brain activation were assessed in 15 – 16-year-old adolescents who were born preterm. Functional magnetic resonance imaging found frontal, temporal, and parietal cortex activation during an attention task with greater activation of the left superior-temporal and left supramarginal gyri associated with better performance. Individual differences in early cumulative risk are related to patterns of brain activation such that medical risk is related to left parietal cortex activation and environmental risk is related to temporal lobe activation. The findings suggest that early risk is related to less mature patterns of brain activation, including reduced efficiency of processing and responding to stimuli. This is the accepted version of the following article: Carmody, D. J.M. Coetzee's occluded intertextuality : reading text, intertext and the archive in Life & Times of Michael K and Foe
This thesis is a study of occluded intertextuality in two novels by South African author J.M. Coetzee, Life & Times of Michael K (1983) and Foe (1986). It examines Coetzee’s novels in concert with intertexts and archival materials to determine how Coetzee employed intertextuality as a means of negotiating his positionality as a white liberal author in late-apartheid South Africa. In Chapter 1 I examine Coetzee’s initial intention, exhibited in a working notebook and early drafts, to rewrite Heinrich Von Kleist’s 1811 novella Michael Kohlhaas, demonstrating how, although Coetzee ultimately moved away from this intertext, its traces remain in Michael K through an inescapable lacuna which creates an experience of hesitation for character, author, and reader. In Chapter 2, I trace Coetzee’s attempts to rewrite Daniel Defoe’s 1724 courtesan narrative, Roxana, although Foe’s typically identified intertext is Robinson Crusoe. A contrapuntal reading of Roxana reveals that imperialism, motherhood, prostitution, and authorship form a knot in that text, which is transferred to Coetzee’s novel via the return of Susan Barton’s lost daughter in the novel’s final section. Chapter 2 thus seeks to supplement readings of Foe that posit Friday as the novel’s ultimate representation of ethical engagement with alterity. This thesis establishes a relationship of comparative exchange between several kinds of intertext and in doing so aims to construct a personal ethics of reading. Derek Attridge describes the ethics of reading as an encounter, through literature, with the other, or an other. For Attridge, “Coetzee’s works both stage, and are, irruptions of otherness into our familiar worlds” (xii) precisely because reading his work is an event. This thesis seeks to expand Attridge’s conceptualization of reading Coetzee’s work as an event beyond the borders of individual texts to consider the ethical force that results from reading text, intertext and foretext concurrently and interactively.Arts, Faculty ofEnglish, Department ofGraduat
